yeah but 15-20 years ago the Elon "hype" was very different and his failings as an exploitative boss were less publicized. but in the end, saying that Elon lending his "hype" to a project is of material value is highly speculative. yeah, people gave him money and a certain generation of workers were probably taken in by all his lofty promises and the way he talks about "science". But being able to talk convincingly means that you're great a marketing, not that you're great at science and engineering or have any particular insight into either. These days we can point to the mountain of broken/empty promises he's made so the mystique doesn't work the same and when pressed on more than surface level concepts he often tries to answer vaguely or pivot. It's been illustrated very clearly with Twitter when people ask him directly what is wrong with the code base when he's claiming there needs to be a complete rewrite and he reacts with anger when questioned instead of being able to name off the top of his head 3-5 notable issues.

That Elon defender wasn't so bad. Elon had a lot of people fooled for a relatively long time, and I think most people who were not particularly paying attention had a generally positive impression of him. It's going to take a while for some people to adjust to reality. I have a guy at work who genuinely thinks Elon bought Twitter to save free speech. The guy on this stream by comparison seems to accept facts, he just needs some time to reasses. I will say a couple of things about electric cars, and Teslas in particular. In Norway where I live, electric vehicles and make up about 25% of all vehicles on the road at this point, and over 80% of new vehicles sold. Teslas are by far the largest single brand here, and to be fair, they have been leading the way in market adoption of EVs. They are not seen as luxury vehicles here, and are competitively priced, especially considering things like range and carrying capacity. I say this as someone who did not choose a Tesla himself, as I have some problems with both their quality record and UI design, as well as a strong dislike of their CEO. But for the company itself, I have to give credit where it is due. When it comes to the environmental aspecst of EVs, they are *not* the solution to our problems with personal transportation. The solution is public transport and well-planned cities which are designed for people rather than cars. EVs are still better than fossil fuel cars though. The impact on global warming will depend a lot on how power is generated where you live, but at least with electric vehicles, you can approach this problem at the power plant level, rather than having millions of little gasoline generators in varying condition driving around. It is also a fact that EV engines are vastly more effective than gasoline engines (80-90% vs 20-30%), so far less energy is lost to heat and noise. I think we need to be able to think about multiple things at once. New cars should be electric, but at the same time, we need to significantly reduce car dependency. I guess this is where some of the confusion about Elon Musk comes from, as EV adoption is good for his personal wealth, which combined with his lies made it seem like he cared about the environment. Reducing car dependency, however, is obviously not in his economic interest, and so he works against it.

You all are so effing petty. Just because Musk is deranged politically does not mean he contributes nothing of value as Vaush was trying to argue. Elon started a rocket company that was the first to create reusable rockets and did not go bust. He started a new car company that was a graveyard to fortunes and tesla is thriving. I think part of the reason is Musks direction. Is it so unfathomable to you that some negative personality quirks can help a business? I think one quirk of Musk is he can't stand someone telling him no. He got a minor lock down in CA and fast tracked himself to Austin Texas. What happens when a bunch of engineers he hires to work on reusable rockets says it can't be done or is too difficult? Him being an obsessed dick who can't accept no makes it more likely for him to drive the people working for him to push through. That is a possibility, but again, you all are so petty you cannot allow that.

Partially right. Neither him, an Elon fan (not a simp, we have to hand it to him) nor Vaush, a harsh critic, were as well-informed about SpaceX as I expected. My take is equally speculative, but at least goes a little bit deeper than surface-deep: Elon goaded them into applying, but it *is* truly a very engineering-driven and well-managed company. And run by Gwynne Shotwell. She’s the actual engineer, the adult in the room who runs the show day-to-day. They came for Elon and his promises of space exploration glory, and stayed for Gwynne and her actual delivery of said glory, despite Elon’s shenanigans (with which, sooner or later, they, along with all the poor sods at his other companies, had to contend, but at least they have her, seemingly the only executive Musk respects, as a protective buffer). TL;DR: yes, Elon’s bs served as good PR, but it only kept working by accident, because he hired someone particularly competent and strong-willed enough to keep his general stupidity at bay. Not a very good look for the Muskrat, if you ask me. 🤷♂️

Defending Elon Musk seems so reflexive for some people. Like, it’s not a belief derived from anything substantive, it’s not BECAUSE of anything he’s done or said, they just automatically feel like there must be SOMETHING about him that’s worth defending. In my opinion, it’s rooted in liberal capitalist brain rot. A classic cart-before-horse where Elon’s financial success implies some amount of merit, because otherwise the entire system that we use to measure success is meaningless. And that’s very scary for some people.

It's actually a psychological thing. Called just-world hypothesis. The belief that the world is fair gives a huge amount of security, predictiveness, positivity and feeling of control. If your actions are good (morally/cognitively etc.) you can reap your reward "good things happen to good people", this correlates with the assumption, if you are rich (reaped the rewards) you did something well, in Elon's case he "must be" incredibly smart. Also this is a fix answer for: why does he deserve richness, while "I"m (who thinks this way) not deserving that. He must be an extraordinary, out of the world genius. The just-world belief actually pretty strong, even in daily things, like when you go to an interview, you usually think/hope if you are better qualified, and nice you will surely get that dreamjob. So it gives adaptive pillars how you think about your actions, and you don't have to question everything in every moment. (Will I get the job, with my smile? Or my clothes will be decisive, or should've get a friend in the firm.... etc.) Then a dude got the job with cheating(who you already hate because of this). After that the just-world hypothesis helps you coping and move on. ("What goes around comes around", "Well, in a couple weeks they will find out how unsuitable he is"....) etc. This also a "reasonable" cause why society collectively has a bad opinion of poor people.

Just one example: Vaush introducing his own quick research into the convo, but accidentally coming across info that Teslas are 2.5x safer than the average automobile. He immediately started discrediting the source of his own findings because he didn't like what he found. That never have flown with somebody who knows how to debate or was mildly familiar with the subject they were discussing. We KNOW that Vaush wouldn't have challenged the source if he happened to find that Teslas are twice as dangerous. It's fairly common knowledge that EVs have extremely heavy batteries in the base that gives them a low center of gravity, makes them far less likely to roll, and overall makes them far safer. But this kid had absolutely no push back and Vaush was happy to walk all over him. I would do a hard pass on a place like that because I like spending time with my actual friends and family instead of my work friends.

Elon, "... its really easy. It's like putting a air hockey table in a vacuum. Really not that hard!"

Good conversation, I like that Vaush admitted his bias and limited knowledge from the start and then worked his way up productively. When he's talking to chat he usually just dunks on Musk and makes emerald mine jokes so I see why the guest was a little fearful at first

Yes he is. One only has to listen to his recorded Twitter business call from a couple months back where it's constantly, glaringly obvious he has no idea what he's talking about code/programming wise, and doesn't even know what "business runway" is. And so every relevant question to programming or running the business, he just responds with name calling or indignant sarcasm.

The reprogram the Twitter tech stack from scratch thing was very edifying though .... :). i cant belief that still. Also blue checkmark misunderstanding of verification, HOW on earth would he be able to be a prime contributor to paypal when he doesnt know basic concepts in security. or if being gracious maybe he forgot because he didnt work with it for 15 years or so?

@@DevinMacGregor I THINK so yeah, haven't listened to it since back when it was released, but do remember it was the one where he just started calling a programmer "an asshole" for asking for specifics about what he wanted/meant when he kept saying the "stack is a mess" etc.

This was hardly a debate, this was more along the lines of two bros chilling in the living room after smoking weed while eating pizza and going on about stuff. This was actually kinda nice.

I can guarantee that Elon Musk's popularity DOES NOT extend to the overwhelming majority of the people who work for him.

Ah, but you missed a trick. The popularity when that statement was made was measured by "they've heard of him" rather than "they think highly of him".

@@ericchild3363 in 2018 there was an internal employee poll at tesla where only 58% of employees said they were fairly compensated and 65% of employees trusted him to balance employee welfare with other company interests. having 42% of workers being willing to publicly say that they aren't being paid enough and 35% to say they don't think elon cares about their interests sounds pretty bad to me. Keep in mind that is an internal survey conducted by tesla so people dissatisfied were less likely to list negative response in fear of reprisal. It has only gotten worse after his union busting activity and other hostile actions he took against workers.

Elon Musk is effective at saying a lot of nice sounding words in succession while not actually communicating much. All the while he’s adored by A LOT of people. Elon is one type of person Frank Herbert warned us about in the Dune series. Come to think of it he’d be rolling in his grave at the state of modern American politics

I think that in the early 2000s there's no doubt that Elon made SpaceX what it is, chiefly through his connections, money, and ability to recruit talented employees, some of whom were probably drawn to the company by his public image at the time as a forward-thinking technocrat. Beyond that, is he doing anything that any other executive wouldn't do? Hire people who can make sure operations are efficient, costs are low, etc.? I would seriously doubt that his involvement in day to day operations amounts to much more than basic oversight. His other companies obviously owe much less to him. PayPal was made by someone else. Tesla was made by someone else. Twitter was made by someone else. The work in all of these places are done by someone else. Whatever conservative brain rot he developed in the 2010s has turned him into more of a liability than an asset.

At this point any Tesla owner should know not to trust the auto-pilot feature without reading the manual. What they might not know, is to not transport anything of value in the car because the battery might catch fire and if it does, the car is most certainly going to burn completely. I doubt that’s in the manual.

Bringing this over from the VOD: I think Vaush could have sidestepped the argument about why SpaceX is so successful by pointing out that Elon’s priorities and the priorities of Boeing are different. Boeing wants to get in lots of money on contracts while doing as little work as possible, whereas Elon’s messiah complex means he wants to go to space(while also making lots of money on contracts). They’re not comparable, and it’s certainly not a win in Elon’s category given how that very same belief has led to some of the dumbest things Elon has done. No, I do not have to hand it to Hitler that he stopped testing products on animals because he started using people instead, that’s retarded.
