Tarihi Cihangir Simit Fırını, located in the center of Istanbul
This famous store is loved by locals and tourists alike for its wide selection of sweet bread, meal bread, and cookies, including "Simit," which is a national favorite in Turkey.
Opened in 1920, the shop has a long history and has been interviewed many times by the foreign media from Azerbaijan, Italy, and other countries.
In this video, I went behind the scenes of their work and also interviewed the master who is in charge of bread production and heard about the hardships he faced as an apprentice.
Why Turkey?
1. Turkey is the world's largest bread consumer
The annual bread consumption per capita was recognized as a Guinness World Record in 2000 with 199.6 kg per capita per year.
2. Turkey is considered to be one of the birthplaces of bread.
The ancient Mesopotamian civilization gave birth to bread. Southeastern Turkey is part of that civilization.
