Iqra school's "Te wiki o te reo" moment was to play the Poi rākau game, which is a Māori stick game aimed at improving hand-eye coordination as well as listening skills.
A kaikaranga (caller) calls out either "mauī" or "matau" - which is left and right
Tamariki then try to step in that direction quickly, and MUST grab onto the adjacent stick before it hits the ground.
If the kid does not move in the right direction, they bump into their mate and lose. If they don't move fast enough, the stick falls to the ground.
So it is paramount to move correctly and quickly 🙂
