I was experiencing some low energy and drowsiness with 1.0mg finasteride. So I stop taking it for a month and felt great again. I have recently been taking 0.5mg and even went down to 0.25mg (with help from a pill splitter) and I have found that my hair loss has minimized, and mentally I feel great. Hello doctor, my hair was extremely strong and thick, I lost 2÷3 of my hair, I am trying to remove it. I was 15 years old, I applied gel to the roots of my hair, I washed my hair every day, I did not protect my hair in the sun, I was also depressed, after that period, my hair started to thin and fall out. After 1 year, I was diagnosed with androgetic alpoesia for the first 3 months. I used minoxil, I went to the doctor again because it did not block qma dht, I started finasteride, I have completed 1 year now, the side effects are a decrease in libido, difficulty in speaking, there is a problem in the brain, difficulty in thinking, I have difficulty understanding, this is probably my question to the doctor, which I was worried about before, should I stop finasteride and continue using a low level laser cap? My hair will not fall out again. Can I get rid of the side effects? Also, is a low level laser cap as effective as finasteride? Can it protect my hair? I would appreciate it if you could answer me quickly. I am thinking of quitting the drug. I need to study and cannot work.

I think that we could greatly reduce side effects if doctors would give patients blood tests to check their DHT levels. Blood DHT levels have a decent correlation to scalp DHt levels. I think that people with low levels of dht would be way more likely to have side effects than people who have high levels of DHT. I wanted to get my DHT levels tested in Canada but nurse practitioners are not allowed to include DHT on blood tests. Medical doctors are permitted and might be willing to test DHT levels but the patient might have to pay out of his own pocket in Canada because DHT isn't considered very important. But perhaps people with high testosterone levels likely have high levels of dht, so a testosterone test might be sufficient..

Question to the public: i have been taking 1 mg every day for about 3 - 4 years now. I for sure notice decreases in libido and some ED. My hair has not gotten any worse in that time , and possibly has gotten better. But i personally feel it can cause a bit of depression considering you have little drive to seek out a partner then if you do you have the paranoia of not everything working when the time comes. Has anyone else experienced the same feelings? I dont necessarily want to stop taking it because im single and would like to keep my hair but the double edge sword to this is really a problem. Finasteride depletes neuronal pregnenolone. Low neuronal pregnenolone levels are seen in postpartum depression and MDD. 5AR inhibitors block the synthesis of this corticosteroid. I respect you and your work here doctor but I don't think oral medication is worth the risk of severe depression - which if you're seeking treatment for MPB you'll probably have low self-esteem and mood anyway. Topical is the only thing I would personally trust.

With all due respect, it is going to be very unlikely that encounter “severe” unipolar depression as a side effect of this alone. Most cases of MDD in later life are going to be greatly in due in part to social and psychodynamic factors, or, very commonly actually, due to traumatic life events such as bereavement. MDD ( non-recurrent ) is, after all, an acute episodic disorder ( not the case for recurrent mdd ) with a good chunk of the human population going to experience at least one episode of if throughout their lifetime. Major depressive disorder along with all the mood disorders are very complex conditions and finasteride by itself is not going to cause severe major depressive disorder. It does come off as dramatized on your part. we are not saying it can’t contribute to it, it shows that it can especially in those with a predisposition, but saying you’re going to have “severe” depression because of finasteride, something like MDD with melancholic features, or that it’s going to cause a depression that is going to cause heavy dysfunction comparable to severe presentations of MDD or any other type of unipolar depressive disorder is simply a flat out exaggeration. Remember, MDD has levels of severity, ranging from mild and moderate to severe enough to cause psychotic features.
