Dave, Definitely miss seeing you active on the boards, but every time I drive the 500SE, I remember that day I got home from a work trip to that excellent set of euro headlights and didn't let the fact that I had just finished an 8 hour drive stop me from immediately swapping them in. Hope all is well! Josh

The SEC that I purchased had this modification. It's very very cool, but yours works a little better. In fact, yours looks perfect. If I buy another SEC I likely will not tackle this because it's just too damn complicated. I know I know, you make it look easy. 👍

i do R&I (removal & installation) for hail repair guys. i drop a lot of headliners and sunroofs in newer cars, some of them are fairly complicated, such as audi A8 for example. that being said, I'm still afraid to tackle removing the headliner in my '89 560SEL. once i overcome that, I'm seriously interested in doing this conversion. once the headliner is out, the swapping the entire sunroof assembly is no big deal.

Will the 140 roof fit into the se shorter chassis 126's? I have an 81 300SD, would be a nice challenge for me if there is room for it.

That is ridiculously impressive. My sunroof suffered trauma (came up like an airbrake because there were no rails in the car) and just getting the factory roof to work right has been a nightmare. Any idea on if this conversion can be done on a W126 that doesn't have the tilt fuction (if I don't need it to tilt after the conversion either)?

Good job! - I recently accidentally broke the cast metal LHS "TRANS BRIDGE ANGLE W" bracket on my 1988 300SE tilting sunroof (part # MBA 126 780 1512) ... they now want $550 for a new one! It only cost me $128 under 4 years ago for the same part ..... I am not happy. Is this mod still using the old existing single W126 cable? Did you do the work yourself? I'd miss the front wind deflector, but thanks for putting it on KZitem!

Hello, I have 1999 w140... the sunroof slider cloth pealed off inside the roof and I need to replace it. The sunroof operates fine except for some broken plastic pieces causing the cloth to get stuck inside. Can I dis-assemble it without taking the headlines off? I am having a hard time finding the slider without the entire sunroof assembly. Any tips on where I can find one? same color as yours.

Hey there, very nice adjustment on a perfect chassis as the 126 already is! Might do the same to my 420SE in the future.... One question; the missing wind deflector, isn't that a problem when driving with the sun roof open? Obviously not mounted on the W140?....
@ElRojo126

I never really had a problem with wind noise , although I honestly rarely had the roof open at speed, as the glass did the job of letting in so much light and the A/C did what I wanted with the temperature.

Looks great. Van you tell me, does the W140 installation include all the runners and tilt mechanism? ie does the W140 sunroof installation include all the mechanical gear?
@ElRojo126
10 жыл бұрын
Yes, all the gear is included. The transom is actually a 126 part. The arms that attach to the glass are different, there are rubber "bellows" on each side, and the sunshade "slider" is different as well. If you replace the whole capsule, the air dam would also be included. That entails dropping the headliner though.
@ElRojo126

Actually, It's not all that challenging to do. The biggest issue is the removal of the front air dam and the installation of the rubber seal, which are both kinda PITA-level issues. Regarding the color, the only choices are black/dark grey or this bronzy tint. I think it looks great with the Smoke Silver paint. And yes, it's completely waterproof (though we haven't had all that much rain in Southern California).

Very impressive. Im wanting to do the same to my w126 because the tilt arms have broken. In order to do what you have done, what parts of the w126 have you reused & and parts did you replace with the w140. Thanks heaps

Curious you said you took out the w126 wind deflector... is that cause it interferes with glass sunroof closing? I’m considering this swap. But I’m concerned now that with sunroof open and no difflector the wind will rush in and sound terrible . Thoughts?
@ElRojo126
4 жыл бұрын
There is some additional air noise, but I never really thought it that much different than what it sounded like with the air dam up. You can test this out by driving at speed with the standard sunroof open and holding down the air dam. One issue can be a resonance effect, exactly like what happens if you have only one window open and everything else closed- you get that low frequency pressure wave. It's analogous to what happens when you blow across the top of an empty bottle to produce a sound. This can be easily resolved by cracking open another window, which eliminates the buildup of pressure within the car. Perhaps more relevant to your question is that I found that I opened the sunroof far less often after the glass roof install. Simply having all that light come in through the glass was really the best effect, and you had no air noise at all. The whole issue is moot if you replace the entire sunroof cartridge with one from a W140. This is a more involved process, as you have to drop the roof liner, but you get the air dam that goes with the glass roof.

@mknmike

This is the most I’ve seen of a nicely done glass sunroof conversion. I assume you did not take the whole w140 cartridge because you don’t have the wind deflector. Correct?
@ElRojo126
4 жыл бұрын
Yes- At the time, I didn't know you could do the whole cartridge. However I found that there were very few occasions where I wanted the roof open, as the sunlight streaming in was enough, and I still had the stately quiet of the ride. So wind noise was never really an issue for me.

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a glass roof that fits the W124. I have two W124 wagons now, and the W140 roof is too big. The W210 roof (E-class 1996+) is also the wrong size.

@@kashiomodashio6455 I have looked at the W202 and it's too small as I recall. I have not done an exhaustive amount of research, but I am still hopeful that another glass roof can be found (maybe from another mid-90s sedan line). From what I've seen on the various Benz forums, no one has been able to find the exact size for the sunroof from other Benz platforms. It does seem a bit odd that the only cross-platform one that works is the W126/W140. I would think that MB would have saved a bit of redesign costs if they carried the W124 into the W210 series. On the other hand, the W210 was really a complete chassis redesign of the E-class, apart from using the M104 and M119 engines from the late W124s and W140s. For instance, the W210 (and W202) sunroof has the motor in the actual sunroof capsule, not in the trunk like the W124/W126/W140.

There is a youtube video on a conversion like this w140 sunroof in a W126 but he has the air deflector which comes up when the sunroof slides back. What would be the difference, is it a different sunroof unit in there?
@ElRojo126
7 жыл бұрын
The only way that I know for the deflector to be operational would be to put in the entire W140 sunroof unit, which would involve dropping the headliner. Not an impossible task, but more involved than what I did. The front edge of the W140 unit is slightly different than the W126 version, to accommodate the plastic trim under the glass roof. The attachment points for the "cassette" are the same in the W126 and the W140.
@tisoy909

Thanks for the clarification, sorry for the late reply. Being that the deflector portion of the W140 sunroof is completely within its cassette, Then can I just transfer over the entire cassette of the W140 as I have the entire unit. I'm hopeful modifications inside of the W140 unit is unnecessary aside from recovering the slider panel to match the rest of the sunroof liner. My task also requires a change to the motor unit in the trunk and control panel along with its associated wiring as this whole mod is going into a Gen 1 W126.

@@tisoy909 How did the install end up for you in the Gen 1? I have an 81 SD and I have a complete cartridge from a 140. Do I need the motor unit and cable as well or can I get away with whatever is there now and just have slide with no tilt? I haven't yet pulled the headliner on mine so I don't know what the old motor and cable look like in my 126.
@tisoy909

@@davidazar2906 I have not completed the install as the car has become a much larger restoration project, repainting, euro gen2 bumpers and converting to 91 palomino interior. I have figured out the entirety of the retrofit for the W140 glass sunroof in the gen1 W126 however and it is considerable and only by getting all the parts was I able to learn just what all is involved. First, you will need the entire W140 sunroof cartridge assembly with glass, The 300SE w126 sunroof cable with 90-91 being preferable as it is an upgrade from an older type. You will also need the 300SE w126 sunroof cable guide tube for the cable as well as this is different from the gen1. And then you will need the Gen2 sunroof motor with harness. The sunroof seal brackets from the gen2 W126 need to be retrofitted in the gen1 opening to support the sunroof seal, I had to do it with small rivets while fashioning a flat bracket to support the rear part of the sunroof seal brackets to the inner roof. This is because the interior contours of the W126 roof in the gen1 is a little different than that of the Gen2. Finally the attachment surface of the sunroof cartridge to the ceiling of the Gen1 must be spaced approximately 4mm lower as the gen 1 attachment surface for the sunroof cartridge is 4mm thinner than it is on the gen2. I had to do lots of measurements to determine that difference. After taking all this consideration for differences, then everything should line up. As far as tilt is concerned, you will have already sourced all parts necessary for tilt function in the process of just getting the glass sunroof in the gen1 altogether so you will have tilt as well as the retracting air dam as you will have the w140 sunroof cartidge assembly in there. Oh you will also need the controller/dome light panel switch unit and the ceiling panel section to accommodates the controller as this part is different in gen2 as well. So Good luck, it is a genuine bitch of a project. Hopefully I will get mine all installed and make a video just like El Rojo.

tisoy909 hey man thanks for the info! So I got the 140 cartridge bolted in place just as a test fit without anything as the 4mm spacer yet like you said. What do you suggest using as a spacer, are washers fine or would I need to fab something else? Will it being spaced lower affect any type of watertight seal to the roof?
