When I was involved in community theater, one of my fellow actors told me that the art of acting is the art of RE-acting...the way that Michael reacts as Kay tells him that the miscarriage was actually an abortion...the way that Yuri Zhivago reacts as he watches from the balcony while the demonstrators are being ridden down by the Cossacks...to be always present in the scene, in character, even when you don't have any lines of dialogue. I also like directors who say, "That's good--leave it in!"

He seems like such a genuine kind person. Kinda sad to see him be sorry about 'overacting' in Scent of a Woman, that's the major criticism towards him. I personally enjoy when he adds yelling and passion into his character it's his idiosyncrasy as an Actor. Kinda like Marlon Brando being a mumbler. Scarface was so incredible on my first viewing, didn't become a Pacino fan until now. I've gone through most his filmography, and he's had such a stellar career. He's such a gem, and I'm happy he received his flowers.
@AllWordsAreDust
Жыл бұрын
I don't think Scent is a great film, but I don't think it could really have been improved if he'd given it a lower key performance. It was hammy, but suited the material. The problem is just that it ends up looking silly that THAT was his oscar win when he had at least 5 better performances just that decade. If it never came near the oscars, no one would complain about that performance.
@naimaismail4356
Жыл бұрын
@@AllWordsAreDust I agree, idg why the academy failed to award him for his portrayal of Michael Corleone or Serpico? I’m surprised because Marlon was awarded.
@AllWordsAreDust
Жыл бұрын
@@naimaismail4356 You shouldn't take oscars as a metric for quality anyway, actors RARELY actually win them for their best work. I think for GF II, he and Jack Nicholson cancelled each other out for people actually voting for the best and the guy that one got a sort of sympathy/lifetime vote. The academy likes awarding older guys because it sees young men having more chances in their future. Also, even in the 90s, the fact he wasn't even nominated for some of his best performances (Donnie Brasco especially) but was for Dick Tracy - it's hard to take seriously.
@naimaismail4356
Жыл бұрын
@@AllWordsAreDust Award shows can always be a bit political in a sense. I don't necessarily believe awards are a reflection for the quality of the art itself. And think about those that get blackballed. I always felt like the Oscars kinda overlooked Pacino, which is crazy because he's loved by everyone. Either way, he had a spectacular career and his movies will live on forever.
@AllWordsAreDust
Жыл бұрын
@@naimaismail4356 Yeah I think the way the work lives on says at least 10x more than an award. I mean, does anyone remember the guy who won over him for GFII, Art Carney? No insult to him, I've never seen his movie, might be great but Oscar or not we all know what the more important performances were that year. I actually think the vast majority of my favourite performances didn't actually win their year. I wish for Al's sake he had won in the 70s, but I don't view it as important otherwise.

Want to see this because Al Pacino has made some great movies but also because he is articulate and honest and sensitive. I loved Serpico as a kid - such a brave Christ like character in a corrupted world. Serpico maintained his innocence. Scarface shows the emptiness and deceitfulness of sin. Al Pacino is on the right side in the cosmic drama. Some other actors, say Lady Ga Ga, are working for satan.
