I totally agree with you. I have had problems with the OWC Thunderbay Minis SSDs. And the customer service has been less than helpful for fixing their problems. They blame it on Apple updates. I want everybody to be aware before buying OWC products.

I'm so happy to have found this post. Thank you for redoing the video 20 times. I have the same OWC SSD Enclosure, with my original 500GB MacBook Pro SSD and same thing happens. Files just don't stick or name gets copied with zero bytes. I have lost so many files that were copied onto the drive, confirmed, ejected properly, only to find months later they are gone grrr!!! I also bought an OWC 1TB M.2 SSD for my MacBook Pro, after installing a fresh MacOS the very first reboot failed - OMG!. Thankfully after it recovered from that it's been good for the last two years. It is slower than my original SSD. At the same time I also bought the Thunderbolt 2 docking station. It's a very expensive nice looking box of crap. Ethernet fails regularly, Mini Display Ports are unrelaiable and the FireWire 800 port on the device just does not work constantly at all. Tech support are not willing to help and so I have battled with workarounds for the last few years. Basically it's a very expensive ($400) USB hub and that's all it is good for.

For any one who are still looking for an answer - I found one (after chatting with WOC support!) • This enclosure is not compatible with any NVME SSD! • It is only compatible with Apple AHCI Blade SSDs from most Mac laptops from 2013 - ~2017 Please checkout the following link from OWC: eshop.macsales.com/Service/Knowledgebase/Article/26/788/Envoy-Pro-PCIe-Apple-SSD-Compatibility >>> Hope that this will help anyone looking for an explanation about this issue

I've had the same issue. I dumped the OWC SSD for the original 512GB Apple one and bought a new Apple MBP. I contacted support several times with no real answer and after numerous reloads of the OS nothing was accomplished. The sleeping problem solution was to disable hibernation, and eventually the battery will die (say over a weekend). Honestly, I'll likely never buy an OWC product again due to this. I've seen other reports like this as well and due to the support I got, I'm done with OWC.

Thank you for the video. I have the same issues. Tried two different drives. Seems like writing does not work. When I had a working drive, I was able to boot from it using Envoy Pro. BUT after I formatted it, I coundn't write anything without errors.

I guess I consider myself fortunate that the Envoy enclosure for me just didn't work at all, plugged it into my Mac Air and the system didn't even register anything, nothing there. Fortunately, I'm a devout user of Carbon Copy Cloner and have several backups on external Toshiba disks, and just used one of those copies to clone the new OWC Aura Pro X SSD I'd installed internally. Unfortunately, the OWC SSD turned out to be hardware crap and ended up having a week from Hell dealing with kernel panics, and file system corruptions, and infinite reboot cycling. Finally gave up with diagnostics and repair and sent it back to OWC. Original Apple SSD back in the machine and all is fine, no issues whatsoever, the system is rock stable again. Pathetic.

OWC drives and enclosures are rubbish. I had exactly the same issues as you plus more. I ended up resolving that I could use the external SSD/Enclosure as an external bootable MacOS instance - and only for that purpose - Well that works despite the trickery required to get that far...but watch what happens if you ever try and update the OS! Also, OWC support (if you’d call them that) are absolute clowns. They are far from smart, lack any language power and are downright rude at times.

I just purchased 1TB Aura SSD ProX2 for my MacPro 2013. Had some problems in visualizing it using the CMD+R option. Then I just: made a backup with time machine in one of my external drives, made a bootable thumbdrive with Mojave (I am resisting to update to Catalina and BigSur), installed the SSD in place following instructions, then boot using just the OPTION key and voilá, formatted the OWC SSD with disk utility, and proceeded with installing Mojave in the new OWC SSD. Now I am transferring the backup from time machine, which will take a while! Let's see if I have the some troubles you had!

@@status101-danielho6 I am writing this from my MacPro. It is all OK! It took several hours, not just 15', as I my backup included my dropbox, which is an external drive, but nevertheless, I wanted everything the same way I left it. Time machine took 8 hours to backup. And setting up the Aura about 12 hours, because of the back up. But I am really happy. I actually upgraded also the RAM memory to 64 GB. So far, so good!

Trying to help a friend out with this same upgrade, put his Apple SSD in there, never shows up on any computer. Hard to migrate data if you can't put the new SSD in there (even though it comes from the same company you just bought this enclosure from), and the old SSD doesn't work (even though it is an Apple factory SDS). Thankfully at least it didn't ruin his SSD or corrupt it. I expected better from OWC, clearly QC has gone away.

I also can NOT!!! recommend the OWC SSD Upgrade kit with the Envoy Pro. Do NOT BUY this overpriced crap! I have also very bad experiences with it! The OWC SSD(the 480GB version) is slow, sucks battery live and gets to hot. The internal Apple SSD will not show up mounted in the envoy case!

I have exactly the same problems - looks like there some kind of caching done by the controller in the enclosure and no matter what i do it loses the last operations. Like if i'm copying the file to it - big, 15tb files - the last one got damaged. If i copy small file - the file system shows it and i can even open it, but after ejecting and reconnecting the drive file is gone. If i create a folder and move file locally there - again, after reconnect there is no folder and files are in the same spot. Definitely a controller problem in the enclosure.

Yes I have one (envoy pro) and it does the same thing, I also had a generic branded adaptor ( apple ssd -> usb3 bridge ) and it also started doing the same thing. I agree it appears to be a caching error of some sort i am not sure what triggers it or if these enclosures are just useless. I need to be able to read client ssds (apple) so i can also plug them into a pci card in my mac pro tower. that works 100% I also have a clients mac pro 2013 here that is doing the random shut down thing and i dont know why. It had a 2tb owc ssd but that tested ok and the computer is still misbehaving with an original ssd installed .... may be a motherboard fault. Also I agree that OWC support sucks .
@AronBezzina

The random shutdown could be caused by a dead GPU. That was an issue mine suffered from at one point. The inbuilt hardware test said everything was fine but when I took it to Apple and they ran their Apple diagnostic tool it found a problem with one of the gpu. If u look on torrent sites u can find the network boot image / live CD for the Apple hardware tests for theses older macs.

@@AronBezzinaIn my case I am pretty sure its the ram /riser board ie the logic board not the graphics. I have ordered another one, as i already tried swapping the processor but that did not fix the problem. This model has twin d300 and does not appear to have any graphics problems. The problems are related to ram, slot 1 is not recognised at all and it does random restarts ...

Just remember if u go ahead with this method of using an adapter, to install macOS on the new NVME ssd u cannot use internet recovery and must boot from a bootable USB having macOS high sierra or higher
