I used to play this fantastic game when I was 11 and my mom played it with me sometimes, and it was funny how extremely nervous she used to get when the monsters where chasing her, we had good fun together. Sadly my mom passed away 6 years ago, but certainly this is one of my good memories with her. Thanks for the memories!

I have a story for you... It was Christmas eve back in like '82 or something and I wanted Advanced D&D so bad. I played Dungeon and Dragons in public school so this was the next best thing. Anyways, I was only 13 or so and couldn't afford to buy this game so I asked for it for Christmas. Well, come Christmas eve, I noticed one of the presents for me under the tree was the exact same size as an Intellivision game!! So... when my parents went to bed around midnight, I snuck under the tree and grabbed the present and went into the basement where the Intellivision was setup. I carefully unpeeled the corners and slid the game out of the box. I spent the next 4 hours, with the tv volume turned down low, playing D&D. I can still hear the hisses from the dragons as you entered each cave. Anyways, Before sunrise, I repackaged the game, went upstairs to bed and fell asleep. Come Christmas morning, my mom hands me the present. I tried my hardest to look surprised at what was inside but the tape had come loose and the game just fell out...trust me, you would have laughed your ass off if you were there!

That IS a great story. I have a similar one where, my dad owned a hardware store and one year he got the Coleco tabletop games, Pac-Man and Galaxian and all that, so I'd stay with him late in the store, take the game box into the bathroom, carefully unpack it, slip a battery in and play them. Then, I'd take the battery back out, just as carefully pack everything back in perfectly and retape the box, then put it back on the shelf.

Yeah Ad&d good old intellivision! (Tracking skills were essential) Bats were a pest because they hid the noise the other creatures made. I had to waste an arrow on them, so I could then hear the sounds of the other creatures that might be around me. What always fooled me was going into a blind area hearing a bat then I'd walk in the blind area and a snake or bear would be there also. So this is what I did I'd shot blindly in the direction the bat was in. I'd kill the bat stop and listen. Then if I'd hear a noise I would purposely fire an arrow in the direction It was coming from and be ready to fire more bears and snakes are fast. Good luck tracking.😎

My brother and I were so excited to get a Nintendo Christmas 1987. A few day before we couldn't stand it. My parents put a lock on the garage door, both inside and out. The indoor lock was a combination. But the garage door itself was a regular key. In the middle of the night we took our parents keys and snuck into the garage door, this garage wasn't automatic like it is today. we had to lift it, also without making any noise so we wouldn't get caught. Well, we found our gorgeous Nintendo in the bag on a shelf. We were out of our minds excited. We kept our cool until Christmas. I wonder if my parents ever knew we did that.

This game was part of my childhood and I loved it. It was sort of "open world" in that you start on one side of the map and there are different dungeons and paths to go through. A game that didn't ride on rails was serious innovation back then. And yes, the game had lots of jump scares since you had to explore unknown paths and didn't see the monsters until they were right next to you.

Tracking is essential, there are certain sounds & markings, you could always hear the bats you knew they were close. You had to be careful with the noise bats would make because they'd hide the noise of the bear. The 3 arrow marker indicates that the tough strange animal is close by (keeping track of signs and listening to the noises is essential)

This game is pretty easy once you figure out what you're looking for. Now these are 40 year old memories but I don't think the silver mountains do anything for you. Red was the Hatchet, which you didn't use to go through the forest, instead going from mountain to mountain. Those keys in the purple mountain allow you to pass through the gate. The blue ones contain the boat, allowing you to cross the river. Bats are harmless but they cover up the noises from things which are harmful. Basically you need to run when entering a cavern, also it doesn't hurt to explore everything before going for the cave with the dragon. I'm not saying it was easy because I was so great at it, but because anyone could be- the enemies are not too fast or clever. You make your way to the big mountain, and take on a bigger dragon or something.

Hahaha... I remember when I used to want this game because a couple of kids at school were diehard D&D fans. My parents wouldn't get it for me because it had the name "Advanced" and they figures it would be too hard, lol. The big purple bear monster in this game scared the shit out of me. I remember running when they came charging at me.

I still remember being a little boy, watching my mother play this and 'Beauty and the Beast" In 84, when I was 4 years old.....I still miss those days .....

Are you playing this on HD TV? Or is it from an emulator? The picture quality of your game is really crisp and sharp. Playing it on my CRT TV or on pc monitor (from the original Intellivision console) gives very low picture quality.

If you pressed ‘3’ at the beginning of the game it put it in easy mode. My older brothers could never figure out how there 9 yr old could beat this game😅

I don't think you realise that you can fire into the darkness and around corners. If you fire into diagonal walls your arrow ricochets off. Then if there's another diagonal wall it'll bounce off that as well. Very handy tactic if you hear a monster somewhere nearby.

Good advice.

@@doteaters Yeah, not having explored an area doesn't have any effect on your arrows. As soon as I heard a monster lurking somewhere nearby, I used to fire into the darkness in the hope that it'd either hit something right in front of me, or the arrow would bounce down the passage and hit the monster that way. Sometimes I could even kill the most dangerous dragons before they appeared!
