When I first saw Black Orpheus as a child, I honestly thought that she was Brazilian. Very little is written about her here in the United States. Jospehine Baker is one of the most successful Black American entertainers who traveled to France and became a big star. It's a shame that Marpessa was unable to receive the same type of international, superstar status. She was beautiful, talented and definitely should have had a flourishing career as an actress.

It's wonderful that despite the gaping years between the film's release and today - we can learn more and more about the movie and the cast - for me the gorgeous marpessa dawn was a huge surprise when I learned that she was American - sadly her career fizzled out - that is can be explained by her obvious uncertainty and timidity as seen in this interview - even the best talent has to be ambitious and aggressive in pursuing their career - she didn't seem to have any of that - at least she and we have BLACK ORPHEUS

She spent most of her career being a stage actress. Maybe she didn’t want to be a movie star.
@chillbro2275

@@stefannydvorak7919 Possibly. The pressures beautiful women (especially back then) faced just trying to advance a career of any kind (film being no exception) could very likely have kept her away from striving to be a movie star. And it's hard to imagine someone who decides to move to the other side of the world as and make a career that requires one to audition as "timid."

Her Dad Filipino Man and Mom Black Lady. This mix. Her *father* is from Asia Pacific. It is why she is particularly so beautiful.
