I always enjoy watching your videos, Luke! Your Spanish has been improving wonderfully. I think it's super important to pick an accent once you get to a certain point in your language journey. In my opinion, it makes learning proper pronunciation a bit easier because you can just focus on producing the same sounds as that accent. Plus it's super fun to develop an accent! 😊

I’m around 280 hours of dreaming Spanish and I understood almost all of what you said. Personally I would start output at around 1300 hours and try to acquire a Spain Spanish accent since I’m from the UK. I’m curious when have you started reading? I know the roadmap recommends to start around 1000 hours but I think I will do it earlier

To be honest I have not read many books in spanish at all, however I probably started trying to read graded readers probably around 600 hours if I had to guess. Reading is still something I need to work on.

You can always learn to speak in a "neutral" accent like they speak in Spanish dubbed shows and movies. They speak very clearly and pronounce every letter. They basically speak with no accent. If you get fluent speaking like this it will be pretty easy to imitate accents as well.

as an Mexican Spanish speaker, I can tell a middle class accent from Mexico City is one of the most neutral accents, easy, clear and definitely understandable in many Spanish speaking countries

Yeah nice, in terms of latin american accents I probably find the mexican accent the easiest to understand, I think it is because I watched a lot of learner content from mexican teachers.

I'm in the UK and hoping to live in Portugal eventually, so it's likely a lot of the Spanish speakers I'll encounter in the real world will be from Spain. I'm working on that accent, but having worked a lot with accents in English (acting and singing) I feel like I could eventually maybe also manage something quite neutral like Colombian as well, just in case 😅

@@Lukelearnsspanish I have no idea! I just figured that once I've learned Spanish, with all its great resources, it'll be much easier to pick up Portuguese 🤣 It's holding true so far, I can understand some already even at 230hrs of Spanish.

Nice update! I still haven’t decided on an accent to pick for Spanish. I will probably choose a Mexican accent because it seems the most practical for when I live (the US) while still having a large amount of content and variety of content creators. I will still watch l content creators from other areas but will eventually try to max my chosen dialect the majority of my consumption at least. Just a note, (from a German learner who has looked into it) German is actually an official language in 3 countries (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) and they are quite a bit different in some ways and not always mutually intelligible, though most people can speak and understand standard Hochdeutsch. Plus that’s saying nothing of regional dialects which in some cases are so different that people from neighboring regions also can’t understand each other without switching to Hochdeutsch according to some videos I watched.

I told my German friends that one of the higher level exams (I think B2?) has a Swiss German listening section and they were shocked and horrified that a learner would be asked to try to understand that when even they, as native speakers, couldn't always manage it 😅

Yep, thanks for the all the info, very interesting stuff and yes I think that makes sense for most US learners to learn the mexican accent, I would 100% be doing the same if I lived in the US.

@Lukelearnsspanish

mmmm, no estoy muy seguro ajá en términos de consejos. Creo que lo mejor que puedes hacer es simplemente seguir el contenido que te gusta, ya que te ayudará a seguir estudiando español, pero también entiendo que la gente quiere elegir un acento que sea beneficioso.

Well done for doing the video in Spanish. Most leaners don’t do that. One thing mate, acento is pronounced asento, or athento if you’re in Spain. C followed by an E is always pronounced as an S or TH.

@@Lukelearnsspanish I should have also said its the same with the letter Z. Spanish doesn’t have a Z sound like English, it’s either and S or a Th. So when you said the word ‘razón’ its pronounced rasón or rathón.
