I know Jacob and Julia probably won’t see this, but the more body fat a person had, usually the more easily they’ll float. That’s what Georgius was saying. Also about the Bible and homosexuality, I did some light digging and found that Julia is pretty much right. The modern understanding of “sin to be gay” came around 1946. HOWEVER, the Bible does have evidence for speaking ill of men having sex with men prior to that, but the understanding is more like… selling sex and acts of violence. Not that it should even matter… why do we insist on letting a “2000 year old” book dictate our conversations…. Sigh

the thing i'm curious about is if, according this god, suicide isn't a sin, then why did al turn to gold? is it because of reasons? it's still strange, though… al committed suicide in order to avoid an endless fate of trying to fix the past. but ulpius technically committed suicide to get out of debt. back then, wouldn't ulpius's reasons be seen as far more "sinful"? though maybe al's suicide didn't turn him to gold. maybe he committed suicide in the past and then somebody committed a sin? but do dead bodies turn to gold as well?

As a Christian who has spent a lot of time researching cultural context, original translations, etc - THANK YOU for pointing out that “being gay” wasn’t declared a sin in the Bible until the 40s or 50s(?). The actual Bible - God’s true Word - says NOTHING about homosexuality. The Almighty doesn’t care who you’re with as long as you’re both adults and love each other; He has way more to worry about lol.
@NerdOutStuff123
3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this isn't correct. Since at least the 13th century, homosexuality has been considered a sin in the church. The late Roman empire (300-500 CE in the west) also had an unfavorable view of homosexuality that heavily influenced the pervasive homophobia in Christianity today, as around that time the empire was converting to Christianity under Constantine. By the high Middle Ages (~1000-1300), consistent repression and punishment of homosexuality was enforced. Here is a direct quote from the King James Bible published in 1611: "Thou shalt not lie with mankinde, as with womankinde: it is abomination." It's important to note that King James had multiple male lovers. There is a theory that this was published as a way for the church to thumb their nose at the king but I haven't been able to find a reliable source that substantiates this. It would also be ridiculous to say that it wasn't until the mid-20th century (40s-50s) that homosexuality was labeled as a sin in the bible when there is textual proof from at least the 18th century of the bible being used to justify homophobic legislation. I'm not saying this to be a downer, I just think it's important that we as modern people don't paint the past as more progressive than it was in areas where it absolutely wasn't, as it inadvertently erases the victims of bigotry while trying to express support. Sources: www.jstor.org/stable/2779118 rictornorton.co.uk/eighteen/1776burr.htm Also the trial of Oscar Wilde. (there are more but these are the first 3 off the top of my head)
@spearbun

@@NerdOutStuff123 Fortunately, it IS correct. Although many church officials deemed homosexuality a sin, “homosexuality” itself was not in the Bible until a group of translators in the 50s(?) Chose to translate “arsenokoitai” as “homosexual,” which refers to the young boys involved in Grecian pederasty. It’s also worth mentioning that ever since church officials have tried to say that God says homosexuality is a sin, there has been pushback from others. Additionally, prior to it being interpreted as homosexuality, it was originally interpreted as meaning masturbation, or any immoral sex act (as that with animals, for example). But in general, the Bible itself never said that until more modern times; and scholars have been pushing back against prominent evangelicals for centuries about it. But thanks for your input! I think you misunderstood God’s Word as equating to the church, which it doesn’t. Because most of the time, the church is wrong.
@NerdOutStuff123
3 жыл бұрын
@@spearbun I feel like this is an argument of semantics. The word "homosexual" wasn't used before the 50s because the word wasn't coined until the late 19th century. Before then, the practice of what we as modern people would consider homosexuality was condemned. This a 'six of one, half a dozen of the other' situation. It's important to note that our contemporary perception/definitions of queerness are not universal through out time. Gayness until very recently was seen as something one Did, not something one Was. That is why previous translations of the bible did not use identity terms but named acts ("lying with" etc.). Masturbation was seen as the gateway homosexuality. Also, pederasty and homosexuality have been used synonymously for centuries by homophobes. They still Are in some places! It is not a mistake that when one of these terms is used for the other, it's on purpose. Of course there was push back every time, that's absolutely true! There have been gay rights groups for centuries. But that says more about the resilience of gay people than it does about the governing bodies or the church as an institution. I'm not trying to pick a fight. I, as a lesbian, would love if this were true. But it's not. The usage of the specific word "homosexual" in that verse is simply a modernization of what it had been for previous 500 years. That doesn't mean that that was the implication in the original Hebrew/Aramaic but in anglophonic culture, this is the case. I make no claims to god's word or intentions. I reference the church because that is a traceable historical record that has been an influence in European culture for over a millennia which then informed American social attitudes. I mean no harm/offense, I just think this statement needs more nuance or else it risks spreading an ahistorical narrative. Have a great rest of your day!
@spearbun
3 жыл бұрын
@@NerdOutStuff123 I wouldn’t consider it much of an argument, really, since your response was unrelated to my initial comment. I’d highly recommend you look up the Reformation Project, an LGBT-lead Christian group with important LGBT Christian history. This stuff isn’t “semantics,” it’s very important, because we are able to separate what the Bible *actually says* vs. what some dudes decided it said; which has lead to far too much misunderstanding and hatred. It’s the ability to separate the actual religion from what we’ve been *told* it is. But, yeah - it’s not an argument. I agree with what you’re saying. Historically men in charge of the church have said same-sex relations are “unnatural” (that has been the primary argument for a very long time). However, what I said was in relation to the Bible; not the church. It’s very important to separate those things, otherwise facts become very muddled and turn to untruths. The truth of the matter is that prior to the 40s/50s, “homosexuality” was not the translation. It was “immoral sex acts,” “prostitution,” or alluded to masturbation or b**st*lity. That’s why it can’t be semantics. I’m not nit-picking what you’re saying, because we’re saying completely different things.
@NerdOutStuff123
3 жыл бұрын
@@spearbun When I said semantics, I meant it in the literal sense. Our discussion so far seems to be about linguistics and word usage and the intent behind those words. We currently having a disagreement about whether or not the bible condemned homosexuality before 1946. I say that because it condemned homosexual acts or acts that were seen as synonymous with homosexuality that it did. You, at least as I understand it, feel that what it condemns is vague enough that it isn't referring to homosexuality and it wasn't until 1946 that it explicitly categorized being gay as a sin. I apologize if this is not what you mean, this is just my interpretation based on what you have said. I Was responding to your initial comment, directly in fact. You said "THANK YOU for pointing out that “being gay” wasn’t declared a sin in the Bible until the 40s or 50s(?)". I quoted the 1611 translation of the bible that contradicted that statement. We can argue until the cows come home about what the "real" bible says, but that doesn't disprove what I said. Did Jesus heal a Roman soldier's male lover? Possibly, depending on your interpretation of the text. Was Jonathan in love with David? This has been an argument made by Jewish and Christian scholars for a long time. Can any of us say with absolute certainty what god's intent was behind anything he told the prophets who wrote the various books of the bible? No. We're all playing a very extended game of telephone with a religious text that none of us have seen and few of us could actually read any way. I am only recounting what that game of telephone has said, not what original statement was. I'm aware of the Reformation Project. I think they do very important work in rectifying the sins of the church in regards to it's treatment of LGBT+ people.
