This is the day I first heard of Scanimate. I can't believe this wonderful technology isn't better known. I grew up in the 70s/80s and, like anyone of that age or older, must have seen it in action thousands of times. Being particularly interested in computer graphics and quirky tech makes my ignorance even more puzzling. This is such an incredible find. Thanks for keeping the equipment used and teaching us about it!

I am a software developer used to digital computing. I had no idea such an incredible analog computer was used to produce TV effects. I would guess this was in service from the 60s until early 2000s. Thanks for sharing this bit of TV history with a new generation.

As a child of the digital age, I'm impressed by this whole "other way" to do these things without digital processing!

This is definitely an art and a science. I can imagine the stress of having to do animations for live television events.

@@anonymousarmadillo6589 Scanimate animations were done live for the televised 1978 Grammy Awards, I believe it was the only time they were ever done live on TV. And from what I remember reading about it, it was a quite stressful experience, but they pulled it off without a hitch.

I'm really enjoying learning about this! I honestly never knew you could do things like this with just analog equipment. Thanks a lot for the video!

Thank you for explaining the Scanimate. I used one at Dolphin Productions in 1978-79, and created beautiful color abstract effects to music. I eventually taught the visualization of music at San Francisco State and UC Berkeley. Would love to get my hands on the Scanimate again to visualize MIDI music with my program Muse X-Rayer to generate the primitives. Thanks, Sandy

+Sandy Cohen It's a shame there isn't an underground movement for that sort o thing, especially by the group interested in "Circuit Bending" electronics.

+Dave Sieg Of course, I can not buy one, but if one were available, I might be interested in trying out some ideas I seem to always see when listening to piano sonatas. What would it take to get one up and running? What are the possibilities of making a ScaniMate available on line? At Berkeley, on my floor of Soda Hall, a pillow-sized blimp would cruise at eye level, enter open doors, navigate, listen and speak to you, all controlled from an internet browser. Could not the pots, sliders and snaps be set digitally? The Scanimate creates a unique art, and maybe it could be an analog system, controlled digitally. All the best for the new year, Sandy Cohen, Blue Hill, Maine

Dave, thank you for these videos and for preserving this machine. As a lover of analogue audio synthesis, this is something I could get lost doing forever. Are there any modern analogue motion graphics machines being produced? I'm a student at App State btw, fellow blue ridge fella!

I have a mind for electronics and anything electromechanical or hands-on. I definitely understand the concepts presented here and appreciate your sharing this suite of tools. What happened to the studio as times changed? Did you go out of business or get into CGI or something completely different? Is anyone still asking for retro splashes?
@davesieg

The studio continues to sprout new goodies as so much of this analog gear becomes available on ebay for pennies. And I continue to get inquiries from producers wanting that retro look only Scanimate can create!
