The funny thing is, Trapping is allowed a lot more on Little Cup than in higher tiers. The power level of the trappers such as Diglett are signficantly lower, but still good. Stuff like Gothita was busted because it could set up Calm Minds, heal up with Rest, and then sweep teams. Diglett has never been banned because its defenses are too paper to be too reliable overall, despite its fantastic offensive presence. Trapinch was banned in Gen 7 LC because it enabled Vullaby too much. Its funny how it all checks out.

One strategy related to trapping that frequently goes unreported in the grand scheme of things (because it's more niche) is Perish Trap (and the variants, you don't need to use a trapping move + Perish Song exactly, Whirlpool + Nature's Madness Fini or Block + Salt Cure Garganacl should be included as well) It's way more committal in terms of moveset and it is less versatile in which teams it fit (it's either a Stall's surprise tool in dismantling offense or the most hardcore of Anti Stall tactics, literally no in between) so you don't see it as often, but the rewards are still huge and it's not rare at all to see a game be won (especially in tournament) because the opposing Azu ended up being a Sap Sipper Perish Trap set which took the opponent by surprise and dismantled their team

@@disasterarea9341Theres plenty of fliers in the tier such as Gengar, Salamence, CB Aero, Zapdos, Skarmory and Charizard who exploits Dugtrio after a kill. Free attacks, free layers of spikes or free dragon dance set-up. Most of these Pokemon also helps in countering Jirachi and Celebi both of which aren't really that overpowered especially because they still lose to Blissey even if Arena Trap gets removed. I think if Arena Trap does get removed, Blissey would rise up in usage which only furthers hurt Celebi and Jirachi or forces them to run a Blissey-beating set which still doesn't help them beat other mons like Metagross or Tyranitar who is also checked and is aided by Dugtrio by beating Bulky Waters such as Sui and Swampert who themselves pair up with Dugtrio to beat wallbreakers. The pattern here is that everything in Gen 3 is paired with Dugtrio unlike newer gens where Dugtrio only really fits in one specific playstyle with Gen 4 pairing it with Clefable, Gen 5 used to kill Weather setters, Gen 6 and 7 paired with Mega Sableye. In Gen 3, none of the Pokemon Dugtrio enables really runs rampant because Dugtrio itself is exploitable and even if one counter is gone, its likely there would be another Pokemon to counter it such as DD Tyranitar still being able to lose to CB Aero at +1 which is something Dugtrio cannot trap and the fact that it exists also means some mons wont become rampant in of itself such as the aforementioned Tyraniar and Metagross from being too comfortable such as when the bulky Water is dead. Dugtrio feels more like a glue mon if anything in gen 3 than a facilitator of Heatran/Jirachi/Tyranitar removal.

The core of it is that switching itself (not switch moves specifically) is ludicrously powerful in Singles, which warps the meta around the very few mechanics that punish or counter it (stealth rock, pursuit, and trapping), and even around the counters to those counters. @@internetguy7319 It's less about outright "punishing" switches, and more about the guarantee of hitting the target that's currently out. Gholdengo, for example, can switch in on moves like close combat and rapid spin, potentially require the opponent to switch into a counter, and then switch out with very little risk. Even if the opponent predicts this and double-switches their spinner back in, Gholdengo can just switch back in on the spin, rinse and repeat. If pursuit were still around, then the interaction becomes a lot more interesting since a spinner could either forfeit their rapid spin attempt by switching into their pursuit user (taking hazard damage and risking their opponent staying in and denting the pursuit user, not to mention leaving the hazards up until the next opportunity,) or spinning in the hopes that gholdengo doesn't just... switch in to block it, and then switch out before the pursuit user can get in.

I feel like the "broken" nature of trapping is very much context-dependent. For example, Magnet Pull has only really been a "problem" in gen 5 due to the strength of dragons at the time, with steels being the only thing the team really "needs" to trap anyways. Aside from that, Magnet Pull is generally fine balance-wise both due to how specific it is, as well as how important Steel is defensively, and by extension, how much you should expect anti-steel tools in general (as opposed to, say, a water- or fire-type equivalent, which would be much more matchup fish-y and less reasonable to expect for any given game.) Conversely, Dugtrio isn't overbearing in gen 3 both due to how the meta incentivizes ground-immune pokemon, and the relatively low power level of the meta. In fact, I'd say that the fact that Arena Trap Diglett was too much for gen 5 further proves the point that it's less about the pokemon itself and more about the meta that it's in, and unfortunately (or fortunately,) it doesn't look like there will be another meta where arena trap doesn't cause problems anytime soon. Pursuit is probably the single most well-balanced form of "trapping" in the game, and it's not really all that close. Sure, it might feel overpowered when compared to things like partial trapping moves, but when also compared to trapping *abilities,* its balance becomes much more apparent. First off, you have to actually click "pursuit" when you think the opponent will try to switch. Not earthquake, not sucker punch, not crunch, *pursuit.* If you guess wrong and click pursuit when the don't switch, you're hitting them with a 40BP attack while they're probably using something more powerful, and if you click something else when they *do* switch out, you miss the chance to trap them entirely. Additionally, pursuit doesn't actually *prevent* switches, it simply adds a sort of "health cost" to switching out. If you can afford to pay the cost (such as if your pokemon resists dark and is weak to the trapper's coverage, such as bisharp vs ttar's superpower,) then you can still switch out, accepting the possibility of chip damage rather than risk losing a pokemon.
@DrCoeloCephalo

In the competitive format of the monster collector Yo-Kai Watch 2, there was a Yo-Kai called Nosirs with a Skill that prevented the opponent from rotating their monster party. You could potentially lock your opponent into a bad and disadvantageous front row super easily. They removed that skill in Yo-Kai Watch 3 and designed the battle system to make switching far more of a commitment with Wait Time. They also introduced Soultimates that could swap your opponent's back and front rows and the monsters would be forced to respect their Wait Time after the swap. The drawback and cost is that you have to build around something like that for it to be consistent in a fast paced 3v3 format. In Pokemon, the slower paced 1v1 format makes building around trappers far less of a commitment. The trapper just needs to be out against something it beats or can turn into setup fodder and you win. That's why Shadow Tag Encore Wobbuffet (while one of my personal favorite sets of all) is incredibly dumb and low-commitment because you can so easily put your opponent in a disadvantage for very little cost.

i think preventing or punishing switches in some way is a good thing so games dont drag on forever, because otherwise switching is extremely advantageous, granted, preventing ALL switching is bad for the game, but to some extent, hazards, trapping, and switching moves help make "just switch into your check" not always as riskless, hope that makes sense!

To an extent I can agree but when it comes to aspects like rocks I think that it takes the idea and pushes it to an extreme that hazards never should been in like look at adv you can run a spikeless team with no remover and while it can hamper some mons like ttar and swamp but you also have mons who ignore it beicase with sr most of the game is defined by the mons who can get it up and remove it and the mons that abuse it beicase hazards are smithing that should do chip damage not 50 percent So I would say if they are gonna do complex bans on abilities that help make ot so you can remove rockers I’d say ban rocks they are in my eyes the most unhealthy part of any Pokémon meta game

I'm really torn in a bunch of different ways about trapping. Magnezone is really fun sometimes when the stuff it's enabling isn't overwhelming to deal with , and I really liked how it shifted in gen 8 after losing hidden power, but there were multiple points where corvinight was the only thing holding the tier together and sorry, you just got trapped. Pursuit I have the strong stance that it was a good influence when including pursuit had some real opportunity cost. Yes ghosts are broken without it, but that has a similar energy to "we can't ban genescect, it's keeping Latios in check", just deal with the broken ghosts if that's necessary. When pursuit is too easy to fit in, it kinda made multiple types of pokemon just horrible as a side effect of a measured effort to hurt checks to already strong things. When it has some opportunity cost, it generally feels like an interesting choice to make, like in gen 7, where Tar is pretty niche and to effectively run pursuit you have to fit one or 2 sets that can be really powerful but are also limited.
@emmetstanevich2121

At the end of the day, I feel like the removal of pursuit is still unfortunate because, well, the community was never given a chance to determine if it would shape the meta in a negative way. I know that sounds like the same complaint people scream about many broken things that got banned, but the main difference is the fact that most banned things are banned after the meta has had a chance to see if it can be "adapted" to, and come to the conclusion that it either can't be answered (evasion,) or requires you to go out of your way to do so (baton pass.) There's also the fact that Smogon has never removed something outright, with the exception of gen 1's glitch pokemon (barring MissingNo.,) glitch moves, and various desyncs. Smogon's rules and bans are only really enforced on their ladders, events, etc., and I think that's what makes me entirely fine with the prospect of things getting banned. As much as I think evasion has no place in competitive pokemon, I don't think I'd really want to see it deleted from the game itself. Sure, it would quiet the people who say "it's in the game, so it shouldn't be restricted or questioned in any capacity ever," but I can see the value it serves for the game's singleplayer design, and it would be a shame to remove the option for everyone when simply banning it from ranked play achieves the same result with far less collateral.

No reason for arena trap or shadow tag to have their wide coverage of trapping while not having any requirements to pull off. I think trapping needs to be either more limited or need some set up. i would say that trapping can make teambuilding (for offense in particular) a little more trivial. when you don't have the option of trapping it forces you to be a bit more thoughtful with your building - you can't just trap x to sweep with y, so you have to find some other way - explode on it, or run offensive pokemon together that can wear down their checks together, or use hazards (usually some combination of the 3 depending on the meta). i think in the abstract removing trapping makes the game more interesting, so long as the metagame without trapping isn't itself broken

Trapping is broken because the power level of the game has reached a point where it makes more of a difference than it should _and_ switching has become more integral than ever to game balance. You can't have *good* Trapping in a game where it takes one choice pick to destabilize an entire team and lets yours run rampant or lacks a solid 'come back' mechanic, let alone a Pokemon being a _recurring_ Trapping menace if its tough enough to last or have team support out the wazoo to enable it's Trapping shenanigans. Bad Trapping, on the other hand, like Bind-like Moves or Mean Look, are so slow and vulnerable as to be non-impactful and ultimately meaningless to exist. There has to be a balance somewhere in Trapping design for it to be effective without it becoming a strangle hold on team building, but the closest thing to it (Pursuit) has been removed, so clearly we're still a ways off from it.

I feel like a single move that does both perish song and mean look could be quite balanced if it also locks the pokemon using it in(and that pokemon doesn’t get a switching move) and the mean look effect stops if the pokemon that used it faints, would be a decent unique move that can trap anything but requires the trapper to stay alive until the last turn of perish song. I personally think that if a generation bans trapping abilities, they should ban magnet pull as well. Just because the targets of magnet pull are much less limited than shadow tag or arena trap doesn't change the fact that it removes the option of switching out. Smogon has practically said 'switching is a fundamental part of competitive pokemon' in their arena trap ban thread in gen eight so why in the seven hells they didn't ban magnet pull either. I don't care if magnet pull is limited or Magnezone is shit otherwise. Be thorough and consistent with your policies For me, I don't think pursuit counts as trapping because unlike the three abilities, it doesn't trap like at all. You can always just switch out unlike the trapping abilities which literally take the option away and forces you to stay in. All it does is make switching out a bad idea so it doesn't really bother me

I think trapping specific types is much easier to play around. The hard part is how good steel type is. I think magnet pull is helpful in keeping one of the strongest types in check. In my opinion, pursuit was too effective in too many scenarios. It is much easier to have a pursuit user than play around a pursuit user. It removed a lot of pokemon “accidentally.” You may prepare for a Latias because it’s a major meta-game threat, but now ALL pursuit weak pokemon are worse. Steel, however, is a type you will see a ton anyway because it’s so strong. Also the limited capabilities of the trapper pokemon itself can’t counter ALL steel pokemon. It’s a much more narrow pool. To me, the later gens issue with magnet pull is more of a power creep effect. There are even MORE threats to be enabled by trapping.
