J.K. Rowling recently promoted a thread in which an anti-trans bigot denied that trans people were victims of the Holocaust, in spite of various historians, organisations, courts, and even Germany's government acknowledging otherwise.

I don’t understand why she’s doing this at all. What does she think she’s going to gain by participating in this kind of revisionism? The only thing that you can get is upset fans and the approval of n4zis. Even if she holds these convictions, she must understand that this is a bad look for a children’s author. Caelan Conrad did an excellent job covering this too, going in to thoroughly debunk Joanne’s statements and to criticize Magnus Hirschfeld’s problematic beliefs.

Joanne Karen's dedication to destroying her own legacy is so bizarre indeed. I can get talentless hacks like MAP Walsh needing to harp on these topics in order to get fame and money, but Joanne Karen already had all of that thanks to the success of the Harry Potter franchise. a lot of holocaust denial is about downplaying the number of victims or the severity of the conditions in the camps, and so on, not just a blanket "didn't happen at all". What rowling did is absolutely holocaust denial. we don't really have a social framework for punishing celebrities, but it would be nice if being a public figure was something that could somehow be revoked.

With Rowling I expect nothing yet she still manages to disappoint. "Magnus was a gay Jewish man, under that logic would any of his views exclude gay and Jewish people as the victims?" The views themselves have no relevance, but according to deniers the event in general didn't happen, so the question might not work that well. 11:01 "(...) in my mind, she chose it [the name] in spite of the name's history and associations" Given Rowling's history, I'm starting to think she chose it precisely *because* of its implications.

Brain damage doesn't cause Holocaust denial. Hate causes Holocaust denial. Regardless of whether the beliefs are new or not, "… bounc[ing] her head off every step …" has absolutely nothing to do with it. Considering that disabled people were also victims of the Holocaust, implying that Holocaust denial is caused by brain damage is in rather poor taste, to put it mildly. I know this wasn't your intention. However, it is what your words logically imply. I know that we've spent our whole lives immersed in the idea that implying disability is a fun and funny way to knock someone down a peg or 2, but all it does is forward the idea that disability is the primary (perhaps only) cause of horrific ideas and bad behaviour. Please take a moment to consider whether this is something you want to contribute to.

I was never a Harry Potter fan, but I spent a good chunk of my elementary and middle school years wanting to be JK Rowling when I grew up. She just seemed so cool and the fact that her undying persistence is the whole reason for her success really inspired me. When she started speaking out against trans rights despite the unreasonable and terrifying Internet mob, she just became that much cooler in my sheltered fourteen-year-old mind. Learning what the trans movement actually was and the true extent of the crap Rowling pulled was a bittersweet experience.

@airplanes_aren.t_real Absolutely fair, and good on you for being brave enough to admit it. Misos comes from the Greek word for hatred. Think: Misogyny, Misanthropic, Misotheist, etc. They mean hatred for women, hatred for humanity, and hatred for god. Now, some people make the change for the reason Glaaki mentions, i.e. they're tired of bigots going 'I'm not afraid of gay/trans/Muslim people!', but that's actually a misconception of phobia. Phobia just means aversion, which yes, includes fear, but also disgust and hatred. The reason I made the switch is because it's ostracizing for people suffering genuine medical phobias to lump them in with bigots who have made an ideological choice to remain ignorant. Not everyone agrees, but it's a change I wanted to make for myself.

There's a much more sinister interpretation of the "Silkworm" quote given that JKR believes in the pseudoscience autogynophilia. Was the character threatening rape or implying that a trans woman would enjoy being assaulted post-op and is therefore missing out? I haven't read the book, but that kind of rhetoric is not uncommon for some of her associates.

It's a difficult topic, that of what consequences someone like Rowling should face, if any. I don't like cancel campaigns some people engage in, as I believe bigots should be faced by counterarguments instead, like you do in this video. With that said, it should go without saying that illegal acts (such as denying the Holocaust in Germany) should be punished according with the law. I also think everyone should be entitled to personally boycott anything they want for any reasons, and also raise awareness of issues such as Rowling's antitrans efforts and views. Whether other people agree, should be up to each individual. Although however good the intentions of people who want to cancel and ban people with troubling views are, where should we draw the line? Aside from criminal acts (such as Holocaust denial in Germany), would Rowling be okay if she didn't express her bigoted views and supported antitrans politicians; if she only thought those things? I fear that by going too hard on people like Rowling, we make the hateful and bigoted more careful and thus less visible. I would rather know where people stand instead of having them lurking in the shadows, silently influencing politics. Everyone has the right to vote, so we could get completely blindsided by a bunch of hateful people who don't publicly say anything of fear of getting canceled or banned, but who vote for dangerous politicians. Rowling's arch from antitrans to antisemitism isn't shocking, but of course disappointing. I think a lot of bigotry is rooted in antisemitism, that almost everything eventually leads back to that. I see it everywhere, in almost every conspiracy theory, in every anti-establishment sentiment, in every criticism of the democratic system, in media critism. It may start with criticising women, disabled people, LGTBQ+ people, rich people, poor people, immigration, corporations, the US, Israel, Muslims, the UN, whatever --- but it often ends up in anti-semitic tropes. It's so sad to see.
@ALeviCalledBird
6 ай бұрын
Minor correction: she's always been antisemitic. The goblins in HP have almost every antisemitic trope written into them (a race of short, hook-nosed, conniving creatures literally control the entire financial system, and that's only scratching the surface). She also must've given her consent for the story line of Hogwarts Legacy, which added blood libel to the lore (the goblins kidnapped wizard children to use their blood in a dark ritual, mirroring the ancient antisemitic belief that Jews would steal good Christian children and use their blood in evil rituals). Given that Harry Potter's antagonist is basically Wizard Hitler, and that Fantastic Beasts' plot features World War II, I find it particularly difficult to believe that these were mistakes. This wasn't an uninformed writer picking up antisemitism from the surrounding culture, but a writer who has a particular interest in World War II writing an entire race as a carbon copy of the Happy Merchant. So, if anything, she went from antisemitic to anti-trans. Though, personally, I think she was fundamentally opposed to basically all minority groups from the very beginning.

It's a difficult subject, because letting them say whatever horrible things they like and hide behind it saying "It's just free speech" or "It's just my opinion" or "I'm just asking questions" has always been part of the strategy. They move the overton window to the point where saying these things, which in the past may have been unthinkable, become normalized. he Nazis did it with Jewish people, and they'll do it again if we give them the chance. Her words actively put lives in danger--the UK is hostile enough towards trans people without her using her fame to make things worse. Deplatforming does work. Chasing Nazi marches out of your neighborhood does work. They don't go underground, grow in secret, and take you by surprise. They thrive on publicity and spreading their rhetoric--which is why I'm not sure publicly debating them is ever a good idea (their arguments don't need to make sense for them to gain allies, but ours do and are held to a much higher standard). That said, I don't think cancel culture (the way the right wing uses the term) even exists, really. You can't cancel the rich and powerful. Meanwhile, marginalized people are deplatformed and silenced all the time. So in the end, I guess it ends up like you say: they get to expose themselves and we get to call them out and educate people. But gods is it exhausting.
