Do not use schuko (0:21). That does not connect the ground. If the device becomes faulty an the voltage escapes to the case and if you have another device that is actually grounded and touch both, then it is bye bye.

@@rin_ssp If there is no ground then you can use it without grounding. If there is ground then not grounding is dangerous. If the ungrounded equipment fails and you get a shock while also touching a grounded equipment next to it, it can be fatal. Schuko plug is specifically designed to fit older type ungrounded outlets. The opposite is not possible as you must ground if ground is available (does not apply to double insulated equipment).

There is an even greater hazard in forcing a Schuko into an Italian socket. Schukos are designed to fit into a physical 'cavity' before establishing electrical contact with the power line. This prevents people from accidentally touching the prongs while in tension, by, for example, sticking a finger between the plug and the wall. On the Italian plugs, this is achieved through plastic collects at the base of the prongs, so that only the tips are conductive. A Schuko in an Italian plug will have its conductors dangerously exposed, making it not impossible for tiny fingers to touch them while still connected.

@@rizzulazzi True, schuko pins are 4.8 mm. Euro and the Italian 10 A is 4.0 mm. Te bad contact then could cause fire if one takes the 10 A. The Euro plug is cleverly deigned, the pins are bent inwards to maximize contact on the "oversized" schuko socket. Still it is rated for at most 2.5 A. Without Italy and Switzerland one could have made the Euro plug also 4.8 mm and 16 A. The larger profile plug would have been unnecessary.

The Italian Dual socket can accomodate both 10A (small) and 16A (large) plugs. It is illegal to mount a metal plate with a dual socket for the reason you explain, but the plug's pins are partly insulated (if safety-approved types) and the risk is nonexistent (but cheap chinese devices or very old devices have non-insulated pins).

I like that the UK plug must be fused itself, but they are indeed to big and ugly. the Type F plug (germany) has 2 ground pins wich is in my opinion great as it ensures you have to be grounded with a cable that uses it. However i think it would be even better if they combine type E and F (wich are already interchangable plugs) to one sokket with 3 earth pins. and a fuse to be placed in from the top. to have the best from all types.

You can use schuko on ungrounded socket but not the other way around (as in a room where there are grounded equipment everything has to be either grounded or safety isolated). Ungrounded sockets were banned in 1997 on new installations but they will exist for long,

Well I understood that for safety reasons it was always a good design feature that the earth/ground connection was the first to be made and the last to break. With the Italian plugs it appears that all three are of equal length.Additionally, there appears to be little support for the plugtop and flexible cord. Atleast the Schuco socket gives support to the plug and ensures that the earth is the first to make last to break. The only problem I have with that system is that you are relying on a 16 Amp breaker some way off to protect the flexible cord and appliance, which for low power applications has dubious safety issues for over-current faults. Earth leakage we can take care of with Residual Current Devices, but don't become overdependent on them because they can fail too. Saludos desde el chico electricista.

That's OK for a small plug (lamps, hair driers, radios, phone chargers, etc) but not for the big grounded plug (Desktop computers, TV sets, drillers, studio lights, toasters, lamps with light regulator, etc) because if you connect it directly to the socket, it will not be grounded and you can blow your appliance or cause it to malfunction. That's why the adaptor has 3 pins. The middle pin is ground and with some things you need it.

@@somebodyrandom809 with europlugs in UK sockets, the problem is not earthing (an adaptor won't magically earth the appliance and if it has a europlug it doesn't need an earth anyway, though a big schuko one will, but it's pins are thicker so it won't fit into a UK socket I don't think) the real problem is the lack of a fuse and that you are shoving something into the socket that shouldn't go there, which risks damaging it

@DrSAM69

As an italian I agree that our outlets are much more vulnerable to level force but our socket blocks are also half as big as the 'shuko' or E/F ones, yet a type C plug would suffer the same weakness in a E/F outlet. This can be solved (and a few brands already did) by making an italian socket where the the plug sinks into the wall a bit like the E/F or the swiss ones. The E/F and the italian type L are the only reversible plugs around the world but type L is much more compact. BTW the E/F is already a hybrid of the german(F) and french(E) plugs and it's now basically the standard in almost all of europe.
