To anyone whom it may help i live in Vancouver Washington. I have been growing an Arbequina olive since 2009. It is in ground on a slight south facing slope. It has survived tempratures as low as 11 f just fine. I have had fruit off of it for 3 years now. November is when I harvest.

Just planted two Ukrainian cultivars in the Chehalem mountains, just north of the Yamhill County border. Stuck about 25 cuttings with IBA as an insurance policy in case the trees don't make it through the winter. The spot I selected was just below the crest of a hill facing the south side of the barn where I'm hoping the microclimate is a bit warmer and protected from the high winds we have on our property. The soil was richer than expected; about 2 feet of topsoil intermixed with large granite boulders (how I managed to dig in the one spot where I could get a large hole without hitting a boulder is beyond me.) I planted the trees about 3 feet apart with no other competition with the idea that the two varieties would pleach together and provide a consistent source of pollen and help protect each other from the wind. They are planted at a diagonal relative to the general movement of the sun and will be trained in opposite directions so that they will effectively act as a single tree. I added about a foot of wood chip mulch to help insulate the roots and then stacked a bunch roughly 12+ inch rocks around the base of the trees to act as thermal mass and help protect against digging by wildlife. I surrounded the trees with welded wire fencing and chicken wire to deter browsing by deer and other wildlife. I may wrap the fencing with plastic and/or agribon as the threat of frost approaches, since most of the growth is still pretty young and tender. Definitely did a few things counter to the recommendations here. Looking forward to seeing how my little experiment pans out.

That is seriously awesome👏🏽👏🏽 great work! Would love to hear how it works out for you. I am in Washington and I will try some of your tips and tricks. Where did you get your Ukrainian cultivars and from where? Do you have a Instagram for your farm? ✌🏾

@@OBRfarm I picked up my trees at a local nursery. This varieties have been trialed here for a number of years, but I'm not sure how much further north they would tolerate without significant protection. If you can't find them locally, I know that One Green World carries them and ships, though I've never purchased from them, so I can't speak to the quality of the plants or service. And yeah. Search for my screen name on IG and you should find me. I haven't had the time to do videos, but I still do fairly regular updates over there.
