1. Geogaddi 2. Music Has the Right to Children 3. The Campfire Headphase 4. Tomorrow's Harvest I still considered #4 their "new" album when finally checking it out last year, only to realise it's been ten years... lol. Haven't listened to it a lot (yet). But I like it well enough. Geogaddi and Music Has the Right are hardest to place, but I have to give Geo the inch. + My favourite release might be In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country. It's the only one I actually own as well. That reminds me I should try playing it at 33 rpm again.. alternate versions unlocked ;)

via bocpages: "Mike says: ‘Farewell Fire’ Marcus is on keyboards, nothing more. He did it in a night session. There are moments where it stutters and it really feels like someone no longer able to play well out of sadness. That is why you should never program music. Even if it is an electronic piece, it sounds very human, heartbreaking."

"Farewell Fire" is the sound of the last moments of a wonderful experience you had when you were young - everything felt right. You know you'll never experience it again, this exact feeling will never be felt by you after this, and you know on a subtle level that this experience will echo for the rest of your life, causing pangs of nostalgia and longing. It's too good of an experience to NOT have that effect.

Amazing work as always! Campfire is a very special record to me, and as the summer comes to an end, I find myself playing it more frequently; trying to enjoy the warmth of the fire as the summer sun sets.

Boards Of Canada is one of those artists that basically shifted my thinking...like i don't really know how to properly articulate how much I love their albums and overall aesthetic. I've just "felt" thier music so intensely and profoundly at times that its hard to describe how much their music means to me. I can't exactly pick a favorite album of theirs since they're all special in different ways...but The Campfire Headphase certainly contains a few of my favorite BoC tracks of all time (Slow This Bird Down, Dayvan Cowboy, Peacock Tail)

Boards Of Canada, if you're looking at comments, just wanted to let you know how much I love you guys. you did so much for me. I grew up with alot of violence and trauma, and your music makes sence to me. I can remember my sad childhood and be ok with it, be nostalgic about it, and let it go. life is so sad and painful sometimes, but it's also beautiful and inspiring. I can feel both of these things when I listen to your music. I really hope you will release more music, the art you create helps alot of people. thank you.

This is like choosing a favourite child 😉 In a way, I grew up with BoC. I encountered them during the twilight of high school. Geogaddi dropped when I was in college. Campfire dropped right after finishing college and trying to get through this thing called life. Tomorrow’s Harvest … well, that’s deep into the complicated darkness of adulthood. I likened Campfire to Children (and by extension Tomorrow’s Harvest to Geogaddi) in that they both tap into that feeling of wide-eyed wonder with little to no adult cynicism. In a sense, it’s like making Children again knowing that Geogaddi exists. But instead of retreading in the same way, it’s taking a different approach. It’s like returning to a hiking trail or a park after so many years. Additionally, you decide to take a different approach or visit different areas. It’s bittersweet nostalgia seen from a different angle. It’s interesting that BoC could be seen aa the direct ancestors of vaporwave. Their nostalgia for the 1970s would influence a generation to consider their own childhood memories and make their own nostalgic sounds, even infusing it at times with a kind of bittersweet melancholia. At any rate … cheers and keep the campfire going.

Interesting how BoC's music seems to so perfectly soundtrack the natural progression of our lives. Indeed the tone of Children and Campfire are similar: Here's another quote from BoC speaking about Campfire that I couldn't fit into the video: "It's deliberately reminiscent of ‘Music Has the Right to Children'. Musically it's like an echo of that record, all bleached-out blue skies and so on. In some ways it sounds older than ‘Music Has the Right…' because of the choice of instruments and the sheer amount of damage we've done to the sound." - Marcus Eoin, Losing Today, 2005/11

Excellent video my friend! I have loved The Campfire Headphase from the moment I bought it on the day of release back in 2005. I've never understood why it has some detractors. It's a beautiful and melancholy album that I have a deep, emotional connection with. I still listen to it regularly.

I came to Boards quite late, around 2013 or 2014. I was listening to music that was featured in Adult Swim bumps and that’s how I first heard Hey Saturday Sun. That’s become my favorite song by BoC and it eventually lead to listen to this album and anything else I could find in their discography. For being the black sheep of the family, it’s a hell of a good one.

Awesome insights on this album. Thanks for sharing this with the world. The Acronym for The Campfire Headphase is THC. Anyone think this was done on purpose or coincidental? Love to hear people’s thoughts. Hoping for new music from BoC one day. 🙏🏻

Was stoked to see you dropped another vid. I love your coverage. You choose really interesting albums and have great taste! Boards of Canada fans are the best. I bartended for years and one night after a long shift in the early 2000s I got out to my car to find a note attached under one of my windshield wipers. I guess some dudes were smoking a joint outside my car and spotted my “Music Has The Right to Children” CD. The note said something like “Sorry, honestly we weren’t scoping out your car. Just noticed the BOC disc on your seat, and wanted to say hey. Besides my own friends, I don’t usually bump into a lot of other fans.” Not like they were super big back then, so the dude just thought he would leave a note as a little high five. He left his email address and I sent him a quick note. When he received my email, it jogged his memory from what was apparently a fuzzy night before that ha ha. I ended up inviting him to come into the bar on a Sunday night when it was slower. We chatted about music all night and he even burned me a couple of disc worth of B-sides and rarities and we had a few drinks. BoC fans are so chill and music unites us all. I loved Campfire Headphase. Years later, still bartending, I would be driving home and crank Dayvan Cowboy over and over again. I sat parked in front of my house with it on repeat before finally going inside. It’s a great way to see the sun come up. It’s magically melodious and has such a great peak. Their use of strings on this track is brilliant.. I loved the anticipation of those huge cymbal crashes kicking in three quarters into the song. Keep making great content dude. Look forward to your next drop!

Everything Boards have ever done ranks at the absolute pinnacle of musical experience for me, and I have always cherised "The Campfire Headphase" in a manner that is distinct from their other records...it has always been the soundtrack to precisely the kinds of experiences, recollections and narratives you have so lucidly articulated in this video. What a phenomenal job you've done of contextualizing this oft misunderstood record amongst the rest of their catalog and making the case for it be best appreciated on its own merits (unlike in relation to what else they've put out, as so many critics so foolishly were inclined to do upon its release). My parents and father-in-law have all passed away over the course of these last 4 years, so your analysis of/and insights into the song "Farewell Fire" especially struck a resonant/poignant chord with me. Thank you so much for this, I think this is easily your best (IMHO) yet.

Echoing what others have said, this is absolutely my favorite BoC record. While there are tracks on the other 3 records I don’t connect with fully, for me this record just keeps on giving. Perhaps my favorite track is the 1 minute 42 seconds Constants Are Changing. It’s like a snippet of a larger song that floats by before it fades into the distance, just long enough to make you wish you could hear the full track. It’s sets up the final forth act of the record by creating a sense of longing for resolution. It gives me chills every time I hear it.

@@AlbumAffairs It's true, there's nothing more psychadelic than burning crackly sounds and guitars. Certainly my generation who BOC are part of lived through a high level of drug taking, and warp were synonomous with rave music. Have you checked out 'Hell Interface'?

Loved this from not long after it was released, but it's only "underrated" because it's the least good of their first three albums ;) P.S. good video essay, man. And of course there's more to it than what I wrote at first. P.P.S. I'm guessing you're Swedish? Norwegian here.

Have always loved and appreciated The Campfire Headphase. It is BoC's most community-focused and introspective album; a highly distinctive record, amongst other highly distinctive records, from an already distinctive band. In its own right, it slots perfectly into the discography. Where MHTRTC feels very much like the carefree and curious childhood years, Geogaddi being a tumultuous and turbulent adolescence, The Campfire Headphase evokes the newfound freedom and exploratory phase of our early adulthood. A time when we could get out of our familial shelter and step out into the world still with a blissful ignorance of the vicissitudes of life. A pure, unadulterated outlook with a plethora of opportunity before us upon which we can now act. Yet, for just a single Summer, we can put that aside and simply relish in our existence of the present moment amongst the company friends and nature, reflecting upon our community and ourselves whilst staring deeply into that smoky campfire, embers lucent in the air and fading out just as quickly as if signalling the transformative changes of adulthood, the comings-and-goings of experiencing life ~ 🏞
