Radio Wira Wiri spoke to OKI who stayed at the hotel Grand Karel V in Utrecht. Even though he had a bit of jet lag, he didn't mind to talk about the struggles of being an Ainu.
Together with his son Manaw he gave a demonstration on the tonkori.
Very few preserve the tradition of the tonkori; Oki Kano, or OKI, is one of the few surviving players of this five-string harp, performed by the indigenous Japanese Ainu people. Kano revives and reinvents Ainu folklore, meshing it with international influences as varied as dub, Irish folk, throat singing, African drumming, and music from Central Asia.
