OUSTED BY PATRICK KEITH
Patrick Keith began his work in journalism in the early 1950s with The Malay Mail and then The Straits Times where he spent 12 years covering the jungle war against the Malaysian Communist Party up to 1960.
He was also at Tunku’s request, seconded to the Ministry of Information as the deputy director of External Information Services and played a crucial role in countering anti-Malaysia news from Indonesia and President Sukarno.
He was witness to the explosive political battles within UMNO and its partners in the Alliance, namely MCA and MIC and their external partner from Singapore, the PAP in 1963-1965.
Veteran journalist Patrick Keith then helped establish Bernama, the national news service in 1968, so he had quite the stellar career in the early years that warranted the Tunku to select him for such an important role in the Ministry of Information.
What is important in this book is that the Tunku trusted him enough to grant him what could be the final interview for a biography in 1989 and also approved the book.
Patrick Keith was able to interview and ask key questions and to gain critical insight from the Tunku relating to many crucial aspects of Malaya and Malaysian history and decision making during critical years leading up to the formation of Malaysia in what is not accepted as the final authorized biography of Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Tunku Abdul Rahman passed away 6th December 1990 and the book was subsequently published in 1990 as well.
