right? it let me go through my "Straight phase" in the sims 2 as a teen myself, before going to a straight phase in real life !!!!! like marrying a woman and having kids !!!! in the sims 2 we were in the 2000s and it was still a different times, I had to make all my sim a straight version of myself because I didnt accept myself even if I was super feminine, finally in 2010 it all changed and we all accepted more who we were, so it was meaningless to be closeted, and probably if I had the mindset of the 2000s or 90s as an adult myself, I would've lived as a closeted straight man !!!!! not only I wanted my sims to be straight in the sims 2, my mindset in the 2000s was to approach a straight lifestyle even if I wasnt, I thought I would graduate high school and college and marry a woman and have kids like my sims in the sims 2 !!!!! id like to think that game made me live that closeted life all I wanted, as I played with that sims 2 family for almost the whole 2000s decade !!!!!

It seems to me the Sims had it right in earlier games where they just let sexuality develop with relationships. Now every Sim is set up to be asexual and bi at the same time. I have to go and ‘fix’ each Sims sexuality due to this ‘feature’. It’s really annoying and makes gameplay less organic. Thanks for approaching this issue with reason and common sense. I also get annoyed by this comment by EA about how you shouldn’t be able to fix it, bc you can’t do that in real life. Guess what, IT’S A GAME. That’s why we are playing it! I don’t have big mansion in real life, nor can I contact aliens or be a vampire. And I do want my sim to get together with that hot pre-made sim no matter what ea thinks about it. Honestly, sometimes they are just so full of themselves.

there's an option in game to change it to how it used to be, with all sims being up for anything so you can choose as you play what their attractions are. also, you can be bi an asexual at the same time! asexual refers to sexual attraction, not romantic. some people are both asexual AND aromantic, but there are plenty of asexuals of all romantic attractions. :D

My first gay experience was because of the Sims. So way back, when Clare Siobhan's dream house series was just starting, she made a Lesbian couple and my sister was kinda horrified and bewildlered (Don't worry, She's an absolute ally now. I mean she beat up my homophobic bully when she found out I had one and I literary never saw the bully again) and I was confused why she was surprised, then for the whole night I was thinking about it and it went from "Why is it weird?" To "Ah F*ck, Do I like boys?". Then I left that thought for like an year until It came back and I realized I really really liked Zuko and Sokka from ATLA and I just accepted that I like boys more, and honestly I didn't know the word "Gay" until 2020, I didn't know Homophobia was a thing until I looked up that word and I didn't know it was illegal* in my country until then. A few of the lads in my Class figured out I was gay before I DID!!! So no, the Sims didn't turn me gay, it introduced the concept to me and then I figured it out on my own :D And now I create myself in the Sims and create a love story I can't have 😅

Before this video I hadn't really thought how much my identity affects my gameplay. I usually prefer to start with a female sim and they usually get into same sex relationships. That is probably not a coincidence. I'm glad sims team is inclusive so I can experiment to my heart's content. Maybe I should make more male sims and go outside of my comfort zone more when playing.

In high school, I was the shy nerdy outcast, though really I was a serious bookworm. So I hung out with other "outcasts", those that didn't fit with the "in" crowd. This was the gay people, the goths, the not so trendy nerds, and so on. Also being a reader, I was more open to many different kinds of people. Maybe its because I read books on werewolves, vampires, witches, fae, and lots of medieval/historical settings, so I was open to the different kinds of people around me. I talked to them like I talked to everyone else and so they talked to me. This was the late 80's and by the end of the 90's the common theme was to treat everyone the same. Which at the time we thought was going well. Not sure how that changed but that's really off topic. So in my Sims games, I have characters of all nationalities and all sexualities, because that's who my friends are. Fun story, my longest best friend ever, came over one day while I was playing sims... 3 I think ... and he saw two men kissing in my game and was so shocked. I was like yeah thats so and so and they are married and contemplating having a kid and blah blah blah. After that he totally paid attention to my game whereas before the sims was just something I did that he could overlook. Six months later, he has a get together and he's telling his friends that don't know me how in my game I have everybody and everything, including lesbian vampires, and aliens, and how my gay couple now has two children, and the werewolf pack, and so on. Next thing I know, I'm getting emails from his friends how to get a hold of the sims games and which expansions do I recommend and how to get started and blah blah blah. Anyway, I guess the whole point is that they like me felt accepted by the game, that there was space for them with sims. LOL, it was a gay recovering drug addict that introduced ME to sims in 2001!

Queer people, especially older queer people, grew up in a world that often rejected them and told them they have no value. The Right are still separating us from the idea of family, like we just sprung out of the earth. I’d say it’s in line with people feeling like they have to strongly identify with a specific group or ideology. Most obvious example is politics where everyone online is expected to know 1,000+ different ideologies and pick one that is very specific and niche. Since people feel like they have to choose a label for their sexuality, they usually go with something extremely specific to avoid any misunderstandings. I feel like it’s fine as long as they don’t demand everyone to know every single niche sexuality that exists. I’m a man and I like men, so I just say I’m gay. That’s fine for me but might not be for others.
@Tiny_Koi

I get that it can be confusing but that is just what humans are, confusing and complex. To be honest most people with micro labels don't really even tell people about them unless it's related to the conversation or topic.For example I am asexual, I have other aspects of my lack of sexuality that can be explained further but in most settings where my lack of sexuality is brought up I only need to say one thing. You don't have to know all these micro labels or even understand them, just be kind to others. 👍

@mortal-enemy
Жыл бұрын
I've been out since 2006 and the label ditching phase was such a brief blip in the history of the community. I think it's okay to personally not feel a strong love for labels for yourself, or a strong affinity with labels, but a lot of the microlabels and smaller, highly specific labels that exist and are more common now are often held by young queer people who are trying to identify who they are. It's absolutely okay for them to experience queer joy with a lot of words attached, even while you and I may experience queer joy with less words attached, or less emotional emphasis on said words. It doesn't greatly affect us if someone flies 16 different flags, or identifies with a label we haven't heard of before. You could certainly argue that it somehow delegitimises us as a community to straight people, and I would agree that straight acceptance of us as normal people is important, however I don't think straight people's opinions of us should ever be prioritised over our own opinions of ourselves - which is really what the labels assist a lot of people with, their opinions of themselves. We also just don't exist to appease straight people, and I don't think anyone should make themselves smaller to be more palatable to hypothetical strangers. It's overall harmless, just as it's absolutely harmless for you to possibly not identify with any labels or few labels. If you were interested in more on this topic, I'd highly recommend a video Strange Aeons published the other day about Tumblr and the MOGAI movement - it should be her most recent video on her channel. Also Happy Pride! ❤

@@mortal-enemy I agree with you that I only remember a very brief moment of label ditching around when you said, and also in the 90s. Hearing this makes me feel pretty lucky in some ways. Growing up the closest family friends were a gay couple so I never questioned it. As life has gone on I appear to have attracted people of different genders and sexualities. On multiple occasions people have come out to me before anyone else. I suppose that I felt like a good choice because even before I came out myself I certainly didn't act my gender nor was I ever fased by sexualities. That asside it wasn't the sims that made me realise myself but it is certainly nice to have that representation.

I think if I had ever heard the term ace before my mid 30s, I may have had a very different, and much happier life. Finding out that I wasn't broken, and that there were other people like me, and it really is ok, literally changed and saved my life. I spent decades trying to force myself to do things I didn't want to do, because that was 'normal', and expected of you, and sexual culture is shoved at us from every angle 24/7. Clearly, I was broken. There was something wrong with me at a core level, and I just had to keep on 'fake it till you make it' and it was devastating to me. I know you don't like all the labels, but if someone can find out they aren't broken, there are others like them, YOU CAN ACTUALLY BE LOVED BY SOMEONE, I hope they can find it early enough in their lives to make a difference.

Absolutely. Of course there is not asexual phobia like you see with the rest of the LGBTQ+ community but mainstream media literally just does not talk about it. the world is heteronormative obviously but, it is also so common for sex to be a big part of culture weather it is sex appeal/sex positive culture or sex taboo/sex shaming culture. But everyone assumes sex is something that everyone thinks about and either embraces or rejects based on a number of factors. Meanwhile a majority of people don't even know it's even an option to just like actually not give a f*ck about it😂. Knowing that asexuality existed would have also been helpful to me growing up since, even though I now identify as demi, I experienced nothing akin to typical sexual attraction and it was a very isolating feeling like I was on the outside looking in. Glad you found out and it helped you. Representation for all!

In terms of real life… it’s actually quite possible to have those gender options. Intersex people exist, and also it’s totally possible for a trans man to have metoidioplasty (a type of bottom surgery allowing standing to pee and essentially giving a micropenis) without closing the vaginal opening. And even on testosterone, it’s entirely possible for an FtM who still has reproductive organs intact to become pregnant at any point in time. Just so some people know these cool options! :D All these gender combinations are in fact possibilities IRL.

Thank you for this video! Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I too have noticed the polar shift regarding labelling oneself and others. Although I understand the importance and need to define one's own identity, as well as the human compulsion to catergorize and simplify, putting ourself and others into boxes feels more like an act of separation than a celebration of diversity (at least to me). Extremely rarely would I describe myself as a gay man, I'm just a guy that's attracted to other guys. I don't hide it, I'm not ashamed of it, but I have no desire to spotlight, elevate or celebrate this singular aspect of my being either. I am what I am, it doesn't make me special. Despite living close to London, I've never had many gay friends (currently zero) and never felt drawn to the "gay community" either physically or culturally. Although I could be seen as the "token gay" among my circles of friends, I know they don't consider me as such, and of equal importance, neither do I. My hope is that one day humanity will celebrate their similarities rather than their differences, and understand that unity requires inclusion, not division. Have a good day ❤

Excellent comment! The trend towards having a collection of labels has been really confusing to me. I first came out as bi when I was 12, now I'm 32 or 33 and I feel more confused than I ever have. But that is around what to say to other people when I'm questioned about it, without that I can just bumble along and if I'm attracted to this person or that, I can deal with the situation as it arises. No sense of need or desire to proclaim sexual preferences of any kind to someone I'm not wanting to sleep with. I've never felt akin to the lgbt+ community and tbh sometimes it bothers me people or organisations from that community speak in a way that suggests they're speaking on behalf of anyone who isn't just straight.

LGBTQIA+ pride should be remembered as a form of a protest there is still a lot of discrimination. It is a weird type of protest because we do it in happiness. I think multiple different labels helps us understand ourselves more and communicate it better with others. Eg a box with wheels, you find out it’s called a car, you then find out the type of car, then the brand, and make and model, and colour. For me I learnt a lot about myself and having words to describe myself better allowed that journey. I originally define myself as straight. and then I learned about bisexuality and then I learned about romantic attraction for myself homo romantic, and then I learnt about sapiosexual. So for me that journey is important and my full label of bisexual, homo romantic, sapiosexual. Communicates a lot more about my experience of the world. Compared to that until I was in my 20 and started to learn. And I was in an environment where I could learn.

The gender options has been a wonderful and safe way for me to explore parts of myself that I was never allowed to when I was younger because of my upbringing, and if there's anything I'll thank TS4 for, it's that. It's very refreshing to me to not have to think about whether I should create a certain sim or not, because no one in the sims world will care. And that makes me happy. I'm allowed to make my male sim with a female frame, or the opposite, and no one can tell me that it's not allowed. I still find myself going "oh but what if-" and then stop because if I want to, then why shouldn't I? I still don't know shit about myself, really, I always say that I'm just here bing, but sims has helped me work through a lot of trauma and become comfortable with myself.

That’s basically what tons of mainstream books and movies and music is about - being attracted to the opposite sex for the first time, which is realizing you are straight
@PickledJone

I think gaming in general actually turned me straight(er?). So enviromental influence does have a play, and biological and social factors influencing each other. I personally don't like labeling myself - I am just... me. I remember when I was younger and I'd be attracted to my female classmates and I thought I was a lesbian, so I called myself that. But as I got more into gaming, around when I was entering puberty, I found the male characters way more attractive and in return, I started liking men more irl as well. So I thought I was bi. But as time went on, I started to feel little to no attraction to women, esp nowadays, and I've completely given up on the labels. And now, years later, I'm playing the sims, and I found that I do prefer playing with male sims better and because I have so little females in my town, I just pair up the guys together. I find myself way more drawn into seeing two male sims do romantic interactions, maybe I just like seeing hot dudes on my screen lol. But weirdly, I kinda see myself more in a male sim rather than a female one, even if I based it to look and behave like irl me. But I am not trans/nb, because I do like being a female and would honestly jump off a cliff if I ever was a man. I do enjoy seeing female and male sims interacting that way but my gaze is mostly on the male one and on the female only if I find it incredibly attractive, which is rare. But I feel nothing when I see 2 female sims interact that way and that's why I basically have no lesbian couples in my town. I guess the enviroment made me a bit confused rather than making me realise stuff lol

I'm the same exact way! I always create the more "idealized* version of myself, but it's of the opposite sex. Sounds weird because I have no desire to transition or anything like that, but I just find myself always self-inserting but as the opposite sex and have them get into a same-sex relationship. Idk why, I just find it cute.

LGBTQIA+ people don’t celebrate being simply different. the entire point of pride is celebrating the fact that we’re here, queer, and *not going anywhere.* people seem to get this twisted a lot and i can only assume they haven’t read up on much queer history. satch literally says in the video that being surrounded by straight people constantly has made him feel isolated at times… because community is important. its quite literally part of humanity, itself. humans are social creatures by nature and being around people *like yourself* assists in feelings of adequacy and boosts esteem. straight people get this by default because they make up the majority of people, so to say queer people asking for a month to remember and celebrate their history is too much to ask for,,, is ridiculous. again i understand the intentions in this video are good and i’m not trying to start anything. just stating my viewpoint considering half of the US congress, among other governments (partially and fully,) is trying to pass laws that restrict gender affirming care and unofficially claiming queer people are predators again. just this week a pride flag was set on fire in front of someone’s home in my city. straight people are not going to look out for you, they never have in the past and will give you and your community up in an instant if it buys them another day. queer people have to stand together, always, or we really have nothing.

the Sims did help me to find my bi identity and that's still something that means a lot to me. i might not be so open about it that i put flags on all my stuff but i'm not exactly cowering in the closet either. knowing that part of my identity helps me to see myself in a more complete way, much like recognising that i'm American, Muslim, that i have Filipino, Italian and German ancestry, that i'm autistic and that i'm a woman are all important parts of my identity. knowing these things about myself make it easier to live an authentic and fulfilling life because it allows a connection to communities of people who also know some of my struggles. that's why i appreciate the fact that queer liberation didn't just decide they were done at LGB. as disappointed as it is to see a gay white man use transphobic dog whistles, it's not surprising. a lot of white and white passing people will cling to a marginalized identity as a way of undermining the struggles of people with more marginalised identities than themselves because it's easier to live in society as the model minority than have to risk relationships with people we care about to stand up for what's right. you're still young so i really hope that you can move past this as you mature. you may not have the backs of your trans comrades but Marsha P. Johnson had yours, and trans activists of today still do as well.

I think the big step gay and female characters have to take is ironically getting rid of the diversity label. While the straight man can be a coward facing his fears or a cocky dude that gets humbled and improves, the woman is #strong and independent, nothing else, completely replaceable w a cutout of schwarzenegger and the gay character is always gonna be the background character that kisses someone, that can be easily cut out in some countries until he stops being advertised and thought of as such. Develop the character with the development of a straight man, then flip somethings, make him a woman or make his gf a dude, then go from there with the rest of the changes, and advertise it without mentioning any of it as being the central point, boom, you get a new iconic character. it's been done before, with examples like alien, where ripley was never specified as a woman in the script.

The Sims was one of the things that made me realize that I was aromantic asexual. The Sims 3 had the Unflirty trait. While I mostly made "straight" Sims, I made a Simself and gave her that trait and the way she reacted to other Sims flirting with her mirrored a lot of my own experiences. I'd always been beaten over the head that I HAD to like someone like "that", male, female or otherwise, that not liking anyone at all was "not normal", so I performed a lot of compulsory heterosexuality as a youngster. It helped me realize that what I felt was normal and I'm not broken or anything.

Queer culture and having labels and more labels are for necessary for political needs and advocacy. Especially, as a lot of making minorities being "normal" is just making them do the same thing as the majority which isn't the goal for everyone. You can't just say we're equal and expect the world to reflect that, the who point of recognizing those identities in inequitable treatment and history and so you have to have to different treatments to kinda make up for that. That's the mindset between equity not equality.

Well, if a sim can get pregnant it means they have ovaries, not specifically a vagina. If they can pee standing it might means that they had bottom surgery of some kind. I admit, a bit confusing. This is a really well made video. I'm honestly suprised Sims 2 didn't have the same options of two same gendered sims getting together like how Sims 3 does. Which makes me glad that I grew up with the Sims 3 since I felt free to do whatever. I remember early on I'd strictly make Sims straight which to me felt boring and repetitive. Some moments I'll catch my sims flirting with the same gender (Btw, yes I did to the traditional mom, dad, older sister, younger brother) and I would just accept it. The Sims definitely didn't _make_ me anything, but the free will to do anything gave me the mindset that it was normal. If anything, I found it weird that people find same-sex relationships weird as a kid xD The earliest straight memory I have was when I'd hire a baby sitter (Female) and tried to get a male sim to romance her. Assumed the babysitter was a teen like my male sim was (she wasn't). The earliest gay memory I have was when I was actually trying to create a story with the characters (adding personalities and why they are like that) and ended up with a sim who fell in love with their best friend (who happens to be the same gender). Or that one time I made one of my sims fall in love with an alien xD.

Recently, I had a similar experience but not with sexuality, but more so with neurodivergency. I have ADHD and suspect ASD. For the later, I won't be getting an official diagnosis as the cons outweigh the pros at this point in my life. But it was brought up to me by a few people. That aside, I would always play in the same way. I never played stories or things like that. I always just made a family, had a baby, and then got bored. I hyperfixated on the cas function (and still do) because the aesthetic of people. Within the last year, I learned that people played out stories and got invested in these little stories which blew me away because I just could never wrap my head around how you get invested in it. Being a psychology and neuro student, I had this realization later on of "oh shit. it's because i never understood imaginative play like that." It common for kids with asd to play in a more utilitarian fashion, hence why lining up toys or organizing toys is a common sign of asd. I was playing the sims in a utilitarian way - make sims, get married, have baby. Because growing up, that's why you're told is normal. I'm sort of reteaching myself how to play imaginatively as well : ).

Well, The Sims didn't awake my sexuality when I was playing for the first time at age of 12 (Disney did though, ironically 😂). But I was always mixing things up as much as game let me. Still all stuff in TS4 is a little weird to me, the pronouns aren't working in my language so my game has funny empty gaps in messages. At least I can do whatever I want. I remember being veru excited for TS3 when it was announced - because promised more options for gameplay. Man, where arebthese times where I could be excited for the sims game 😢 Unfortunately gay marriage I will see only on this game as it's not an option in my country - so for me it's nore likely on the same level as first sims game 😂 I had hints of my actual sexuality from age of 7, but full realisation hit me when I was 23 (took my way to long...) and I started to caring more for what I actually feel and not what others want me to feel. I'm bisexual, meanwhile, everyone I'm attracted to is literally opposite to me so I'm staying forever alone 😅 awkward. Thanks nature!
