We finally retired our 2006 120 series V6 4.0 (6-speed manual) in Feb at 562,000km. I bought this vehicle from my employer at the end of the 3 yr novated lease, it was my company car equipped to mine spec and used all day every day in northern W.A. I did over 100,000km between the mines in that period, then it was my wife’s car for 15 years, averaging ~30,000km p.a., cross-country outback kilometres with approx half of that on unsealed dirt roads. We used the vehicle for extensive continent-wide travel on our 6 week holidays, towing a camper with all the fruit. The lubricant & filter service intervals were halved from new (every 5,000km) and stuck to religiously. The suspension was replaced every two years, it had 3 clutch replacements, several complete brake overhauls and I lost count of the number of new windscreens on the insurance. Full cooling system overhaul every 100k with a new water pump, tensioner, belt. I added a rear locker and twin motor air compressor in 2009 which was bloody awesome. The ONLY original factory component that failed in all that time was the alternator at ~420k, primarily because we pushed it a bit too hard on two auxiliary AGM batteries run through a Redarc charge controller. Luckily it failed slowly so the battery light would come on intermittently - replaced before it became a proper problem. Re-gassed the aircon a couple of times. We hit roos, wallabies, and a Suzuki Swift…. We drove through the worst sand, Tassie bog holes, High Country rock hill climbs, everything we threw at that truck it handled with ease. Eventually the corrugations started to take their toll and there was that much bulldust through the vehicle that we decided it needed to be completely stripped and rebuilt. But the main reason we retired the car was because I retired from the mine and consequently lost the spouse fuel card benefit that was part of my package! Because if there’s one thing about the old V6 truck, it sure likes a drink… when we drove across the Nullarbor with the camper into a strong headwind we would typically see 25L/100km! Okay that was at a steady 110km/h, but still… The average fuel consumption over the life of the vehicle was 16L/100km. The vehicle is parked up in Denmark waiting for strip down & restoration by my eldest son at some point soon enough. It’s a bloody tough truck and it will be interesting to see what he does with it.

Isn’t Denmark LHD ? I owned the 120 series 2.7 liter 4 cylinder year 2005 bought in 2013 but got robbed because it consumed oil. Yet by regularly adding oil, I made it survive till I sold it last year in 2023. Still running with clean interior and consuming oil though. It’s a tough vehicle, never had any problems except for adding oil. I bought the 150 series few months back 2013 Model with the same 2.7 VVTi engine and its bigger body makes the vehicle under powered with that engine. But otherwise it’s good.

2004 120 series Prado with 210,000km. 4l V6 with 4speed. Incredible off-road capability So so so so comfortable on and off-road. Built quality is out of this world. Interior is so well put together and while basic, has everything you would ever need for long trips. Seriously strong reliability, I know people with over 400,000km in same spec. I've had little things here and there but mainly attributed to off-road. Have taken it plenty of places in NSW, SA, NT and QLD including Lake Eyre, Simpson Desert, Oodnadatta Track, Flinders. Did I forget to say reliable? Honestly the most reliable car I've owned period! Handles like a boat Fuel economy is pretty bad, lol! Average about 17l/100km Soft brakes You're welcome to use it to review if you like. We are seeing the 120 series popularity really increase recently. I cannot wait to do long trips for fishing etc in this when i get it. I'm 6'3 getting older and was after something that can do everything, go away for a weekend with the kids +partner, throw all my fishing gear in the back and go out for an afternoon or throw mountain bikes in the back and go for a shred. Hello. Thanks for all your incredible good reviews. In my opinion the Prado has the same problem with rust as other body on frame vehicles, and the first thing to do while buying a new one is to have the best anti rust protection before you start using the LC at all, and do regulary maintenance with some softer oilprotecting keeping the protection soft and pliable without any pockets under the treatment where the frame could start rusting. This is the only weak point and the most easy one to fix, and think of the somewhat costly first protection as a part of the cost of the new vehicle. When I sold my 6,5 years old LC I got the price I asked for and the vehicle was sold and paid 2 days after the announcement just because of the protected frame and other critical places. Very easy maintenance. Best Regards from Arne G in Norway

"If it can survive Australia, it can survive anywhere". True, especially in Africa. You'll never see one broken down on the side of the road or in the desert. As an aside, this generation of Prado is split into three "sub-generations",for lack of a better word: 2009-2012, first facelift from 2013-2017, and the second facelift from 2018-2022. I've got a 2007 Prado Grande 4L Petrol and a 2004 3.8L Pajero Exceed on petrol and LPG. These are both top spec cars for the time. The Prado is much quieter, smoother and has better fuel economy (around 12l/100kms on a trip and around 15L/100 around town) than the Pajero but the Pajero being on LPG is much cheaper to run (Pajero around 15L/100 on petrol and 17L/100 LPG on a trip and 20L/100 petrol around town and 25+ on LPG). What I like about the Prado is the console cooler box and the rear air suspension and the smooth quiet ride. What I don't like is the peeling pearl white paint.... not happy Toyota. The Pajero paint is excellent apart from normal wear and tear and stone chips.

WARNING VERY LONG COMMENT They are never in getting repaired because they don't do high-end 4x4ing, mostly because the majority of them (I will be referring to the 2009-present models for this part) are driven by Mums who need the extra space for the kids and their stuff, and use it as a daily for picking up and dropping the kids off at school and for doing the daily shopping/errand run. While also being perfect for a family outing. That is the role of the Prado, and it does it very well. If thats all the sort of driving it does, thats when the Toyota reliability shines through for 90% Prados. Families will sometimes feel a bit adventurous and might go for a drive along a beach or maybe explore an old lite 4x4 road/track. Thats fine, the Prado can handle that easy. However, you will sometimes see older Prados on tougher tracks with little more than a simple lift and offroad tires. I have a friend who has an older Prado(pre 2009) and he swears by it. He says, it's a very underrated 4x4 and is very capable. I have told people I prefer older cars for that very reason. They tend to almost always be tougher, stronger and more capable than more modern 4x4s. I'm fine with people wanting a nice driving experience, thereby they get a more modern car. But if you want a car that is reliable and capable off-road, I would pick an older car everytime. I want to go on a 4x4 trip with that friend to see for myself the capabilities of his old Prado. Me personally, I love the Patrols, the glorious rough old brick that is the GQ Patrol/Ford Maverick (which is also my pride and joy), and the more comfy, streamlined and family friendly GU Patrol. And for the Landcruisers, I would go with the 70, 80 and 105 series everytime. The GU and the 105 series being the more comfy cars to drive. In my opinion, if you want a decent and fairly comfy car for the family, but is also able to take on the wild tracks, I would 100% recommend the GU Patrol. If you are a Toyota person instead, I would say the 105 series. For those who don't know, I specifically picked the 105 series for a reason. Thats because the 105 series has another model, that is the 100 series. The vast majority call both of them the 100 series for simplicity, but there is a difference. The 105 series has the old-school solid front axle system, but the 100 series introduced the IFS system, and in my opinion, the solid axle is better for 4x4ing. When it comes to 4x4ing, I will always take the strength and reliability of a solid axle over the increased clearance and better ride performance of an IFS. IFS might give you more traction and better on-road performance, and also have a higher clearance because they lack the big solid axle under the car. But despite those pros, in my opinion IFS will never be as reliable as a solid axle, thats because IFS is more prone to failure in harsh conditions and they are also harder and more complicated to work on when something does go wrong, and don't forget the fact you are practically limited to a 2" maximum lift. You can go higher, but you will need to spend more than its worth to make extreme modifications to the IFS to allow it to go higher. Whereas when lifting a solid axle, there are no major modifications required. The most you will need are a few replacement parts to suit the lift you are applying. For an example, when going for a 2" lift, in most cases you don't have to do anything, but to be safe it is recommended to replace the caster arm bushes with caster correction (offset)bushes (I had offset bushes installed when I did my 2" lift), even though it is not mandatory, the car will handle better with the correction bushes. If you go higher, instead of making complicated and major modifications like an IFS, all you need to do is swap out a few things like the caster arms, swaybar links and panhard rod, and install direct replacements that suit the lift you are going for, parts like the panhard rod and swaybar links will usually be adjustable. In some vehicles you may need to make sure the tailshaft doesn't bind on anything like a crossmember, but in most cases it's a pretty easy fix for a mechanic. I believe that IFS do not belong on 4x4s, especially when said 4x4 vehicles are already known for their extreme 4x4 capabilities, example, the Landcruiser and Patrol. (In terms of 4x4 capabilities)Thats why I'm not fond of the 200 series-present Landcruisers or the Y62 Patrol. Don't get me wrong, they are very nice and comfortable cars, they are amazing in that respect, but in my mind, they were supposed to be the next generation of extremely capable, tough and reliable off-road explorers for their model, that give you the confidence to try new challenges and go where cars were never meant to go, while also keeping up with the times in terms of looks and on board tech and features. How I see it, in terms of 4x4 capability, Toyota and Nissan have downgraded the Landcruiser and Patrol down to an SUV type of car, where they are more suited for on-road performance and comfort, essentially making them a true and expensive luxury SUV. For those reasons, I am disappointed with Toyota. They already had the comfy family SUV, the Prado. They should have just made a luxury model, making this one the expensive extra top of the range model with all the trims, accessories and features with an extra bit of bling. Instead, they put IFS in the Landcruisers, gave them extra accessories, features and tech as well as a bunch of bling on top. They essentially just making a new SUV model thats a bit bigger and more luxurious than the other models and slapped a Landcruiser badge on. Last I checked, Landcruisers are supposed to be capable 4x4 vehicles, not luxury SUVs. They should have left the Landcruisers with the solid axle, continued to improve the engines, appearance and interior features and tech. Making the Landcruiser, a very comfy and up-to-date family car, that I would consider a proper 4x4. I am disappointed in Nissan as well, because they could have done the same thing. They could've taken one of their current SUVs like the X-trail, and give it an expensive luxury version, that had extra accessories, features and more bling than the other models. Instead of making the Y62 just a slightly bigger and more luxurious SUV and calling it a Patrol. Patrols a known for being one of the toughest and reliable 4x4s, not a luxurious SUV. The GU Patrol was lucky, in that it had an extremely long production life in Australia. While IFS was being introduced with the 100 series Landcruiser and then fully implemented in the 200 series, all that time, the GU was still competing. It may not have been able to keep up in terms of interior comfort, tech and features when compared to the new Landcruisers, it remained one of the top dominant 4x4s you could buy brand new, all the way until 2016. It lived long enough to be sold alongside its successor the Y62. No Landcruiser wagon has been able to beat the GU for staying on the market the longest. The only exception is the 75 series ute, that has surpassed all Landcruisers and Patrols in that respect. The newer Landcruisers and the Y62 had more power, comfort, tech and features, despite that, the GU remained having the highest off-road capabilities and potential (by being the easiest to mod for tougher conditions), over the other brand new Landcruisers and Y62. So I am clear, I love IFS cars, they feel way better on the road than a solid axle. But I think they should only be in vehicles designed to be road cars, like the common sedan and hatchback, the sports cars, and the utes like the Ford Falcon and Holden Comadore utes. This also includes actual luxury cars like Mercedes, that were actually made to be luxurious, with advanced tech, extra features when compared to other cars and higher levels of comfort. This is what Toyota and Nissan tried to turn the Landcruiser and Patrol into, just a bigger version. IFS should also be in, to a degree, the 4x4 utes, that are similar in nature to the worker's Hilux. When it comes to these 4x4 utes, there should be an option for IFS or a solid axle. I would pick IFS if it is going to be used solely as work ute, where most of the work is in and around town, or even long distance hauling, generally if they drive mostly on public roads. But if it is going to be doing heavy work in rough conditions like out on a big farm, or for the National Parks, where some tracks can get pretty gnarly, or even if you prefer a ute over a wagon for your 4x4ing adventures, I would pick a solid front axle over IFS. Sorry for the long ramble, I went way off topic. Bottom line is, the Prados are great family SUVs that last near forever if not mistreated. If you want to go 4x4 I prefer and recommend a solid axle 4x4 over an IFS. If you read the whole thing, I am flattered. But let me know what your thoughts are to my oversized mess of a comment.

Injector seals leaking and injectors failing on the 3 litre, both of which can often lead to catastrophic engine failure. DPF dramas and airbox dusting woes on the 2.8, which Toyota like to pretend doesn't happen. Oh what a feeling! The older 3 litre is a good motor, if you have some preventative maintenance carried out on the injectors to remove the risk of problems.

@@Uberkreig Morning mate. When we went over how many Prado are sold vs how many have this issue, we wouldn't regard it as a "common" problem. Yes it happens but the mechanics and technicians we spoke to and reports we read show that while potentially catastrophic for the unfortunate few, the vast majority of Prado have either had any issues resolved under warranty or haven't experienced any issues at all. If this is different for where you are located please let us know as we do focus on Australian Prado models.

@@danbywaters6123 Hi Dan, really appreciate you watching and commenting. We're not concerned about Toyota bullying us at all but when we did the research we found that the issues raised on forums were generally sorted during servicing and under warranty. Also, as we just mentioned to Uberkreig, when we looked at how many Prado are sold vs the amount of problems and issues reported, we wouldn't regard some of these issues as "common". We recognise the Prado isn't perfect by any means, and unfortunately there are the few owners that have experienced catastrophic failures, but the vast majority of Prado out there run faultlessly. Also, we gather our information primarily from the Australian market but if you're not based here in Australia and know of issues in your country that would be regarded as common, please let us know so we can add them to our cheat sheets when they become international. @@ReDriven thanks for the reply AK. Love your videos, they are very informative. Keep them coming! The Prado and the Hilux pretty much use identical engines, hence the issues that they can (and do) suffer are exactly the same. In your other vids, you and Jim have covered off on injector seal issues, and DPF problems on the Hilux. These are issues that you also have to be aware of on the Prado too (same engine, same problems). As for the injector seal issues on the 3 litre 1KD motor, I was under the impression that Toyota in New Zealand recalled all of these motors to replace the seals fix the issue? If that is the case, it's a shame the Toyota here in Aus didn't do the same, and chose instead to let peoples engines self destruct. 😕 As for the DPF issues on the later Prados and Hiluxes, as you mentioned in other videos, Toyota are going to warrant the DPF for 10 years (after being forced by a class action). After the 10 year mark, owning one of these affected vehicles may be a big risk, money wise....

Great car for family duties, camping adventures, with some off-road driving thrown in. Nothing else out there (apart from more expensive 200 series) that offers balance of reliability, service network, off-road chops, and comfort/ practicality. Engine wise: a well look after 3.0 1kd especially around the 2012-2015 mark is the best if you don’t want deal DPF issues or potential issues; avoid the first gen 1GD 2.8 between 2016 and early 2020 for lack of power and all the first gen issues including the DPF class action issues;; second gen 1gd from late 2020 onwards more powerful and hopefully all the other first gen issues resolved; I skip vehicles which has been chipped and or done a lot of towing heavy caravan like over 2 tonns- the little engine has already been tuned by Toyota to extract maximum reliable power - if you want your Prado to do more than 300,000km, skip those - tow a big rig, get a landcrusier for the job

Prodo's are the better purchase especially over the LC200 with their astronomical price tags, Prado's especially the ones with the spare wheels on the back from factory, also have from factor a long range tank.
