Hey Tino. A recent subscriber and I love your channel dude! I'm a South African living in Vietnam since 2015. The reason I left was a home robbery at 4am with guns. You are right that the crime we experience in South Africa is normalised. We don't realise how the rest of the world looks at us. These statistics are just numbers that fly over our heads but every single one of them is a son or a daughter, someone's parent, aunt or uncle maybe even. It's a lot of sorrow and misery that many people experience - and this is all one years stats - that will affect the rest of their lives.

Thank you glad you enjoying the content! It's so sad that the larger the numbers get, the more people get desensitized. I've always imagined how our news feed would look like if the murders in SA were reported like how US media reports killings in the US. Just last weekend, 13 people were shot dead in a gang related shooting spree in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town. I can't imagine what those communities are going through.

@K9JT

I would say that corruption is the biggest crime in SA. It happens at every level of society, irrespective of geography, race, class, age. It's so entrenched in all areas of our life that social norms are built around the acceptance that it is a normal thing in society. Yet the disastrous impact it has on our country cannot be quantified in a tangible way, so it's such a difficult problem to tackle. The solutions seem simple, and everyone agrees that it's a problem and must be sorted out, and no one dares encourage it but the enthusiasm to eradicate it feels severely lacking as well as the intelligent leadership that it needs to drive implementation of those solutions. It's also what enables the proliferation of all the other crimes because there is little or no consequences for committing crime or even when getting caught.
@trying2adult
3 жыл бұрын
Great insights! Too bad it's hard to get accurate numbers on just how bad corruption is cos of well, corruption. The PPE scandal from last year was just so unbelievable that our leaders would rob the country of so much money during a pandemic. They clearly only care about themselves. The one thing I admire about SA is that the democracy here still works, but I feel like people just aren't voting the right leaders in or perhaps too scared to switch things up? Sigh...

@@trying2adult Not a problem.I live in Germiston, a small City in the East Rand Region of Gauteng. The first encounter I was 19 on my way to work (by foot) for a group meeting one early morning at around 7am...I had my phone and was listening to music at the time and this random, guy decided to walk a few meters in front of me at my pace...which I immediately noticed (because I walk hella fast😂). So he noticed that I noticed him and decided to stop walking all together, as I got closer I took out my earphones and put them in my pocket, clearly feeling uneasy and ready for anything... I locked eye contact with this man as I got closer to him then...eventually passed him, BUT as I was about to reach for my Earphones I heard what sounded like someone rushing towards me...I looked and there he was with a pocket knife attempting to attacking me, I'm pretty tall so I managed to knock him down before he could swing his weapon. From there he decided to just run across the road and that was that. The second encounter happened sometime last month actually, 3 years later in the same area around the same time🙆🏽♂️...this time it was two guys. So i was taking a different route to work this time...cutting into a park, so these 2 guys decided to follow me and once I felt like I was being followed, I started walking much faster...the did so too, so I decided to run...and they did too, with knifes out as well🙆🏽♂️. Once I got to the main road they decided to run away...the craziest thing about this particular encounter is that I had earphones on and I was being chased while listening to some dubstep music😂😂😂 I've changed my routine by going much earlier (6am) and its definitely helped as less people are walking at that time.

It’s interesting that you said that most burglaries happen in the townships. I think this has to do with the disparity in the servicing (police visibility) of townships particularly in Cape Town. E.g. Delft, which has the highest rate of murder cases in the country, has about +-7 townships, but only 1 police station. Whereas in the Southern suburbs, theres a police station every 5km radius. Something to think about.
@trying2adult
3 жыл бұрын
😳 1 station in that whole area?? How can the city justify that in 2021? mxm. That place is a small city of it's own!! In my research I also found out that the police itself is so understaffed and are simply not able to deal with the backlog they already have.

Agreed. The stats are pretty crazy but I think you can safely own a car... it will depend a lot on where you live and the areas you drive in. Most robberies take place in certain hotspots and certain cars are more valued by robbers too. If you can get good insurance and a car tracking service at the very least you'll be able to replace it if something happens... will do some more research on this though sounds pretty interesting.

I can tell you having lived in Zimbabwe, stats or no stats, South Africa and Zimbabwe are poles apart in many respects and crime is perhaps the greatest difference. Zimbabwe is a peaceful and safe country. As a woman I jogged alone, walked to shops alone, hiked alone. I was never harassed or made to feel insecure. People are not murdered or burgled as they are in SA. We don't need stats alone to tell us about things like that, you know it if you are living in it. In South Africa I am always warned about being alone anywhere other than the mall and frankly it is a terrifying place to be. I cannot imagine what it is like for women living in townships when even as a relatively cocooned and privileged woman in the suburbs it was a terrifying life. I now live in the English countryside where my greatest concern and worry is my neighbour's cat pooping in my flowerbeds. Nothing could entice me to live in SA, as much as I love the beautiful landscape.

I have watched some of your videos about SA, and I liked you a lot. Your narration deep voice and the good stuff you said about my country, made me to be fond of you. I'm one of those who are protective about SA, but unfortunately I can't deny the truth about the crime levels in SA. My contribution: I think the high crime rate stems from the highest inequality in the world status that exists in our country. The gender based violence, I think, stems from the culture of absent fathers that originally stems from apartheid structural enforcement, forcing then men to abandon their families and work in the mines. That was the start, it then developed into more formats whereby children were raised by single mothers, in the process, diminishing the woman's value. Another reason on GBV, I think, is the practice of polygamy, prevalent in Southern Africa. Not that it's a bad thing, but the context under which is practised is important, whereby fast forwarding, it has developed into unfaithful relations being a norm. Not being faithful to one partner, leads to arguments and eventually GBV. Cape Town, takes the cup on crime because of entrenched gang violence expecialy in coloured areas, but now recently in black areas. Lastly, it's not all dark and gloom, crime happens in certain areas. If you are careful enough you may never experience non of the above.

@Lukengu Jean-Luc, that would really help to learn how to heal S.A. It is however a complex issue that starts with cultural perceptions ( a woman's no is a yes in disguise OR a maybe ) and the emasculation of the African man by whites and other lighter shades over decades. The result is a wounded man who takes all measures to assert his position as alpha male and the women folk being the most vulnerable followed by other men ( especially foreigners ). So your phrases like, they have taken OUR; jobs, opportunities, women etc... It will take a lot of healing.

The crime is high in SA but some of the stats are because of good record keeping. SA is known for highest crime stats because they are reliable than any other country in Africa. We also hold number one in HIV /AIDS but which country IN THE WORLD test every woman who is pregnant? If other countries in the world did the same I'm quite confident a couple of countries would topple us. The again is GBV, South Africa has one of the most independent women in the who understand and know their human rights. How many women in the world have the same privilege as South African women?? Our SA woman can report rape by their husbands, how many places in the world do the accept that? We are also one country in the world where the LGBTQI+ community is accepted in terms of the law. Yes, South Africa has its dangerous side but the focus is always on 3 provinces, have you been to Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape?? So saying South Africa instead of mentioning were a lot of crime takes place makes people everywhere in SA is dangerous which is not the case. But anyway, continue, we are here to set the record straight.
