Beno, I witnessed Inspector Sands being tested at Paddington on Tuesday 12th February 2018 including the evacuation alarm! Sadly, as I slotted my SD card into my camera, the test ended! :( Nice catch!

There seems to be a lot of guys working as Inspectors with the surname Sands for the railway. I'm changing my name by deed poll, as I'm looking for work for the railway, and I think it might help my chances of securing employment in this field.

I'm ex railway staff and current firefighter and I have to say the whole "inspector sands" thing has always baffled me. On paper, its purpose is to discreetly alert staff to a problem without alerting the public by blending in as a generic announcement. However, in practice, it doesn't do that at all because it's always accompanied by a chime or audible alarm (the beeps that play with the message) thus completely defeating the purpose. No other announcement comes with the beeps
@toranine09
Жыл бұрын
was at victoria today and there were no beeps, just the voice message. however, the illusion was broken as when they acknowledged/silenced the alarm it said "[...] to the operations room immediately... -mediately"

So much information here is incorrect. Inspector Sands can indicate a number of incidents. I'm responsible so I'm not getting into specifics as any responsible person would.Sole references to the fire detection points are incorrect. Also each station can utilize it own codes thereby adding another element of code. In most circumstances it is only the station staff who are aware of the specific meanings as they differ from station to station and deliberately so. Contrary to popular uneducated social media opinion members of the public cannot understand the exact announcement as there are multiple variations of "Inspector sands" available at each station and different protocols for different types of incidents and / or specific actions to be followed by station staff.

Inspector Sands is designed to alert staff without alerting passengers. The system has a separate alarm for evacuations. The message may indicate that a single fire alarm call point in a public area has been operated. If an automatic fire detector in a non-public area is operated, or more than one device or zone reports a fire, the system will start the evacuation procedure and the fire brigade is automatically called. The emergency in question might not be one that requires an evacuation, like a medical emergency for example. The location that Inspection Sands is sent to determines what type of emergency the staff need to deal with. "Control Room", in this case means generic emergency, and is often used when testing the system.

It originates from Theatre. They use to use a similar message, using the word "Mr. Sands", this would allow staff to deal with the emergency without causing the audience to panic.
