After the 5th goal went in the United fans started throwing coins and things into the Town fans, the little old lady sitting next to me was hit in the temple with a United bracelet. Sat next to her every other Saturday for 5 years and all she had to say was, it was worth it!

Ipswich are a really unique and quite special side. Very small town, certainly at this time, and a smallish club but had tremendous success in the game in 1970s and early 1980s. One of the top sides in Europe and a team full of great players. And then before that Sir Alf Ramsey won the championship. So they competed with the very best for a sustained period and will always have tradition in their blood.

Our coach driver thought United were playing Norwich and was almost there (travelling along the A47) before the mistake was realised. Due to this it looked like we’d be late arriving for the match and my fried lamented “we’ll probably get beaten 7-0!”). We got into the ground just as the game was kicking off. I seem to remember that Dave Sexton told Martin Buchan to mark Eric Gates who dropped back into midfield leaving a massive 'hole’ in our United’s which Ipswich exploited to the full. TBC

Cont. Ipswich had a great side in the late 70s/early 80s and if they’d have played as well in the first half of 79-80 (13th with 21 points after 21 games) as in the second (picking up 33 points out of a possible 42) they’d have won the league with points to spare. United had a fantastic away following in the late 70s/80s which unfortunately contained a lot of undesirables who often went only to cause trouble e.g. at Norwich in 77 which led to a short ban (although this was easily circumvented!).

Never seen such inept defending by a First Division side, not even one headed for relegation. Had I been a United fan at the time, I would have demanded an investigation. Could gambling interests have affected the outcome?

I'd forgotten what a brilliant player Ashley Grimes was. On his day, better than Messi.

Great performance by Ipswich, although the main entertainment was provided by the Man Utd defence - absolutely hilarious - and what a day for Gary Bailey. Also nice work by Gerry Harrison - ITV´s all-time best football commentator.

@@colinwalker1523 mate I'm a Norwich fan but a 6-0 home victory to United no matter how good or bad they were then is still an achievement, let them have their day, they were a quality team in the 70s
