1:25 "That's no problem." Always liked his cold demeanor. Scaramanga was a memorable villain, no doubt thanks to the brilliant Christopher Lee (R.I.P.) who gave him a personality. According to Lee himself Scaramanga was just a "thug" in Ian Fleming's novel and he was grateful the producers reworked the character and allowed him to make his own interpretation of him. Lee was a cousin of Ian Fleming's too. It's not hard to see how Christopher Lee made such an impression on everybody who saw him in any role. He was always professional regardless of the role he was given and the films he appeared in. That's how he will be remembered.

@ Wez Marauder. You are right. One of the absurdities in the Bond film ''TMWTGG'' is why would the character Francisco Scaramanga who is a professional hitman want or have any need for an industrial laser powered by a Solex agitator? And why in the film did Scaramanga bump off the character Hai Fat to come into ownership of Hai Fat's business and island? It is also absurd that Scaramanga would come into possession of Hai Fat's island and business after Scaramanga bumped off Hai Fat with no attempt by Hai Fat's employees to stop Scaramanga from taking over Hai Fat's business and island.

Lee reaches for a part of the gun even before he argues with Hai Fat. He was likely going to kill him in any case.
@wezmarauder2754
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's clear to him Hai Fat either underestimated Bond or simply is incapable of dealing with Bond himself. Therefore he has become a liability to Scaramanga. Whether he was going to try and (fail to) kill Bond again or lie low in order not to jeopardize his future investment was irrelevant to Scaramanga hence he was going to kill him in any case like you say. Either way Scaramanga correctly assessed that Hai Fat might have been a powerful crime syndicate boss in the past but he has lost the plot in his old days. He understands that Hai Fat's expiration date is long overdue and he therefore "retires" him knowing what little loyalty he had to him and his organization was misplaced and of no importance anymore. Hai Fat naturally is no fool either and now understands he misjudged Scaramanga thinking he hired a mere hitman who willingly would work for a contract without questioning him. His personality and personal ambitions has attracted too much attention to Hai Fat's organzation. "I now regret having even *considered* your services." Scaramanga is too volatile and at this point so he'd best get out of the way and "stay at the plant". Hai Fat's final mistake was thinking that him being the boss of a huge crime syndicate would make him untouchable for a mere hitman like he think Scaramanga is. It doesn't dawn on him until the very moment Scaramanga points his golden gun straight at him. We as the audience see Scaramanga playing along to Hai Fat's orders knowing he is assembling his golden gun. As such it's obvious Hai Fat's perception outside his own biased reality and him still bossing Scaramanga around at this stage conveys the message that he's "past it" and is a goner. An effective little scene that is underrated and overlooked in the James Bond films.

The story that became "DR. NO" was originally written as a screenplay for a TV pilot. Ian Fleming specifically created the villain as a role for his cousin, Christopher Lee. When the project fell through, Fleming turned the story into his next novel. Later, when legal problems tied up "THUNDERBALL" (also created for a film project that fell through), "DR. NO" was substituted as the first Eon film, probably because it, too, had started life as a film script. It's unfortunate that Lee was not hired at that point to play Dr. No. I've read that by that time, his salary was more than Eon wanted to pay! They were always cutting corners where they could... ask Sean Connery. While Lee did not play the German-Asian "Dr. No", he did play Asian villains in both "THE TERROR OF THE TONGS" from Hammer, and 5 "FU MANCHU" films from Harry Alan Towers. "GOLDEN GUN" is (along with "DIAMONDS" and "MOONRAKER") my 3 LEAST-favorite "007" films. Lee may be the best thing in it, though as a fan of the novel, the character of Francisco Scaramanga is NOTHING whatsoever like the villain in the book! I've long thought the perfect actor to play that role, had they done the book "right", would have been Fernando Lamas.

The dying cough at the end was ironic, given that he was effectively shot with a cigarette lighter! 🤔🏆

What a man! Such class and elegance! It's hard to find people like him nowadays, it seems to me that new generations have become very vulgar.

In the original book, he's actually a swaggering egotist with a heavy build, a crude way of speaking and a yen for -- well, for guns. ...that having been said, it's not as if the man in the film-version is what you'd call a better person underneath.

@@andrewmihovich4252 no.... Scaramanga from the book was tall- thin and very Latino. He was an unrefined thug, yes; but he worked well as a foil for Fleming's Bond, with his love of savage violence (kneecapping 098, for example).

@@Thicc_Cheese_Dip Not disagreeing with any of the second part. ...Was thinking of, _The description in Records was exact, but it had not caught the catlike menace of the big man, the extreme breadth of the shoulders, and the narrow waist, or the cold immobility of the eyes..._

What's so underrated about this scene is how he's holding the gun but he's leaning in the chair to angle himself to shoot him in the heart... small yet profond detail.

I love how Sir Christopher Lee made Scaramanga an equivalent of 007 on this movie instead of being the thug that was in the book itself. Sir Christopher definitely gave Scaramanga a whole new layer of class and sophistication.

i just love the concept of his gun, completely hidden, you check him and see what? a cigarette casing, lighter and a pen? why you're not gonna bother taking that away, it cant do no harm right? perfect assassination weapon imo

It was hand-crafted by expert gunsmith and same applies to ammunition. It is efficient assassin's weapon, but very indiscreet as bullets lead to his trail. It would also have very loud noise as 4,5mm golden mullet would have to go very very fast to be as lethal as Scaramanga is. He is expert marksman, but if bullet he shot can't pierce skin it won't help.

There's a tale there were between two and three "golden guns"...an assembled one, the three pieces and the one that's being put together. Lee had such a difficult time assembling it, another actor's hands had to be seen putting it together so Lee could only handle the final "gun".

I totally dissagre. I don`t undestand how you can consider it one of the worst in the series. It was a refreshing change with a great plot. It was Bond vs an assasin who` main goal was to challenge Bond cause he saw him as a equal gunman. Some cheesy Moore moment, yes, but not overdone and to silly. One of my favorites in the series actually, definetly one of Moores best. Well, that`s my opinion about it.

EVERY time I start building my golden gun...you know the other guy always starts to get a bit apprehensive & I have to stall him by talking about how It's hell getting it through customs but hey...don't ya just love this golden cufflink/pen etc. Sorry...no offence meant...You genuinely gave me a big laugh 😃 Thanks so much Jordy.
