Apologies if someone else has mentioned this but probably one of the closest could be the very last years of Group C. The Jaguar XJR14, Peugeot 905 (and the Supercopter variant), the un-raced Mercedes C292 were all the final generations of those regulations. Huge downforce, with an endurance spec F1 style engine. I know only the Peugeot raced at Le Mans (the Jaguar did practice and came back as a Mazda in’92) but those cars if I remember were fast enough for top six on the F1 Spa grid at the time (for example). Unfortunately there are no AC mods of these cars available or the ones that do exist are not very good quality. Fun video though. Yes the 2016 cars were the pinnacle of LMP1-h. The limiting factor is the regulations of course. Take that away and we had the 919 Celebration car, and we know how fast that thing was. Lol.

Not a very accurate comparison, the 917 was at least 50 mph faster than the fastest GP car which was the Ferrari, it would have covered the 3.7 mile long straight about 12-15 secs faster, and the 1st chicane and Porsche curves hadn't been added yet so that's an even larger advantage for the sports car. Aside from any F1 car from pre-1966 regulation changes (as mentioned in another comment), i think 2014 *might* have been the only point in F1 history where the field might be slower than Le Mans cars. When the hybrid regulations first hit the cars were so unbelievably slow they were barely faster than F2 (one of the backmarkers set a laptime slower than the F2 pole in season opener. Though if we go by just how slow the backmarker is, then we can just look at the entirity of late 70s to 90s where we got many unserious backmarkers setting qualifying times that are 10 seconds to minutes behind pole even in short tracks). From 2015 onwards it did got better, as we can see the 2016 car here is able to beat a TS050. But the drop in speed from 2013 to 2014 is so big it actually made F1 lose a huge amount of fans (as if the switch from V8 to V6 hybrid wasn't enough). This is also why we got the regulation change in 2017 which re allowed F1 cars to hit breakneck speeds with insane aero after years of getting held back (arguably since 2009). So pairing a 2014 LMP1 (Porsche/Audi) against a 2014 F1 (Mercedes) can give us interesting results
@kamilborowski2064

Hey guys! All the data is on the internet. Let's look at Silverstone from 2014 season for example: WEC pole time: 1.42.7 (dry track) F1 pole time: 1.35.7 (damp, although started to dry out a bit, drivers used slicks) F1 fastest lap of the race: 1.37.1 (dry) The track layouts were the same. You can also look at results from other circuits of that season: Spa, Austin, Sakhir and Interlagos, which were common for both series. Even on the shortest circuit (Interlagos), F1 pole time was still 7 seconds quicker that the one from WEC. So, although 2014 F1 generation was one of the slowest in the last 9 years, the comparison with 2014 LMP1 is still devastating for the latter.

While fun, I'm not sure how much sense it makes to compare race cars that were build for very different purposes. Endurance racing is as much about speed as it's about reliability. Most F1 cars back in the day wouldn't even last a race, much less 24h, it's just a different breed. Guess what I'm trying to say is that "le Mans cars have no chance" isn't as clear as the video might suggest. Up until the mid 60es, Le Mans cars were faster on average, it wasn't until F1 started to adopt bigger engines and better aerodynamics which gives them superiour power to waight ratio and corner speed. That's what gives them an edge over most over race series. Even in the video it's not as clear cut. The Can Am 917 gives you an idea what the 917 was capable of if it was trimmed towards shorter races, and it beat the F1 cars. The Nissan would won the 1990s race if the AI wasn't dumb, and the LMP1s were very close, they are absolutely compeatable with the right trim.

There are a number of issues with the comparisons here. The single biggest is not using truly period-correct track configurations. Not only were there no chicanes on the Mulsanne in 1967 or '70, but there were no Porsche Curves, either. There also was no Dunlop Chicane. There was no Dunlop Esse in '67, '70, or '90 as well. Furthermore, Mulsanne Corner was slower and tighter, with a straighter approach in 1967 and '70, while in '90, Tertre Rouge was still notably slower and tighter than it is today. In 1967, there was no Ford Chicane, and still in '70, it was just the single chicane there right before the pits. The Dunlop Chicane was reconfigured after 1990, too, making it more favorable to cars with better cornering. The lack of accounting for all of those benefits the F1 cars, which weigh much less. Additionally, those aren't the fastest cars from 1967, or the fastest car at Le Mans in '70. You were running the GT40 Mk.I by the looks of it; the Mk.IV, which was the top contender from that contingent in 1967, was on average at least 6 seconds faster than the 330 P4, and the Chaparral 2F was pretty similar on outright pace to the Ford Mk.IV. As for 1970, on the average, the 917Ks would have seemingly also been several seconds off of the pace that the 917Ls could do. And I'm not sure that the Pole-sitting 917L even had Porsche's best driver lineup overall at the controls. Regarding Group C/GTP, even just from 1990-92 or '93, what the cars were capable of improved by multiple seconds a lap, even on shorter circuits, let alone Le Mans. And at the tracks where both CART Indy Cars and IMSA GTPs ran in 1992, the GTPs were faster in Qualifying. In terms of real life, in that 2014-16 window, the Fastest Lap in 2015 was a 3:17.475 set by the Audi R18. The Fastest Lap in 2019 was a 3:17.297 set by the Toyota TS050. Of course, the modern Pole record is a 3:14.791 from 2017, also set by the Toyota. In 1967, Fastest Lap, which was faster than Pole, was a 3:23.600, tied for by 2 of the Ford Mk.IVs. Both the Ford Mk.IV and Chaparral 2F, depending on the source, had 520-560 hp. The Mk. IV was capable of 220 mph, with the 2F more in the 205-mph range, but the Chaparral was more nimble, as evidenced by its overall win at Brands Hatch that year. The actual figures for 1970 are a 3:21.050 Fastest Lap and 3:19.800 Pole. Come 1971, these came down to a 3:18.400 Fast Lap and 3:13.900 for Pole. For Group C, from 1990 to '92 or '93, both Polae and Fastest Lap improved by 12-13 seconds, so either a 3:40.03 to a 3:27.47 or a 3:33.060 to a 3:21.209. (The Nissan that turned a 3:27.020 in 1990 only did so due to a significant mechanical malfunction.) Actually, the 917/30 was geared for acceleration, not top-end speed. The fastest I saw there was 392 km/h, and a 917L did 396 km/h in testing in 1971. Where the 917 turbo kills the competition is in its 2.1-sec 0-60 time, its 3.9-sec 0-100 time, and is 13.4-sec 0-200 mph time. But it's geared to only get to 240 mph. Optimize it for top-end, it could probably leave the WM Peugeots behind, able to exceed their mark of 254 mph. The AI Nissan should have been closer to a 3:30 if it hadn't gone off at Mulsanne. And given the 1971 Pole time in a standard, non-turbo Porsche 917L, the 917/30 should be capable of being easily under a 3:12 in reality, certainly under a 3:10, actually. And the 917L should be at least on par with the Lotus, even in race trim. Honestly, in most years, it doesn't appear that there was such a huge gulf between Race trim and Qualifying setup in Sportscars. In the old days, it wasn't actually so uncommon for a Fast Lap in the Race to be even a tad quicker than Pole. And back then, race pace was more dictated by needing to preserve the car, and therefore not pushing its limits most of the time. In Group C, during the races, drivers had to hold back significantly in order not to run out of fuel before the designated distance; it had little to do with the setup or what the car was truly capable of on pace. And at Le Mans, you wouldn't have many clear laps at the front until you hit traffic.

Hmmm think there is something wrong with your R18. Probably running too much downforce. In Le Mans race configuration it can easily run 3'11 - 3'12. With a nice Q setup it can drop about 10 more seconds to 3'01. Its top speed should be around 347-353km/h at the speed traps on the straights. It gets to top speed slower than the TS050, but at the top end it's much faster, especially with a slipstream pull. Also - you can't simply drop in Group C and not have in it the Sauber C9. It's like mentioning Group B and leaving behind the Audi Quattro.

when you compared group c to f1 the turbo f1 cars would've been a much better match, people don't realise how insanely fast the early 3.5 na cars were, if you didn't notice the 1990 ferrari was only 4 seconds slower than the 2016 ferrari

In this Video are so many false information: Valteri Bottas broke the F1 speed rekord at Baku not in monza and by the group c comparision is no chichane the good option because at that era of le mans was also no chichane in the mulsanne straight .
@fabulouscarcharts5467

Hi, you are true the top speed was in Baku. I guess "so many false information" refer to that one mistake. However, the chicanes were introduced in 1990. Hence some group C cars were concerned by the new hunaudières layout.

@@fabulouscarcharts5467 The 378 km/h top speed was proven to be false and a telemetry glitch. The real top speed of an F1 car was 370km/h however that was in Mexico

You should not compare at le mans circuit. The Le Mans cars are designed mostly for this racetrack and F1 cars are not. So if you compare it, choose racetrack that was using by both or was not using by both. It's more fair if you just wanna know which is faster.
