Significant fragments of works from my troubled years at college.
Piano Quartet
00:00 - introduction (for string trio)
01:32 - in moto perpetuo
A bit of an unfinished piano quartet. Not much to say other than that I think the metric modulation formal ploy of the second part and general rhythmic language are cool. I also think the string parts around 02:23 are really nice.
05:09 - Microludes for 2 Percussionists
Not much to say about these. The first one is kind of a stupid product of the not-all-that-soundproof percussion room... but I think the second one is pretty, and the third one is cool.
Hopkins Songs
06:02 - I (untitled "Repeat that, repeat, ...")
07:29 - II (Spring and Fall)
Settings of two poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins for 11 voices (SSMMAATTRBB) and 2 percussionists. There was going to be a third movement on the text "Heaven - Haven," but not much of that exists. Abandoned because of the unworkably difficult polyphony, and since I wasn't all that happy with my treatment of the texts.
Texts:
Repeat that, repeat,
Cuckoo, bird, and open ear wells, heart-springs, delightfully sweet,
With a ballad, with a ballad, a rebound
Off trundled timber and scoops of the hillside ground, hollow hollow hollow ground:
The whole landscape flushes on a sudden at a sound.
Spring and Fall (to a young child):
Márgarét, áre you gríeving
Over Goldengrove unleaving?
Leáves like the things of man, you
With your fresh thoughts care for, can you?
Ah! ás the heart grows older
It will come to such sights colder
By and by, nor spare a sigh
Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie;
And yet you wíll weep and know why.
Now no matter, child, the name:
Sórrow’s spríngs áre the same.
Nor mouth had, no nor mind, expressed
What heart heard of, ghost guessed:
It ís the blight man was born for,
It is Margaret you mourn for.
