As the owner of a horse who has to wear the dreaded red ribbon wherever we go, I commend you for handling all this so well. It really is a pain in the butt when riders ignore the warning and walk their horses into my guy's butt then get their horse kicked at. As for her insisting to go in front, that's just plain stupid. Horses who kick stay in the back, even I know that.

@@Tara101 I have a sincere question: is the Ribbon system an English riding/British thing? Or is it just something I didn't know about, maybe something that was developed in the last decade or so? Maybe that's a dumb question, IDK, but I live in the US, and I'm not a rider. My husband was a rider here, but that was 20 years ago, and he rode thoroughbreds. And they didn't use that system. So neither of us knew about it. So I'm just curious if it's not used over here, or if it is, and we're simply not familiar with it. Sorry for the ramble, lol.

Isn't this an endurance competition? How else are you supposed to get points other than the vetenary checkup at the end of it? And if not competitive; how are these riders and their red tail horses supposed to improve for competitive ones? Even if red tail ribbons started as the very last competitors at the starting line; there'd still be red ribbons passing into the earlier starters. It'd be best if there was a seperate competition day for those with red tails entirely with this point of view; which means more money, time and effort on the part of the hired staff and volunteers.

Farouk was very well behaved but, one thing no one seems to have said, is that the dogs were reasonably well behaved too. My mare is a big hipped quarter mare, she’s kicked two horses and broke legs before I got her. She was known to kick people. I tied a red ribbon in her tail a few times and folks commented on the pretty ribbon this old guy tied in her tail… in not so pretty fashion, but hey, it was secure… I finally got a wide white cotton ribbon and in red marker wrote “ I KICK “ its full length, both sides. That one worked. My mare is sweet now tho. mindful. I crawl all over and under her and shes a statue. On the rare occasion she does pin at the boys, you call her name and she quits. Good old gal. Regarding red ribbons - here in Texas, USA, I encountered a young girl and her mom riding ponies down my dirt road. The girl's pony had a red ribbon around its tail, so I said in greeting it was a cute little kicker! They were surprised and said it doesn't kick - why did I think so? Because of the red ribbon in the tail - that's what it means. It's a warning to other riders. They had no idea. They'd just thought it was a decoration! OTOH, in some Asian countries the ribbon is there for a different reason. Japan has a pure white TB racehorse actively racing. To them, white is the color of mourning. So to break up the white, they put a red ribbon on white animals - cats, dogs, horses. That is a happy wedding color. This white filly even races with the red ribbon on.

Over many years I have had horses come to me labelled as 'kickers'. There might be many reasons for them behaving this way, it is an extremely dangerous behaviour and they need to be trained out of it. This can be done with consistent training. I had a mare and foal in the stable, both were eating their hard feed. Foal was stood with his body across the door. I could see from his look at me that he was going to warn me off when I went to enter the stable. I was carrying a skip and pitchfork, I continued towards him and sure enough he lifted a back leg to kick out at me. All I did was to poke him with the fork handle as he went to boot me. He jumped as if he had an electric shock. I removed the droppings and allowed him to continue eating. I returned with a bucket of water, this time he politely moved to give me room to enter. He never kicked out at a human again.

There was one time my cousin just pulled the reigns on her pony out of no where. My horse was trotting behind and I stopped him just to the right them, her pony was angled just so that she kicked me in the foot. I don't actually blame the pony, she didn't deserve half of the stupidity my cousin put on her. I stopped going with them after she borrowed my riding crop (used to signal my mare who listened better to the light tapping on her behind than a kick) and proceeded to break it over the pony's face.

Remember the song,”People, People Who Need People, Are the Luckiest People In the World”? So,that was an extra lovely ride for some but I was getting people sick, a term my granddaughter coined when she wanted to end shopping and go home. What a champ Farouk has turned into, I can’t even recall the last time you told him now that was silly wasn’t it?🥰🤠💕

What a pleasant ride. Great weather, lovely scenery, and some history along the way. It looks like there are lots of people enjoying the trails with you. Farouk has developed into a marvelous trail horse - no worry about meeting lots of people, ladies with drinks in them passing them up to Mum, dogs barking, lots of horses to pass or who want to pass, bridges, mud, gates to open, etc. I hope the girl on the horse with the red bow lets you pass and stay ahead so you don't have to contend with the possibility of a kick. Other than that, it's been perfect. Thanks for letting us tag along!

Good morning Tara! What a beautiful ride. Farouk was EXCELLENT with all of the congestion of dogs, people, barking dogs and other horses. Well done Farouk!! What a clever clever boy! Tara, he is growing leaps and bounds under your tutelage! Well done Tara. Well done. What a wonderful equestrian/trainer you are. You are outstanding! The red tailed horse bothered me because it kept turning its body toward the "threat". Very dangerous horse.
