Please consider including the Q&A in future talks. It is pretty often that the Q&A at the end of a talk has some of the best info in the entire video.

For me it's the little things that make this hobby fun, which is why I love Jake's RB vlog about ... water storage. And much like that vlog a talk about cleaning really helps make this hobby fun. Much like he said, you clean the glass to better see all the pretty stuff inside, but keeping up with all the little things and you have less problems which make all the pretty stuff not so pretty. So this was a great talk, just talking about cleaning the venturi I remember with my old skimmer I would need to put a drill bit through there it gets so caked up, nice to know just throw a cup of RO water in the microwave and squirt it down the hose every couple weeks and then I won't need to be so aggressive with a drill bit. Plus Jake really is about the talk, 1/3 of the talk isn't an introduction about himself.

The search for the best, cost effective, least expensive easiest to learn and maintain reef aquarium from Pico, Nano, standard tanks and large megatanks. This would make at least a months worth of serious studies and evaluations, may be even a years worth. It would really be good for the hobby to show that can be done.

Great advice Jake. The basic stuff gets overlooked. Awesome information.

Sulfuric acid to clean a return pump. Sounds interesting as the citric acid or vinegar works if I leave it overnight like for wetside vortechs, but I would prefer something that could clean a return pump in an hour. Always white chunks down in the bottom back by berrings difficult to get it all out.

My venturi definitely doesn't need cleaned every 2 weeks. After a few months, it'll get a small amount of buildup, but definitely not 2 weeks.

It depends on your system. Some tanks are dirtier than others. I'm not a heavy feeder, but some people are pretty heavy handed.

@@scottcurtiss9385 I think it's more salt/calcium buildup then sludge, at least in my experience.

@@jasepoag8930 In that case your right. I had a friend that had a pretty filthy sump and he got sludge into into everything

Very important but too often overlooked part of keeping a successful tank. Now I tend to gravitate towards optimizing for easy of clean. Buy gear that are easy to take apart, skip on gear if I can, plumb the sump in a way that it's easy to take gear out, especially the return pump.

Just bought a used tank that was sitting unmaintained for months. I'm getting familiar with taking apart the skimmer and the gyre pumps and having to clean them before even getting started. I'm unlikely to let the maintenance go on them now that I know how to clean everything. :)

Well I must have a really good skimmer because my Venturi port has been once in 8 years and that was a little tiny granules love live rock got stuck in the port. I do periodically check it because of that incident it's always clean as a whistle. And I think everybody over complicates the cleaning process all I do anymore is I keep a Rubbermaid tub full of vinegar and every 3 to 6 months I just dropped my pumps in it for a few hours and let it run for a few hours works great. Sometimes the maxspect gyre needed more often every two to three months

Definitely clean your pumps. I cleaned one of mine a few months ago and noticed that the ceramic shaft on my needle wheel had a tear in it and was exposing the metal rod underneath. Not good that it was leaching metals into my tank. If I didn’t clean my pumps every few weeks it could’ve potentially destroyed my livestock.

Always cleaning everything in my tank. To me, if you can't do regular maintenance on your equipment, you probably should find another hobby because keeping reef tanks beautiful and healthy starts with the maintenance of the equipment.

Good talk, important but not groundbreaking. Really it should start with cleaning your back and side panels so your view is drawn to your livestock not a mess and then progresses to powerheads in the tank to whatever you have going on outside of the display.

All these blanket statment were funny. "This pump may not start if power interrupt but it deserve live time award", a "cheap chinese skimmer that is REALLY REALLY tuned will out perfume high end skimmer"... yes cleaning is important but quality if product is equally important... a bad design that require regular cleaning is a bad design..a good design can also save you in frequent cleaning!
