I’m 17 years old I have been struggling for the last 3 months after I had my first panic attack. I’m in so much mental pain I’m exhausted. I was improving and then got hit with a huge setback for the last week I have been getting waves of anxiety and depression. It’s been really hard for me to just accept it. I feel like I’m going to have to live like this forever, my intrusive thoughts are horrible. I have read Paul David’s book that has helped immensely as well as your videos. I’m scared of my anxiety, I’m scared of the feeling, I’m scared of panic attacks. I don’t know if what I am experiencing is normal? I’m anxious, on edge and depressed almost all day until later in the day? This has been going on for a week now. I though I was getting better then I slowly saw myself going down the hole again. Please someone give me hope. Is depression with anxiety Normal? I’m a junior in high-school. I missed prom, parties, exams. This controls my life, I am trying so hard to accept but how do I do that? Every-time I feel like I am making progress I get a huge amount of anxiety and depression that lasts days.

Please help me. My anxiety so bad. It's to the point, where it's hard for me to go to work. I feel anxious all the time! To the point where it's hard for me to open up to people and family. I feel like im going to die constantly. I've taken many antidepressants. But... I don't think they help. I just want to live life, show who I am as a person and not let this anxiety cripple the rest of my life. I just want to be happy and relax.

100% what I’ve had to teach myself through the past 15 years. Unfortunately we can’t depend on doctors for help with anxiety 99% of the time. They do not know the science behind it. They’re stuck in the past and haven’t moved forward in the study of it. My anxiety could have been subsided years ago if I could have just had someone who knew what they were talking about speak to me. Instead, I had doctors that just wanted to prescribe me medication instead of actually help me. Up until a year ago, I thought I had a permanent chemical imbalance. Until I realized just what you said. That chemicals are constantly changing to adapt to our environment and mental state. Sure, genes play a role in everything. But not to the point that we are permanently unable to heal our state. This would have saved me so much wasted time and anxiety.

I also had this kind of experience with medical professionals. My primary care physician talked to me about taking medicine for it and said some people are just born with a chemical imbalance. I talked to my therapist about this and he said many medical professionals will do that because its the widely accepted by them. His way of seeing meds was as a wheelchair that you use while you are recovering from an injury. I also asked him about the chemical imbalance thing and the message I got was that it isn't very conclusive, but that professionals do go by it. It sucks that people just look at it and say well here are meds for this imbalance now bye.

@@stardewhillbully it’s rare to be born with a chemical imbalance. That doesn’t mean that medication can’t be used as a crutch until you can gain control again. Medication is life saving for many people. Including myself. But I do agree. Many doctors just throw benzos and medication at people who could simply go through CBT and therapy and rewire their brains. For that reason, I believe that we need mental health DOCTORS.

@@moturn8614 100% agree. I've wondered about taking asking my therapist for medication sometimes. My anxiety has been very bad at times. I ended up in a hospital for it. I thought that I was having an asthma attack. I became very educated that year about how it can make you feel like you can't breathe. It was also an experience where the staff were irritated with me. I got the feeling they didn't want me there. And they gave me printed papers with info about meds. I felt like such a disappointment and waste of time for the staff there. Its such a bane in life.

@@stardewhillbully Funny thing is the chemical imbalance theory was already pushed aside as a gross oversimplification and deeply inaccurate almost as soon as it came about in the late 60s however it was held on to but pharma companies and used as a convenient easy to digest reason to sell their drugs despite knowing they couldn't cure anything, even funnier is according to leading neuro scientist joseph ledoux the companies are getting out of the anti anxiety business and starting to just re purpose those same drugs...

Where is the evidence for that though? I have severe anxiety and mental disorders 24/7. They never go away no matter what and it’s torture, I’ve suffered as long as I can remember. Even though most of my mental disorders developed of childhood traumas etc. But it never gets better and it almost seem like my mind doesn’t have the ability to produce the chemicals it needs. What if there isn’t a solution? And what’s scary is that what can you do if you don’t tolerate ssri etc?

He worries about everything! We will have a few calm weeks and then it’s off the charts again. How can I help him? He tries to blame everything going wrong on us. That we aren’t doing enough to help him. How can I help him? He won’t even take natural supplements like magnesium, ashwaghanda, or omega 3’s. He’s afraid they will make him feel sick. Yes - this is so true! Even my psychiatrist when i was struggling said meds won’t fix or cure depression or anxiety and he also told me Drs don’t actually know why antidepressants work only that they work for ‘some’ people - also telling me pretty much all antidepressants are based on the ones first identified in the 1950s and that since then they have just been tweaked. He said meds would help me get to the starting line and do all the things that would actually help - he was a great Dr and person I feel lucky to have had someone who knew and would tell me the facts as they are. I went forward in my recovery made loads of changes and I’m very much recovered - i’m so glad I listened rather than just relied on meds alone or believed a had a ‘chemical imbalances’ because I may have not put the work in - or changed the very things that were causing my trouble. I am no longer on ADs, but they did help me, but only so much and i was never under any illusions about them or an ‘imbalance’ you have to change and you can, its hard but also amazing.

Great video shaan! I've struggled with this theory for years. I often said if yer depressed or anxious there is a reason for it. Life factors etc. These Doc's are quick to tell you there is something physically wrong with yer brain, which often just feeds the symptoms and makes you feel worse. The thing I've learned about meds is that they can help and be used as a tool by putting more of a chemical in yer brain. The problem is if you find one that works and get passed all the the nasty side effects, you and yer brain become reliant on it. Eventually it will become addictive, stop working over years,, and when you try and stop you get nasty withrawels. Read about Cymbalta... they say its worse than coming off heroin. I've tried many medications n supplements with little success. Usually I can't tolerate the side effects. I also have a problem with the thought of having to be on a pill the rest of my life to make my life better. The struggle continues...

Shaan I tell everybody I know that suffers with anxiety about you! I try to get them to watch your videos but they think they need to listen to their therapist and take meds and everything instead of trusting the process. And I tell them what I went through and they still somehow think that what I went through isn't as bad as them and that it's too good to be true. They really believe they'll never get better and I don't know how else to help them see that if they just educate themselves and do what you say in these videos that they can and will get better. I was seeing 2 therapist that had no idea what dpdr even was. How can we trust therapist to help us when they have to Google what we're going through.... I wish so bad that people would listen to me but I can't help them if they're not willing to get the help they need.... 😩
@byebyepanic

It’s important to find someone who truly understands what you’re going through. I’ve met therapists who understand and those that don’t. There’s really no standardization in the field unfortunately. My recovery came from others who went through this. In terms of people thinking they’re worse than you-i know the feeling. I’ve even had anxiety healers claim what I’ve gone through isn’t legit or as bad as them. It can come across as offensive when people downplay your suffering. The best you can do is live life as fully and freely as you can. Sometimes people are attached to their own misery that when you show them a better way - they’ll resent you. Glad you’re doing better btw 😉
