A friend of mine knew Jack very well from his youth. They both were good guitar players and played together in a band in the my friend's garage. Lots of very good musicians played in that garage band. There were tapes, but there is no telling what happened to them. I was going to college and spent a lot of time there Many years later my friend came to visit and brought Jack Sherman with him to show him the guitar he made for me. Jack was more interested in my Yamaha and sat there playing it for a couple of hours. It had a really good tone. Jack is a genuinely nice guy and never deserved the shit that the Red Hot Chili Peppers threw his way. I never heard Jack say a single derogatory thing about them, though. As a matter of fact, they never came up in the conversation. He was too absorbed in my Yamaha. Jack told me about the first time he heard funk being played at a party. He was the only white guy at the party. It changed his life. After the Red Hot Chili Peppers Jack played with George Clinton and later Tonio K. He has toured with Bob Dylan and did studio work with Peter Case. Jack Sherman is well respected in the music industry and as he shows in this video, he is a good guitar player. More about my Yamaha. Several years ago a neighbor heard me playing my guitar and asked me if he could play it. He was such a good guitar player that I could not play that guitar after him. His name was Dale Williams and had played bass for Sun Ra in Chicago. He had also played for Little Milton and a host of other big name musicians. Dale also loved the tone of the Yamaha, which cost me all of $160.00. Two great guitarists who both loved the tone of that guitar. When I originally bought that guitar I was riding my bicycle and was about ten miles from home. I had stopped by the store and just wanted to look at the guitars, but once I heard its tone, I had to buy it that day. I picked up and tried all of the other Yamaha CG-100A guitars in that shop, but the one I wanted just stood head and shoulders above the rest of the same model. I cannot tell you why my guitar sounded so much better than all the rest of the same model, but I knew I had to buy that guitar that day. I rode home 10 miles on my bike with that guitar on my back. It has always been special and the proof was the attention it received from Jack Sherman and Dale Williams, who did not know each other and were both captivated by the sounds it made in different years. This is Dale: Williams: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o4dt3JaNfJhzqJw

Very technically talented indeed. John was probably as good technically or maybe even better when a big influence of his was Steve Vai and Frank Zappa. 88 and 89 especially, but as far as every other era of the chili peppers i don't think any chili pepper guitarist has been more technical.

Dave Navarro is probably more and John was a shred virtuoso in 88 and 89. John was probably a virtuoso like that until he started drugs and left the chili peppers but he really only showed off the shredding during his first two/three years as a chili pepper. You are bound to be a technically good when you spend as much time as he did studying Steve Vai and Frank Zappa.
