I fitted the same unit to my lathe. But it didn’t work, turned out the pins in the plugs from the scales weren’t compatible with the display unit. It was quite easy to swap the pins around once I found out the right positions. Great video Ade. 👍

The mount looks very solid there and much more rigid than some of the ones I've seen in the marketing pictures for the DRO scales from the manufacturers. I'd like to get a DRO at some point but it's not in the cards for me right now so been doing some other workarounds to get stuff done with what's available. Looking forward to seeing how you mount the other scales as if I ever get a system for my mill-drill the X and Y will be similar, at least. Hope you're doing well!

I brought the same type of mill month ago. I ordered the DRO with the LCD. I have this 7-segment LED type on the lathe. And to say this clear: It is a day and night difference in usability. The LCD type is way more easy to use. And for the mounting: The back part is flat. I directly bolted the scale on the back end and made a very flat bridge over. It looks way more slim. I didn't mounted the chip guards at all. They are quite useless. Mounting the X scale was hard... Had to pull down the sattle to drill the holes on the bottom fixed sattle part. Next I will add a worm gear drive for the Z way, so I can hit buttons to move the head up and down. The wheel up there is annoying.

Hi Ade, I enjoyed the video but having worked with my mill I find I use the quill measurement more than the whole head movement. I’m just wondering if it would be better to attach the DRO to the quill. The one that came with the mill is a bit iffy in my opinion.

Hi Ade, nice work. It was good to watch you fitting the DRO. I fitted one to my Harrison lathe. I also made all bespoke fittings for driving the read heads as I didn't like the supplied ones. Were Bang Good going to supply you a DRO free of charge? If so I think you did the right thing not accepting. There is a certain other channel that has gone down the tubes after adopting sponsorship; it's a slippery slope. Just my view. Thanks for introducing me to Jon's Workshop, enjoying watching his content too. Really looking forward to the next installment of the DRO fit. Thank you.

Hi Ade .. another Fantastic Project with the DRO setup. Looks so neat, just like a store bought Install Kit. Looking forward to seeing the completed project. Hi Ted. the bracket holding the reader is bolted solidly to the moving head on the mill and the weight is supported by the head, accuracy is helped by the rigidity of this bracket and no load is applied to the reader in the scale. Cheers Ade.

Hello Ade, just bought a wm250 lathe from Warco, all good with lathe etc, do i have to spend in excess of £200 to get a good drill chuck for the lathe, i bought a 2mt from Amazon and a live centre they look the business, buttttt i took the three jaw chuck of the head stock and popped them in to the 4mt with an adapter which i've clocked and is running within a thou. the drill chuck is 0.45mm out etc, it has a visable wobble as does the 2mt live centre. Its doing my head in can you recommend a drill chuck and live centre, thanks Glyn. The Albrechts look great but very expensive.

Hi Ade. What happened to the plastic spacers that come between the read head and the scales. Many people think that they are packing pieces for transit but you're supposed to fix everything to the mill and the last job is to remove the spacers thus having the correct gap. All the best. Jim.
@ade63dug

I think those plastic spacers come with magnetic scales. Ade has glass scales. On my lathe I had one magnetic and one glass. I had this little plastic shim that miked up about 0.5mm. Couldn't work out what it was. Then it dawned on me, was for setting the gap between the read head and magnetic scale. I felt a right plonker.

Ade , without this sounding like a silly question . why have a z axis readout when you already have a quill Dro ?
@Jestey6
4 жыл бұрын
I have a Warco 14, and considered removing the quill DRO and installing a short glass scale, in its place, it is possible. Installing a glass reader on the 14 is an attractive option due to it having the head handle mounted on the top of the column, which makes it more difficult to use. I’m considering installing a stepper motor up there to make this easier. I opted to keep the quill DRO, and install a glass Z axis reader, much as Ades has done. I can then use either, depending on what I’m doing, this works well. The down side of the little quill DRO is forgetting to turn it off 🤭
@ade63dug
4 жыл бұрын
It is a good question . I often have to lift the head to change tooling. with the z DRO i can come back to the same spot and keep my datum , Also, when i am machining more heavily , i like to move the head to put the cut on to keep the quill fully retracted.Cheers Ade.

Hi Ade, shouldn’t the z axis DRO be reading the tool height. It looks to me that you will be reading the height of the head unit without the quill. Im only asking the question because I don’t understand the benefit of that. I don’t even have a mill yet. Great videos, I always look forward to seeing them.
@matthiash.4670
4 жыл бұрын
U are right, it will read the head hight. But the quill has its own DRO on this mill, so you can use both in combination and add the values. You can't fit glass scales for the quill on this mill anyway.
@Jestey6
4 жыл бұрын
Matthias H. You can there is video line of it being done, I considered it but opted to keep the fitted DRO and fit a glass DRO as Ade has done. If the quill is locked the ‘head’ DRO measures tool height.
@matthiash.4670
4 жыл бұрын
@@Jestey6 As always: You can do nearly everything. But fiddling a glass scale on the quill is way from elegant. Than you can buy a DRO with 4 axis and combine to in there config, yes... But unless you will use 1 micron skales, the already mounted quill DRO is good enough. You won't get a real benefit from this modification. Especially in contrast to the price and time you will pay for this all together.
