The world will never truly end. Apocalypsism is a consumerist cowards worldview designed to cede personal power to an external Saviour. I have never been comfortable with that. As Dr Justin Sledge pointed out…sitting back waiting for cosmic redemption almost always means physical death or in many cases wholesale slaughter. “no one is coming to save us” while also terrifying and fatalistic puts the onus on us as humans to clean up our act, our planet and allow a more harmonious life-affirming religiousity to arise. :-) We can do it but will we? It’s all about the ancient primeval dance with the forces of nature and even super nature. Yin and Yang, balancing of two opposing energy systems, merging into oneness: striving for equilibrium in a destructive tyrannical world and maintaining Sanity. (Which is in itself subject to fashions and tyrannical dichotomies and diversions and even inversions. The answer my friends is blowing in the wind.

Riiiiight?!!! Firstly, it was insane to me also to hear this was the least read book, to which I might now add, it is most assuredly, the mostly widely “misinterpreted” book amongst apocalyptic christians the world over!! I have always had questions and doubts and admittedly, deeply ingrained fears and concerns, but this series, along with much study and introspection has helped me to better understand and more easily disseminate not just that book, but other equally confusing and frustrating apocalyptic books. Always learning, always growing, always coming to the conclusion that I will never truly “know”, but I will continue on and continue to grow and learn. What a blessing this channel has become.

Really just overwhelmed with gratitude that such an honest, down to earth, utterly thorough survey of the history of Kabbalah exists, that which eventually accumulated into a thing that I have marveled at but was utterly intimidated. Thanks for being. I got giddy, lol, when you opened this lesson with something like, "and Kabbalah is like still some 1,200 years years away." Without context such as this history, learning theory, is like hitting golf balls on the moon. So thanks for bringing the gravitation; without it, who could build a palace?

I think a reason why so many people think (or hope) the end of the world will happen in their generation, and a strong belief in that, comes from a projection of the fear of death in combination what they were taught religiously. And a hope that their zealotry was not in vain, and a moment where all people can witness they were on the right side all along.

My favorite YT channel by far. I have been thinking awhile about apocalypticism - I think it's definitely a reflection of the mind. You kind of said as much a couple of times, and here I thought it was a profound realization that was mine alone, ha. Humans have the cool frontal lobes - and among the animal kingdom, we are the ones working on Justice. Injustice is unacceptable. We're actually doing pretty well, despite what I think about it most of the time. (Because in our misguided efforts to mitigate injustice (with control measures) , we create more injustice, eh.) Seems to me like this larger dance with Law and Justice is reflected back in our religions in some really cool ways, the more I learn about it. We want rewards for good people, and punishments for evildoers - and predictability, as you mentioned. This is my favorite thing to think about. Thank you!

no, THIS is the most important topic in modern esotericism...I've said that now about a few of your videos. You are producing excellent content. Lack of discrimination and rigor on the one hand allowed "New Thought" to flourish and kept it popular throughout the 20th century, but there has been no real philosophy involved since the 16th century in the West until the last couple decades at best. And I totally agree that occult "philosophy" is scarcely better in this regard.

There are two things I like reading and obtaining information and research on. One is Cosmic Horror that was pioneered by many horror and science fiction authors who used the universe's indifference as a template to ask deep philosophical questions And the other is religion and mysticism and where the stories came from and what was the historical mindset about them. This poured questions into my brain that inspired me to want to write a Cosmic Horror story that always asks this question. If one was able to look behind the cosmic curtain and see God for what it truly is and is not what Humans assumed it would be. Would that person's faith falter, enhance, or will that person crumble in existential terror and madness in knowing what really happens to us when we die and what the divine really is?

It's a good point. While understanding things is a good thing, it doesn't, by default, give us power over them. You could know everything there is to know about how a hurricane works, but it's still going to wreck your house. Knowledge does give us power in that, using the same analogy, we could develop technology to predict hurricanes more efficiently so people have more time to evacuate, or use the information to build studier houses, but the knowledge by itself does nothing.

So good! Super fascinating where the human mind and societies find resilience. Moving away from the apocalyptic makes sense, but there will need to be a new story to tell. Is this why Kabbalah is so complicated? Does it keep the spirited youth preoccupied this way? This is what I admire so much about certain aspects of Judaism, especially the introspection of the self in relation to all the rest of existence. There is a certain presence of mind or consideration or something that I feel is lacking now. The best way I can describe it is the story of the farmer reacting badly to a starving man stealing some of his crop and the lesson being that grace would have been to feed the starving thief. Always trying to uplift instead of caving to the ego's desire for retribution. I also really love atonement. Trying to balance out a wrong as best as possible. It's a matter of accountability. I just love this series!!

You say that apocalypticism went its own way when Christianity split from Judaism, and rabbinical Judaism abandoned apocalypticism--but I'd argue that Islam is exactly such an attempt to reconcile rabbinicalism with apocalypticism. Islam positioned itself from the very beginning as a movement of reconciliation between the various warring religious traditions and strains of the region.

@TempvsMortis
2 жыл бұрын
@@AkramSaheb That's the point I made. The thing we're talking about is the degree to which the planned end of the world is the key driver of the religion. The arrival of the Mahdi is a much bigger focus for Twelver Shi'i, given the special place that the Imam's hold. Similarly, Christianity emerged as an apocalyptic religion, and Christians believe that Jesus will return on Judgment Day, which means the literal return of God in the flesh. Christianity is at its core a religion about Judgement Day, which Judaism has generally not been. Islam seems to try and balance those two ideas, but with the return of the last Imam, shi'i Islam puts a greater emphasis on waiting for the end of history. Over time though, religions seem to have become more apocalyptic, including Judaism, but I still think it's fair to say that the end of the world and final judgment are more important concepts in some religions than others.

When I taught a class to a bunch of doctors on how to incorporate a patient's spirituality into treatment, I included Marxism as an example of a secular religion with all the same ear-marks as most other religions and I might add some of the same pros and cons.
