Adding Steve Berlin is the only change Los Lobos have made. I have one of The Latin Playboy albums on CD, and I love it. I like Los Lobos more, but it was interesting to hear Hidalgo & Perez doing a record with two guys who at the time I only knew as producers. I did learn that a lot of producers were musicians who found their niche in the control room. Jimmy Miller is one that I think of, but George Martin brought so much to the Beatles aide. The background music on A Hard Days Night, Help, and Yellow Submarine is a given, but the little things like telling Paul that the piccolo trumpet was the instrument he was asking about for Penny Lane. Juaquim Cooder, I didn't know about. Thank you for showing his album. Thank God for Joe Boyd promising to keep Nick Drake's albums in print. I knew nothing about him when those records came out. I remember seeing them in the record stores, but until started to try to collect Richard Thompson I never heard them. I have a few of Sandy Denny's non Fairport albums, but for some reason not this one. The remiinder was very helpful. Thanks for a great vide0.

Hey Mazzy - love that Joaquin Cooder clip - brilliant. Also nice to see you pushing Fotheringay, The Fairports and the like. I am a huge English folk, Fairport fan. Fotheringay actually did a second album, but it was never released - until relatively recently. Sandy Denny one of the great English folk voices - I cant think of anyone who had that delivery that she had. Such a tragedy. Trevor Lucas returned to Australia and produced numerous great Aussie bands before he to passed away. Cya Doug

Having listen d to Joachim’s instrument it reminds me a lot of the eponymous albums Congotronics (1&2). The rhythms and the distortion. If you haven’t heard the albums, they’re worth checking out.

Mazzy :-) Fotheringhay is a village in Northamptonshire not too far away from where I live. Mary, Queen of Scotland was imprisoned in the castle by Elizabeth I, tried and executed in the great hall. The castle was left to fall into disrepair and demolished in the 17th Century. I’m not sure about the link between Sandy Denny and Fotheringhay unless it the legends surrounding Mary and her tragic end. On the anniversary of her execution the female descendant of her personal maid who attended Mary on the day of her death still goes to the church there to pray for her Mistress’s soul all these hundreds of years later…..so you can see why Sandy might have chosen the name.

A voice as glorious as Sandy Denny's: 1960's Australian folk singer Tina Lawton who tragically died in a plane crash in Kenya while only in her early 20's. Will Ye Go, Lassie Go.

Mazzy, Always look forward to this series of your videos. To tie some of this up in a slightly thin way, in a Book on Los Lobos, David H and Cesar R talk about really being into Fairport and Richard Thompson when they were in high school. Agree 100% about the boys from East LA., never miss an opportunity to see them. Lastly, X has been going strong with the same four (yes Billie Zoom, left for a bit) for about the same amount of time. I never miss them either. Cheers

Mazzy, I know you look after your vinyl, but I wonder if any of the discs you talk about are noisy/sound scratchy, etc. How comfortable are with vinyl noises? It drives me a little crazy and I would like to know if I'm just too sensitive.

I don’t know whether you do this already but try giving your records a clean with record cleaner. It won’t get rid of all surface noise but it does help to reduce some of it. Hope this helps.

The Fotheringay album is absolute gem. Out of time and timeless. I was very late to the Sandy Denny party. I think I may have happened upon the Eclection album about a decade ago and it sent me on a journey. There's a nice box set called Nothing More - the Collected Forheringay, that provides a wonderful overview of the band with the two studio albums, demos, radio sessions and live material. I also read the Joe Boyd book you mention and a Sandy Denny biography. There was a lot to explore: solo albums, Fairport material, early material such as the Strawbs recordings, etc. It was a very rewarding time of collecting and sadly a premature ending. Cheers once again for a musical prompt. I have been revisiting some of these recordings this evening and reading through some accompanying and informative sleeve notes.

Hey Dave - nice to read your excellent comments. I am a huge Fairports, English folk fan. I have the Eclection CD, which is excellent. I saw Fairport Convention back in the UK a couple of times around 1969 / 70 before I emigrated out to Australia, I was unaware of the Sandy Denny biography - whats it called ? I have the Sandy Denny box set "Box Of Treasures" - brilliant. I was looking to try to get her box set "Studio Outtakes etc etc " but its incredibly expensive - I think its got 19 CD's - amazing. I also have her "Live at the BBC" box set. Trevor Lucas came back to Australia and produced a number of hits for some great Aussie bands before he to passed away. The whole Fairports story is such a tragedy isnt it - its so sad. Unhalfbricking started it all off for me way back in the 60's - rambled enough. Cheers Doug

Thank you for the kind words. The biography I was referring to is called I've Always Kept A Unicorn - the Biography Of Sandy Denny by Mick Houghton which was published by Faber & Faber in 2015. I did not get the 19 CD either, but covered most bases with a range of other CDs and sets. There is an element of tragedy surrounding the Fairports, as you say, but there is a lot of good music that remains and I think will always have a place. We are still talking about them and associated musicians and perhaps that is what is important.

Thanks for another great introduction to music I mostly wasn't familiar with though what intrigued me most was what received a passing mention here: The Kentucky Colonels. Would love to hear you talk about them again: perhaps you would consider doing a video on antecedents to The Byrds. I'm sure it would be another great one if you did.

Hey Mazzy great video. Los Lobos is one of the tightest bands live. Brilliant musicians. BTW, The band X out of LA are still the four original members touring and recording new music. They were formed in 1977. I have both Latin Playboys album and love them both. I probably own everything Los Lobos. Although X is my favorite band.

The instrument Joachim Cooder is playing is what they call in Africa a bush piano. It has been electrified of course and some changes have been made. But it remains essentially a bush piano.

I have an original Fotheringay. Its wonderful. Another wonderful obscure folk album, Cameo (1970) by Marian Henderson. Australian, her only solo album, it was released in the USA. Also, Fools Paradise (1975) by Madden and Harris, proggy Australian folk with an English aesthetic. Then there's the unique folk Hush (1971) by Extradition, like nothing you have heard - people have paid up to $4,000 Australian for the original vinyl. The reissue goes for hundreds. Australian music pre AC/DC still remains to be discovered by the UK and the USA, in the main.

That song you played by Joachim was actually a B side of one of the Spencer Davies Group’s singles in the mid 60’s. I think the A side was Keep On Running but I’m not 100% certain of that. I never realised it was one of Jesse Fuller’s songs and, if I recall correctly, it was titled The Railroad Song on that single.
