generalizing the entire Philippines is not fair and accurate. 105 Million in population will have their share of interests. some like basketball, some showbusiness and some Kpop to name a few. Pageants fans will not even constitute to mere 15% of population. I mean did Miss Universe 2018 even reach 15M views in you tube? and were all the views came from the philippines? claim should always be backed up by numbers otherwise it will just be concluded as anecdotal or in lay mans term: hearsay or gossip. Obsession? maybe to pageant fans and same goes to kpop fans and basketball fans, but not philippines as a whole.

its because beauty aspitants doesnt need fundings and years of training. government need not to allocate funds for training camps and venues, licensed and accredited trainers, dietician, medical team, psychologist, equipment, gears, supplements, medical insurances etc. maintaining sports arena for trainings- paying ulilities like water electricity, compliance certificates and permits, land taxes etc. and paying the salaries of those people administering and maintaining it forat least 4 years in preparation of the olympics. beauty candidates are not dependent to those, they support and finance themselves and look for sponsors if they win national title. they dont need special training places they can even practice their walk in an open ground, their make up and speech in a room with an electric fan. and the philippine government will not bother, they will just use the money to build their mansions and house their countless mistresses and send their illegitimate children to study overseas.so you know... just stating what is obvious.

Take note of the use of the word obsession indicating that something is amiss. Btw, some if not most of these recent major title holders are only half-Filipino in ethnicity bec. of Filipinos' preference for Western beauty ideals. They even have a popular cosmetic brand there called Skin White. If only the Philippines gave more focus in much pressing matters like eradicating corruption in their government, alleviating poverty, improving their educational and social services systems, minimalising brain and brawn - drain, etc., I think they'll shine truly and prosper as a nation. There'll be less news of their domestics being abused overseas. There'll be less of their doctors working as nurses or care-givers abroad. Their country won't be mistaken for a garbage dump. There'll be lesser drug addicts. Etc. Because quality of living will improve drastically if the aforesaid serious matters are addressed. Winning beauty pageants and boxing matches only bring superficial honour. Don't you want to reclaim your country's once illustrious status. Perfection is illusory and each and every country has its flaws, but improvement is not unattainable so long as the people where the sovereign power resides truly want it for themselves. You are missing my point with your narrow-mindedness and irrational sensitivity. Stop embarrassing yourselves. Grow up.

"Obsessed" yet they stop supporting? I think they're only supportive for a while when they are mentioned but not when it's over. They're not obsessed cause if they were they'd make a big deal if they lose but I haven't seen any filipino go mental or crazy because they didn't win a pageant.

Rather than saying obsession, it is Filipinos being supportive and showing what they called 'Pinoy Pride'. This is not just exclusive for beauty pageants but sports, achievements and other things too. Philippines will even feel proud for individuals who has the slightest Filipino blood running through their veins.

I think [we] should support women on what they choose to represent themselves in; whether it be on sports competitions, intellectual and scientific findings/reaserches/advancement(s), and yes, EVEN beauty pageants. Seriously, nobody forces nobody to watch annual Miss Universe pageants (giving this as an example because it is the most anticipated here in our country). I agree that there are other political, social, and economic problems that we, as citizens, and the government, need to focus on BUT that does not mean that we should shame? demonize? (can't find the right term) those who pursue and support this type of dream. This passion. That's all. :)

"OBSESSION". That particular word used in the title is very derogatory and most likely to be seen on a negative note. I highly suggest that it should be replaced with something like "Inside the Philippines LOVE for Beauty Pageants". I don't think it is obsession, we just appreciate beauty pageants during that time and support our fellow Filipino and after that we move on and continue our daily routines. I don't think I'm insecure with my beauty or being beautiful, I appreciate girls, ladies and women who are really gifted to be physically beautiful. We Filipinos, I think can easily accept our flaws, of course those who wanted to make changes or surgeries to make themselves beautiful are so free to do so if they have the monies, but we are not that obssesed with surgeries like South Korea, we do accept and embrace our diversity here.

Culture is different from obsession. In the Philippines, rather a conformity to beauty standards, it is often perceived as a celebration of beauty and diversity. When they go on stage whether for local or international pageants, it's a pride that they wear on their chest--it becomes not just about the candidate anymore, but the country she represents and the unity she gives to the nation--It now becomes beauty with a purpose.

Obsession is correct. Just as much as Filipinos are obsessed with Manny Pacquiao fights. I find it pointless. Beauty pageants only spread the idea that "this is what a true woman should look like". Lol why is there always bikini sections? Why is there rarely a room for more masculine-ish presenting women when they're very much women as well? People claim it is simply a culture and they're never insecure of the existence of beauty pageants but the existence of beauty pageants already tells that beauty standards exists-- When it shouldn't in the first place, it doesn't affect you but somewhere a kid out there is being negatively affected by such standards. The pressures to use makeup, wear dresses, have wavy long hair, etc. -- if you have a flat nose, people will bully you for it, Filipinos know this. So, how could it be harmful to young girls if we're starting to see more and more diverse candidates.
