Both sides have had good and bad times since. I’m a Baggies fan and this side should have won at least 1 trophy. Like the tractor boys and others we have been up and down ever since. Sadly the way football is now I can’t ever see any team outside of the big six winning Premier titles, FA Cups or League Cups in the future. Money has ruined football.

Now 13 years later it’s even worse. Outside the top 6 wealthiest clubs the chance of any other club winning a title or cup is getting smaller. The decision to end FA Cup replays because the FA can’t stand up to the Premier League is another example of money counting more than the game. Smaller clubs in the past had the hope of a 3rd round match against a big club with possibly a money spinning replay. Now it’s one game and that’s it.

I'm a Villa fan but in the second half of the Seventies it was all Forest and Liverpool in the league and Man United & Arsenal in the FA Cup. The League Cup was were Villa did well. Then, around '80/'81, my team and the likes of Ipswich, Southampton, WBA had a real presence. Todays game is all too formulaic, predictable and boring. Both domestic cups will soon make way for expansionist European centred competitions. A shame.

Scary. I was 9 when this game was played and I remember it so well....Talbot's goal, Alan Wileys bandages after the head clash, the late penalty. I wanted WBA to win because they beat the almost invincible Nottingham Forrest (who won the league and the league cup) in the quarter-finals.

Wot , no John Wile ? My most vivid memory - massive bloodied head bandage. Also I feel this commentary is genuine .... only in real time would a commentator , at full time , almost say that the ref is "looking at his whistle and blowing his watch" - as here.
