Paul was great for his time, but as the band got bigger and its vision more expansive, he wasn’t able to give them what they needed. He struggled while recording the second record. Bruce’s theatrical approach to singing freed up the band and allowed them to soar to new heights.
@STORMCombatSystem

No Maiden performance will ever top this. There is just so amazing energy in it, an air of anger, ambition, violence and hope. No theatrics, no huge stadiums, just pure heart and great playing. And, of course, Paul Di Anno whose voice I consider among the best rock voices ever, plus the impeccable drum machine called Clive Burr, may he rest in peace. Bruce is an excellent singer and Nicko is a good technician (although rhythmically somewhat unstable), but that line up was just the best, the true Iron Maiden. Harsh, dirty, punky, street metal - and it has aged so much better than the Bruce stuff of the stadium era.

These comments are so stupid...... please explain why he is the best... in fact explain why hes better than nicko..... aside from clive burr bashing the crap out of the cymbals too often I mean....... and this comment also means burr was better than lars ulrich, neil peart, michael portnoy, cozy powell, tommy aldrich hell the list goes on (except dave grohl who is laughably overrated)

The first two albums of iron maiden are my favourite albums, it is as good it iron maiden or music in general gets for me, not that i do not like the subsequent albums, they have an incredible body of work, i just think the sound was very different in the first two albums, they certainly feel faster and more aggressive, due to the punk influence no doubt, for me those two albums are a gift to people like me that love heavy metal.

Fantastic track...I think Phantom of the Opera really show cases what a classic maiden track should be. Clive, Dennis and Paul all helped get Maiden off the ground and we should not try and air brush them out of maiden history. Maybe one day get Paul, Bruce and Blaze all on the same stage singing together would be epic!!

Still in high school at the time, and living in Queens, New York, I became a Maiden fan in 1980 when their debut LP was released, as I was getting into the NWOBHM scene. The early '80's ruled for heavy metal! When The Number of the Beast was released in 1982, I was blown away by Bruce's vocal abilities.

Same but I discovered Maiden a year ago (I'm a teen that's the reason). Well, I heard things about Eddie and Bruce Dickinson and some songs like Afraid to shoot strangers, Fear of the Dark or Aces High, but I became a fan a year ago. I discovered Iron Maiden with Dickinson and when I listen to Paul or Blaze, I respect them and they're cool they did great job in Maiden but Bruce is Bruce.

I've been looking so long for you now you won't get away from my grasp. You've been living so long in hiding in hiding behind that false mask. And you know and I know that you ain't got long now to last. Your looks and your feelings are just the remains of your past. You're standing in the wings, there you wait for the curtain to fall. Knowing the terror and holding you have on us all. Yeah, I know that you're gonna scratch me, maim me and maul. You know I'm helpless from your mesmerizing cat call. Keep your distance, walk away, don't take his bait. Don't you stray, don't fade away. Watch your step, he's out to get you, come what may. Don't you stray, from the narrow way. I'm running and hiding in my dreams you're always there. You're the Phantom of the Opera, you're the devil, you're just out to scare. You damaged my mind and my soul it just floats through the air. Haunt me, you taunt me, you torture me back at your lair
