Great video, but I just wish people would show a bit more of the unique Haiku features: The windows look like tabs, because you can use them to group two or more windows together (this is called stacking). Try it by holding the Windows/cmd-key while dragging the tab on top of another window tab. The file system has support for making databases using attributes (almost like a simple version of Excel). It also has quite a lot of query options built in. It's complicated right now, but I hope it will be easier in the future.

Some random comments: - There is definitely Mac influence as Be, Inc.'s CEO was an Apple defector, Jean-Louis Gassée. BeOS originally ran on the same hardware as Macs, during the brief period Apple licensed clones, and at one point Be was in the running to be the Classic MacOS's replacement, before they developed the Mach-based OS X. Look and feel was always at the forefront of BeOS, and aside from its technical innovations, the utter joy of its user interface was what's kept this project going even a quarter century later. - I've heard plenty of people pronounce it "bee-oss," though I think they're wrong. - The name of WebPositive is a take-off on BeOS' original browser, which itself was a play on words: NetPositive. - PoorMan is a bare-bones graphical web server that comes with the OS. How cool is that? - "Snappy" is Haiku's middle name. If you've read this far, I wholly recommend Neal Stephenson's decidedly dated but still spectacular essay "In the Beginning... Was the Command Line."

As a prior BeOS (pronounced as Bee Oh Ess) user, this makes me very happy. The snappiness of the OS was a hallmark of BeOS. All the more impressive when it was done on Pentium II era machines. It was light and fast, but super capable. It never was really feature-complete, but what was there worked really well. And it is in fact Mac inspired. :-) Funny you can tell in the design language, even 20 years later. The one thing I worry about with Haiku is that, as a tribute OS, it is kind of stuck in the era of the OS it is paying tribute to. It's difficult to make progress when doing so necessarily branches the project off into being its own thing, separated from that which it was designed to imitate. That said, I love the BeOS UI and would be willing to stay tethered to 2000 for a while.

Slick. I've been wanting to try this OS. That's fast for an old Celeron. Did I see you only have half a gig of memory on that machine? If only everything could be so efficient. I agree it could be a daily driver if the application support was there. I'm impressed the network drivers worked out of the box. Considering the lack of 3d acceleration, the software rendering is impressive. I noticed no pesky "enter admin password" dialogs. Single user OS? Interesting. Anyhow, relatively new to this channel. I really like you checklist and stopwatch approach. I would have liked to have seen whatever kind of terminal it uses, if any at all. Also, exploring the printer sub system would have been interesting. Also, I am sure there are a ton of interface features that went unexplored. It would be awesome to make another video about this OS and cover those things.

I had a quad-boot with Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and Haiku. Of course Windows had a 120 GB on the 250 GB SSD. :( On Haiku it has neat features like: tabbed and tiled windows. Holding the super/windows key and dragging a window into another window's title bar will cause the window to tab like a web browser. You can also tile windows by holding super/windows and dragging it to the corner of another window. C++ Is really easy on the OS. You can make GUIs and multithreaded applications very easily with its native libraries. It's very fast and I'll definitely use it as my main OS in the future when I'm not bound to flash. My school uses Flash Player for live classes: so we need it :(. TLDR: Great OS

I played around a few days with this on my old Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook with 1.5GB of ram(it's max). I'll say it's really really fast even on sluggish hardware, and very promising once it gets some more polish because as is with the web browser crashing on things like KZitem, and no alternate way of using KZitem on it right now that fully works, among a few other things that annoy me about it on such a small screen I can't say it's fully usable at this point. so I went with Bodhi Linux for a very light weight OS, but will be revisiting Haiku OS in the future for sure once things again get more polished up.

I was also drawn to the MIDI player (probably due to your videos) and it's probably the least stable program on the system, WebPositive sadly being a close second (though, it's being intensively worked on, they're implementing a lot now). Everything else is rock solid. LibreOffice was ported by literally one guy recently and works surprisingly well for such an early release, I was surprised when you actually crashed the thing. The major downside of the OS, for me, is no hardware OpenGL yet (it does make use of Linux graphics drivers), and though it seems to be done, Java isn't on the repos yet.

That would be the quite the adventure! Though it would be immensely difficult. BeOS was designed to run on very specific hardware. The BeOS Company sold a kit, called the BeBox. They were based on the PowerPC architecture. However, BeOS was later ported to x86. That said, BeOS installation images are near impossible to find, and working BeBox hardware even more so. And considering how late in its life it was ported to x86, finding an installation image of BeOS x86 would be like finding the holy grail. PowerPC BeOS **might** work on older Mac hardware, but I don't know specifics about the Be architecture, so it probably wouldn't be compatible. And even if it was, you'd still need to call upon a small miracle to get installation media. As it stands, Haiku is the closest most will come to experiencing BeOS.
