Absolutely nailed it. As a young man who grew up and went through high school just before the advent of smart phones, Tik Tok, and a complete saturation of marketing with woke rhetoric I am so thankful that did not impact my formative years. Pat, this started a long, long time ago. My grandmother in 1995, when I was 8 talked about everything you covered in a different light. Of course we didn't have smart phones, but the foundation was laid already. The destruction of healthy values and self discipline had begun. What we are seeing now is the mental illness in youth in application. They have engineered a population easy to control, and less tolerant of discomfort.

Pat and I talked about this at a class a few years ago. I brought up the commercial that was running at the time where 2 teenage boys were stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and almost in tears because their mom's insurance didn't have roadside assistance and neither of them knew what a lug wrench was. We have multiple generations now that have been raised by "parents" that I wouldn't let watch my dog. Without exposure to better role models, these new generations will be our downfall. Men are free today to be weak, inept, and afraid in ways their ancestors were not.

The younger generations you're talking about are also the first to live in a worse off country and have less opportunity than their parents since the founding of the country! So where's YOUR responsibility in this? Why didn't you at least pass on what you were given? I'm so sick and tired of older generations saying millennials and younger are weak and lazy and so on when it's YOU'RE generations responsibility to raise these people. More destruction has happened under the control of the boomer generation than any other! Take some ownership in the fact that you most likely failed your children and left them worse off than you were by your parents!

I am a high school teacher in a major U.S. city. Students are on their phones, and misusing school issued computers all day in their classes. They are playing games, watching tv, videos, texting and scrolling through countless memes. All norms of behavior of decency and courtesy have broken down. Kids use extreme profanity in front of teachers knowing there are no consequences. Teachers, administrators and deans are hopelessly overwhelmed. Kids are complete indifferent and nihilistic about learning, playing sports or participating in any activities inside or outside of school. Parents no longer have any control over their kids, and in many cases fear them. Attendance is abhorrent and many students have 60 or more unexcused absences per year. Administrators and teachers are under severe pressure never to fail a students, risking their careers if they do so. It is now considered a violation of a students civil rights to suspend, or fail a student. Every year we graduate hundreds of students who can barely read or do arithmetic, and are completely lacking in foundational skills necessary to find and keep a job. This problem is going on through out schools across the country. It is a terrifying and staggering problem that in the long run I do not know if in the long run are country can sustain.

Coz I still actually ended up having a childhood, I loved playing in the garden, I loved building all kinds of stuff with my Lego out of my imagination since we couldn't afford the fancier toys all my friends had... I live at a fairly cheap apartment complex. We have lots of first generation kids whose parents are immigrants. Their parents are old school as I see the kids outside playing everyday after school. The other thing I've learned is that they have manners, are respectful, and I never see a phone in their hands. They also know about current issues today but their parents obviously disagree with the 'agenda' being pushed. So perhaps the hope lies there. You are so correct with boredom or having to sit still causing a kid to get creative in their minds instead of relying on an electronic device. It also teaches a bit of self-discipline also. Playing outside on a farm when I was a kid was a wonderful thing-transitioning to public school was an awful experience for me. If I hurt myself I learned to deal with it as my parents didn't coddle me but would simply say "It won't be the last time." It had to be arterial spray or a bone sticking out to be legitimately hurt lol.

I grew up in Delaware until age ten. Grew up watching Batman, Ultraman, sixties sitcom reruns, seventies era sitcom reruns, playing baseball, playing Army in the woods, riding my bike, shooting my BB gun....normal kid stuff. Moved to podunk central NC in 1980 at age eleven (my dad grew up here). From 1980 onwards, I grew up working my ass off on a defunct tobacco farm. Doing heavy manual labor like splitting firewood manually with a sledgehammer and steel wedge, "picking up sticks," growing all kinds of vegetables, watermelons and cantaloupes, growing "pansies" at a family greenhouse, digging ditches, mowing huge lawns using a push lawnmower, no air conditioning, no MTV. Basically living like a borderline white trash hill billy. Other half of my family was up in Connecticut living normal lives...civilized. Looking back on it Id take growing up in suburban Delaware watching Batman with my best friend over working my ass off in hot humid North Carolina anyday. What did I get out of it? Nothing but a lot of scar tissue.

Hey Mac, Do you remember the shorts about NASA on the TV? As a three-year-old, I thought there was nothing cooler than that annular stage couple dropping and spinning away as the rocket's second stage separated. And Underdog and Dick Dastardly and Muttley? Hehehehehehehe

I remember when JFK was killed in 1963. I was in my third-grade class when a kid from the fifth grade stuck his head in our classroom door and yelled "Hey, the president has been shot!". Like many adults in that era, my parents believed that Oswald was the lone assassin. They questioned nothing.

I think you should talk about people being responsible for all of this and how to deal with it on a nation wide scale.
