Thorough video. Thanks for sharing. Three questions though: (1) Why did you sand the MDF before painting? (2) What kind of paint did you use? I've been "building" with MDF for 20 years, and haven't yet found a paint that will stick to MDF well. (3) Doesn't your drill/screw-gun work indoors too?

Love the vid mate. Am watching a lot of your content at the mo and it's funny to see an early video, knowing what you do and the tools you have now. I've just set up as self employed and have had an enquiry for almost an identical version of what you have just installed but down both walls u der the top shelf. The client had a budget of £300 total - materials and labour. Not sure if its me but I think that's not practical. I've watched your pricing and set up videos and so have a small idea of what I think I should be charging. Your thoughts would be appreciated on what something like this costs. Keep up the great content mate.

A few questions: 1) you didn't set the shelf into a very shallow dado? Instead relying on the strength of wood screws to hold each shelf? 2)you didn't use the special fasteners made specifically to fasten MDF to MDF?
@GosforthHandyman
7 жыл бұрын
No dados on this project as there was a chance I'd have to change some shelf positions after install (didn't need to in the end). Future similar project coming up using dados. Another option is pocket screws. I use turbogold screws for nearly everything - trust them! What fasteners did you have in mind? Not cams?
@stephenswindell1781
7 жыл бұрын
Ah....gotcha on the dados. I've been very very happy with these Confirmat screws, made specifically for MDF. Though I will admit that I've only used them to hold MDF together, never to support shelves. www.mcfeelys.com/7mm-x-50mm-cabinet-connecting-screws-clear-zinc-plated-pozi-drive-qty-100-8fl80.html

Hey, just watched this as I'm making something very similar (wider for the shelves though so will be using a dado underneath each shelf for support), how did you mount the shelf unit to the wall? I assumed a small softwood attached to the mdf and then onto the wall, but did not see anything in the vid. Good project & really well executed

Andy, I am just about to build this identical thing. Only with a second shelving unit on the left hand-side, ,but identical in design to the other one. Can I ask what screws you used to screw the shelves in place? And how you managed to make sure you drilled exactly in the middle of the 18mm shelf edge?
@GosforthHandyman
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark - normally I'd biscuit, glue & clamp something like this. Just screwed it as I needed to flat pack it to take to site. Just used I think 4 x50mm TurboGold screws. Make a template spacer to set the height of each shelf then mark the top and bottom... this is really hard to explain, I might make a video about it. 😂

I don't have space for spraying but yes, it can often take as long to paint it as it does to build. The client often paints it themselves or pays a separate company to do it... or they can pay me at my rates and make sure the job's done properly. I personally prefer not to do the painting but it's nice to see projects fully finished now and then. 😃👍
