Can be multiple reasons, but we can only tell once we see it. If you mean white smoke as in a misty and slow moving smoke it might be just vapourized fuel. This happens occasionally on very rich tuned carburetors. OR, it can occur due to improper inlet valve seating, where the compressed air and fuel may leak from the inlet side. This is generally a fast moving plume of smoke. And now, how to see if your inlet valve is not properly seated: remove your carburetor throttle slide and check if you can see a black ring on the face which faces towards the engine side. It should be a thick black ring sometimes caked with soot. Also, check if you have soot/ carbon deposit on the inlet port of the engine. This generally shows a leaky or improperly seated valve
