15 year city FF here. There was absolutely ZERO reason for FF's to be on that roof at that point. Ventilation? That roof was completely vented. You are not getting any more heat or fire out of that building by having those guys up there. The risk/reward calculation here by IC was extremely flawed. Those guys should not have been up there with that much fire showing out of the roof.

Have to kind of agree with you to a point. There's a 30 minute version of the video that shows them successfully finishing up, knocking down the roof fire and getting off the roof w/o incident or injury. Think that there will be a lot of debate on the validity of this ventilation op when used as a training film both pro and con.

Also, there were a half dozen cars and trucks parked right next to the building and a large low structure directly behind the involved structure as exposures. If the structure had become fully involved it would have become a much larger conflagration. Also the beauty store and auto parts store on the ground floor had hazardous class B combustibles. Looks like they confined the fire mostly to the second floor. I say good job.
@suffer247

@@wikolib6821 They would not have stopped a conflagration from the roof, they'd be dead. There was nothing to save at this point, the building is a loss. They should've been setting up their aerials for ladder pipe ops to prevent spread. Instead, both aerial ladders were committed to egress here.

This fire was knocked down shortly after the video ends. Just because a fire doesn’t go out as soon as you get water on it does not mean you need to retreat. Center hallway fires are “bread and butter” for the LA City FD, especially the downtown area companies. Truck Company personnel are highly trained and know how to read roofs - including when to stay and keep working and when to retreat. This roof did not collapse. No FFs fell through this roof. Their efforts on the roof helped achieve a knockdown preventing total loss of this building.

The upper floor of this occupancy is a center hallway residential apartment complex. The tactics that we utilize are to send our Truck Co's to the roof and preform a center hallway cut (trench ventilation) to allow a tenable means of egress for interior firefighting crews and occupants to exit. This type of older occupancy allows the fire to spread rapidly from unit to unit. It also allows the fire to get into the common attic space and begin to run in all directions of the building. Rooftop crews then fall back from the original opening cuts and begin to preform additional ventilation openings in order to draw the fire upwards and out of the attic spaces. While these operations on the roof are under way, interior crews are extinguishing the seat of the fire and those within the attic. For a few minutes these types of fires look spectacular and chaotic to the layperson. This operation went exactly according to plan and our training. Be assured that rooftop crews are always monitoring fire & roof conditions and will withdraw to safety as warranted. As a note... this fire was an arson caused incident, as a result of a domestic dispute.

What you are seeing is a classic roof vertical roof ventilation operation in progress by truck (ladder) personnel. The reason that the firefighters on the roof are not using a lot of water is that there are firefighters in the building doing offensive interior attack and they don't want to shoot the fire towards them or blast them with hot water. The guys on the roof are using just enough water to protect themselves and knock the roof fire down. There is a longer 30 minute video that shows the ventilation op completed, the roof fire knocked down and the firefighters exiting the roof. The firefighters also have to protect "exposures" (surrounding buildings, vehicles etc.). So they are performing a multi pronged op: roof ventilation, interior search and rescue, interior fire attack and exposure protection. 1. Life safety 2. Incident stabilization 3. Property conservation. RECEO-VS: Recue, Exposure, Confine, Extinguish, Overhaul, Ventilate, Salvage. They will be using these videos as training aids for many years to show an example of a classic roof ventilation op. These LA City guys are real pros, Top Gun. (From a retired FF)
