Did you know there was a magical place where you could go to and experience joy with the community of people as passionate about their hobbies, arts and interests as you; a place where you could show up as yourself and be accepted for it?
Hi everyone, and welcome to the newest episode of #itsjustfeminism where we highlight the contributions of feminists around the world!
In the last episode, Tammy gave us a feminist recommendation to visit a comic con, as it is a safe space where we can all enjoy and share our passions. So it only seems fitting that today, Kristina is presenting us her Indigenous Comic Con!
We talked about Kristina's love for comic books, her favorite super heroes, and the costumes she makes with her son for Halloween. We also discussed the importance of providing space for quality representation of Indigenous cultures, and how to avoid cultural appropriation when cosplaying Indigenous pop culture characters. She gave some great feminist recommendations for literature too, like ElfQuest and Scary Godmother.
Thank you Kristina for finding time for this conversation in the midst of preparations for the ComicCon and the PowWow Pitch - and good luck with both!
More about Kristina in her own words:
Kristina Maldonado Bad Hand is a Sicangu Lakota and Cherokee artist that hails from Taos, New Mexico. Her passion for community and social justice has led her to speak on matters of equality and cultural representation in pop culture. She is a graphic designer, illustrator, comic creator, and former co-chair of the Denver American Indian Commission. She has over 10 years of experience in after-school and summer programs. Most notably for her work with Pop Culture Classroom in their comic-based literacy curriculum; as a community and OBH liaison with the Jeffco Indian Education Program, and as a Think 360 Artist for her SEL lessons through design and pop culture. She founded Create áyA Makerspace with her husband Rafael Maldonado Bad Hand, and the director of ayA Con, Denver’s Indigenous Comic and Art Festival.
àyA CON is happening in Denver, US (October 4-6th 2024) and it's free to attend so if you're somewhere close stop by and explore the richness of multicultural approaches to fiction. You can expect to enjoy many different shows, participate in cosplay and ribbon skirt contests to win great prizes, and discover small talented vendors. The event is designed to be as accessible and safe for everybody as possible: from elevator access to quiet spaces and alternative activities in case of sensory sensitivities. It is also a dry event.
