Ed Unicycles New Zealand [Ep.3]
Cheers Nate and Fran for a fantastically spontaneous evening!

I just wanted to clarify a few points that I didn't discuss fully in this video. First off I have absolute no problem with how the road crew dealt with the situation. In fact I think they handled it very well by telling me the facts and presenting me a "safe" option for traversing that 7km section.
Short of riding back on myself 400miles there was not alternate route.
What I stated as "the rule" for cycling around the world with an unbroken line is really just my rule. When I set out 2.5years ago on this unicycle excursion I intended to travel under my own power (while on land - no swimming on this trip!) for the eternity of the ride. So far I have managed just that and as a result the pressure not to break the unbroken line has grown.
I doubt my 'circumnavigation around the world by unicycle' attempt will ever be official. Guinness have some pretty strict rules and the big one I've already broken multiple times is that I can't stop moving for more that 14days. So this isn't about me not wanting to break official rules to get the official record, but rather not wanting skip a section, break my rules and lose motivation for the trip. Because what, after taking this first ride, is there to stop me from just hitching up the next mountain pass or into that next city?
I've found that not even giving myself the option of skipping a section weirdly makes the trip easier. Ceirtainly not physically but mentally. I've already accepted that I'm unicycling the whole way, so when I'm knackered climbing a mountain pass and someone in a car pulls up and offers me a ride to the top, I don't have to have that mental battle with myself whether or not to accept it. Does that make sense?
Did I put the importance of the trip over my own life in this video? Perhaps. But not wanting to sound arrogant I've had plenty of experience of riding much sketchier roads and I personally didn't think that this one felt all that dangerous.
I'm raising funds and awareness for 'School in a Bag'. Find out more:
