Cyberman oh no, i didn't say YOU would upgrade, just a hypothetical person (sry i am not a native speaker). But still, the 1600af is a much smarter purchase. Here in Germany, i can get a b450 board for 50€ and 8gb 3200mhz ddr 4 for 40€. So not even 200€ for a full platform upgrade. Granted the 1600af lacks an igpu but then there is the 3200g. And if you are REALLY tight on money, the athlon 3000g is a good choice. So the 6100 is flanked from every side. And you have to buy used aswell.

My pentium g4560 of the same intel generation fared me well for a couple of years, but whenever I upgraded to a used RX 580, I'd regularly be cpu bottlenecked at 1080p, so I often played at 1200-1440p to achieve a better-looking picture at the same framerate. I remember this sort of test with an older DDR3, and even if most games dont mind single channel, some games like GTA for example with the bad streaming engine used, need so much ram speed and it cut the framerates sometimes in half. Im wondering if the newer DDR4 will work better with singlechannel than DDR3 did.

It's crazy to see how far the low end has truly come. Still amazing to think that only just a few short years ago, i3's were not even genuine quad cores. The 4c/8t that was once reserved only for the i7's up until 7th gen, can now be had at the entry level. The 10100F easily beats out an i7-7700k (without OC) and is much more power efficient & easier to cool. And with the new 12100F, people can spend way less to get the performance that was once flagship level, even from only 1-2 years ago. Still, for the used prices I would definitely go for a i5-10400F or something within that range. 6c/12t is the true sweet spot for gaming + light productivity/desktop tasks. I personally still have a Ryzen 5 2600 simply because it's still a very capable CPU. And without anything more than an RX 580 8gb to pair it with, I have no bottlenecking problems for now. Thankfully AM4 is also incredibly versatile & I will be able to use my same B450 board for a 5600x once I actually need to upgrade.

Heh, someone has a 6700K on Gumtree here for AUD$330. That sort of money will buy you a brand new Ryzen 5 3600 which will run rings around it. The problem, I suspect, is that people don’t fully understand price/performance depreciation over time and think that, because it’s an i7 that they paid $400+ for brand new, it’s worth a larger fraction of that now than it really is. You see the same thing with GPUs. There’s plenty of 1080/1080 Tis going for 2-3 times more than they’re worth because the sellers overpaid for them during the mining boom. No, your 1080 isn’t worth more than a 2070 Super because you were dumb/impatient enough to buy one while everyone was mining. Thing is, there’s always going to be people willing to pay that money, so who’s the bigger fool?

It's got a higher refresh rate than your standard 60hz 1080p panels; 75hz. Higher refresh rate displays are also ideal because the frames your computer generates are perceived more efficiently, as more frames can be displayed and then interpreted by you. Some of your very well known professionals would use 640x480 240hz CRTs before 144hz and 240hz LED Panels became a little more affordable. CS:GO has a very niche method for mastery.

A shame you didn't have it on the benchmarks this time haha, however as always this was a lot of fun to watch! You very often review old budget hardware that I used to have :)
@TheGloriousLeader

I recently came across an as-is bundle for $10 that included a motherboard and an i3 6100. The CPU Socket had been damaged when the cooler was dropped on the pins during installation(don't ask me how). Anyways, after soldering 5 new pins on, and bending back about 15 more under a scope, I got the cpu to run just dandy. I'm going to be pairing it with 16GB of ram that I had laying around, an old RX460 and a 240GB ssd to give to my older brother to play Age of Empires 2 Definitive with me. He doesn't really play anything else, and it passed the ranked benchmark(8 players, approx 1600 units) without issues. If you come across a deal for less than $30 it's good, but in today's market where a Ryzen 5 1600(or even 2600) are going for under $100, it's not worth it.

RSCOZZY The problem with those early i7s isn’t so much the CPUs, but rather the mobo platform. X58/P55/H57/H55 didn’t support SATA6 and USB3 natively (some boards had 3rd party chips that offered the support, but most were hot garbage) which limits performance even when the CPUs are still good. This is why Sandy and Ivy Bridge hung on (and continue to hang on for a lot of people) for so long: it combines all the CPU performance a lot of people need with a motherboard platform that doesn’t feel as antiquated as its age would suggest.

I thought about buying this processor back when it came out to replace my FX 6300 system which was way beyond past its prime what with it being paired with a Radeon HD 6970. I was waiting for the price to drop a bit more before biting the bullet but that never happened. By the time I amassed enough money for a better spec'd build the second gen Ryzen 5 processors were quite affordable.

G'day Random, just wondering if we can get a comparison video with the Athlon 3000G RX5700XT, as you did the Ryzen Athlon testing using the IGP, these i3-6100 CPUs are still $120AUD second hand here in Australia, also a used H110 M/B is about $80-100AUD considering the i3-6100 uses DDR4 you can get a New R3 3200G for $155AUD or Athlon 3000G for $80AUD with an A320 M/B starting at $85AUD if you are really tight on budget & using the IGP, also we now have the R5 1600AF available in shops at $150AUD if you already have or can afford a bit more money for a GPU.

Used Intel mainstream processors (4th, 6th, 7th) is ridiculously expensive. For example i7 4790 is sold at the same price of the R5 2600 here in Egypt. That's why I sold my i5 4690 and got R5 3600 instead of going to i7 cpu and since AM4 still has an upgrade path and it wasn't that much expensive to upgrade to different and way better platform.

I have a system with an i5 2400. I got it for $17.50 ($18.55 if you include tax). My system I'm typing this on now seems to be a way better bang for the buck than the 6100. It is a quad core as opposed to this dual core, so being stuck on Sandy Bridge isn't a big deal. This 6100 barely outscored my 2400 in Cinebench. I get a 931 in Cinebench. This really isn't a good deal at that price if I'm being perfectly honest. I really don't understand how they're going for so much when my old 2400 is pretty much just as good for a fraction of the price. The extra cores might even come in handy on this thing in some programs as opposed to being limited to hyperthreading. If I could overclock my 2400, it probably would've beaten it in Cinebench too. I guess Skylake just carries a tax with it that Sandy Bridge doesn't

egykilenckilenchet egykilenckilenchet I wasn’t really saying that it’s a better chip. I was saying it’s a better value. There is honestly no value in something like a 6100. It may have better single core performance with the better architecture and better RAM support, but I don’t see that as being worth 4 times the price when your gains will be negligible in basically everything except single core performance and may still be a bit worse in some cases. RAM is only a small part of the equation. Most people care mostly about raw power, not power efficiency or heat. Sure, the 2400 is a 95 watt chip, but it somehow runs quiet in my old Dell with the stock cooler. I would only recommend a 6100 if you either need Skylake for whatever reason or need better power efficiency. But honestly some new chips are probably just about as fast if not faster and cost about the same and are likely just as efficient or maybe even more efficient.
@weatheronthe8s895
4 жыл бұрын
egykilenckilenchet yeah. For free, there is nothing wrong with the i3. It’s an ok chip. But I certainly wouldn’t spend my money on it. I got the 2400 because I had a Sandy Bridge system already and I wanted to upgrade to a quad core from the old i3 2130 that was in it for dirt cheap. I haven’t noticed much of a difference in my systems on DDR4 as opposed to DDR3 for day to day stuff. In fact, my 2400 system sometimes feels faster than my main system I guess because of Windows 7 being better optimized on SATA drives. If I was going to spend my money though on anything from scratch, I would spend like $15 extra and get a Ryzen 1600 AF (6 cores and 12 threads) and it comes with the cooler unlike most of the used 6100s you find. Plus a new motherboard for that is similarly priced to a used Skylake board.

Well - back in 2016 I got myself a Pentium G4400 "to be replaced soon". Watching the prices of the "better" processors of the Skylakes I deided it was cheaper and more future proof to get the Ryzen 5 3600X + a X570 board than to put in a better processor on my Z170 board. So yeah: For my old computer this i3 6100 would still be an upgrade but now it's only my backup and "TV computer" so it doesn't really matter anymore. The G4400 with its integrated HD 510 is strong enough for watching BluRays and 1080p KZitem and browsing the web.
