There's a few things that really stand out about his stroke. One is that it's very precise, with elbows not too high and hands entering the water at the same angle every time. It makes very little splash above and underneath the surface, as can be seen from the underwater cameras. It's also really efficient, he takes a lot fewer strokes than others alongside him, even in the WR swim. He's got a mild gallop, but really very little rocking side to side. When you look at him from an overhead camera, he seems to be barely moving up and down, and almost purely in the direction parallel to the lane. It definitely stands out. One of the smoothest I've seen.

China is really rising in swimming events. My (Chinese American) friend's twin kids goes to swimming train here, during summer break they had a trip back to China and he signed them up for some professional swimming lessons in China, just for a little over a month, and they both came back champions, both are 8 years old but competing with 12 and under, in 4x50 mix, they beat second place by half a swimming pool, only because they have better backstroke and freestyle. They are going back next summer again to work on breast stroke and butterfly. I was asking what gave them the sudden boost and learned this.

Would also really appreciate an analysis of Zhang Zhanshuo, the 16 yo and his stroke. There's prob enough footage from the recent worlds. He also has a very defined and precise stroke, also quite slow but efficient. Does seem to have a distance background as most young Chinese swimmers start out with. That 4x200 free where he anchored, esp the last 100m with the overhead cameras, shows very little rocking back and forth. His distance technique is superb, although it seems like he's def starting to show more promise for the shorter distances with his relay splits.

In my opinion, his head takes a long time to rotate for the breathe. That is slowing his stroke rate down.
@NNone-cw2bt

@@HoustonflightSimmer I'd agree for the most part. Maybe that has to do with the fact that he's trained as a distance swimmer till this point in his life. I find it interesting that his technique is so drilled into him and he pretty much refuses to up his stroke rate too much in these shorter distances, but at the same time he still could put up relay splits of 48.6 and 1:45.8 because the stroke is efficient. I wonder if he'll shift some focus to the shorter distances for the olympics and come back to distance after this summer, although he is already the fastest 4IMer and 2nd fastest 400freestyler for a 16yo.

@@NNone-cw2bt Zhang Zhansgshuo doesn't seem to have defined events at this time. He swims everything from the 100 free to the 1,500 free and also the 200 IM and 400 IM. He might decide to focus on the 200 free, 200 IM and 400 IM in the future as his core events and swim the 100 free only on relays. I think he may drop the 400 free and up. Swimming is becoming more specialized post phelps.
@NNone-cw2bt

@@lollymanna it seems that he's mostly been swimming distance free and the IMs in international competitions (400-800-1500 free, 2 & 4 IM) and mostly swimming the shorter distance frees on the relays but putting up very good times. I'm not sure he'd move away from the 400 free since he's so fast in that event

@NNone-cw2bt Yeah, I agree. But he has to specialize at some point by cutting down his event load. However, since China doesn't have any other upcoming IM,er. They might want him to get more specialized training in the medley. Just my take. I think another good 400 freestyler will come out of China as it,s just one stroke. Getting a talent in the medley is a lot harder. Especially the 400 IM. I think China will always have freestyle talent going forward. It,s a lot harder to cultivate talent in the medley than freestyle or any single stroke and they may see this as an opportunity with zhang zhanshuo. That,s the reason I think he may eventually settle on the 200 freestyle, 200 IM and 400 IM as is core events.

What makes a car go fast? Two identical cars one carrying more weight, which one goes faster. Two identical cars with identical weights, one has more powerful motor with higher torque, which one goes faster? I can continue this two car example bringing in drag coefficient etc etc. Should not we go back and look at other characteristics rather than just strokes. This guy is 10 cm shorter than Nathan Adrian but 25 kg lighter. Sorry I know nothing about swimming ( straight stroke or bend elbows etc) but I think you have to take other factors into account too. We used to call it multivariate analysis ( these days it has fancy names AI, machine learning!)

Not sure if you noticed a trend - whenever China does something well, media from the west associate negativity to the achievement. When will the west be used to the fact that China can be great and Chinese deserves a pat on the back for their hardwork? To this date, even Sun Yang was not proven dipping. His penalty was laid for his action in distracting the sample collection. Fact is fact. No matter how hard it is for you to take.... With near perfect techniques like Sun and Zhang, why risk dipping? Common sense...
