Nice review. 👍 I was curious how it performs at T2 though... It’s a big jump going from wide open to f/2.8. Did things not improve much contrast-wise until then?

That is a good question and you are right we should have demonstrated it at T2 as well. Since we already shipped it back I can't run any more tests. I do believe that there was some gradual improvement (this is how optics typically behaves - its not like things get significantly better right at a specific aperture). My guess is that it is already pretty sharp at least at T2.5 as for T2 - my guess (with no lens in hand) is that it is not optimal but still better than what you saw with T1.5. In general I am not sure that sharpness is the reason I would go or not go for this lens. I would look at the entirety of this lens characteristics (both performance wise and things such as size/weight, handling and of course the more basic focal length and finally price) and compare it to other Cine options on the market that might be relevant (you have Samyang on one side and say Sigma on the other side) to see what might be right for you.

Got to say that lack of contrast at T1.5 is astounding. Like Rokinon levels of being not up to par wide open but at a much higher price. I hope they improved it somewhat in the production models

Nice review. Would have loved to have seen it next to the Sigma 50mm Art. I know, slightly different focal lengths but curious about the bokeh. I know the Sigma would probably trump the sharpness of the Irix.

I didn't test the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art myself but have seen enough reviews to know that it is a fantastic lens and one of the best in the category (maybe the only better one we used/tested was the Zeiss Otus 55mm). Just remember that this is a Cine lens and both the Sigma and Zeiss are stills lenses.

@@IddoGenuth thanks for the quick and considered reply. Absolutely. I mention the Sigma only because Irix also has a 45mm photo lens with the same optical formula as this cine lens. Probably a better comparison to the Sigma minus the motor / auto-focus.
