QUICK TIP FOR ANYONE WHO IS THINKING OF BUYING THING OR BOUGHT THIS: Once you are at the stage of mounting the vise on the back of your bench top, make sure not to over tighten the lag screws. I am talking about the ones at 5:15 I used an impact driver with a ratchet bit, but perhaps a socket wrench is much better. If you over tighten the lag screws, it binds up the whole vise and pins it to the bench top, making it unable to slide at all. Scratched my head for a while trying to figure it out but yeah, just loosened the lag screws just a touch and it was able to slide smoothly again. Hope this helps someone! Cheers

Guy, nicely done on the bench and vise install. I’m designing my bench and trying to decide if I want the leg left or right of the vise. If I go left, it will require a longer jaw like yours to get it to align with the end of the bench and I’m concerned about racking. Does the vise rack when you clamp something on the outside of the guide rods? Thank you!

Hi, sorry for the late post. Your video is very thorough, but I have a question about placement of the vise relative to the left legs of your workbench. It looks to be just to the right of the left leg when looking from the front. Assuming this, how far from the leftmost side of the mount (underneath) does your wooden jaw have to reach to the edge of the workbench? If I butt the vise up close to my left leg, I have a 6.25" span to reach the left edge of my workbench. Thanks for any insight here.

I bought this vise, installed it and am disappointed in the amount of top to bottom racking. I am considering fixes for this. One would be to place a shim or washer on the rear lag screws, between the bottom of the vise and the bottom of the bench, in order to create a slightly angeled vise base, thereby reducing the racking. The other fix would be to taper the outer jaw. Did you experience any racking issue? Do you have any suggestions on my solutions or a better solution? Thanks in advance.

Sorry for commenting on a old post, but for those interested, the problem I encountered was that the holes for the guide rails for the vise have a little bit of play in them, maybe 1/16". I'm sure this is to allow for smooth in and out action of the vise. However, it also produces racking in the vise as that 1/16" is compounded as you move the vise face away from the bench. I was able to largely solve this problem and wanted to pas on my fix. My idea was to force the vise brakcet down to eliminate most of that 1/16" gap yet still provide smooth in and out motion. I placed two washers, approx. 3/16 in thicknsess, between the bottom of the bench and the bracket of the vise, placing so the lag screws go through the hole of the washer and penetrate the bench. This creates a downward pressure on the guide rails theregy elimintating the 1/16 gap in the vertical direction. but leaves the horizontal gap unchanged. There is still some racking side to side which I have not yet been able to address. I think that the only practical way to deal with this is to offset the thickness of the workpiece with a similar thickness piece of stock or with a jig such as this. www.leevalley.com/en-gb/shop/tools/workshop/workbenches/benchtop-accessories/69605-vise-rack-stop?gclid=Cj0KCQiA9orxBRD0ARIsAK9JDxR0Zrhq1qC8PYvwKEEkPJVtsnvE6AiUhOSxN2CtNvYczVxPo5PFyBsaAv-xEALw_wcB Overall this is a good vise and after the tweaks I made in the installation, it works great. Dont be afraid to buy it, just be ready for some modifications to the installation.
