I picked up this hitchhiker in Idaho, I took him to the gas station and drove him back to his camp. The guy kept saying he plays music and gave me some CDs. That hitchhiker was James McMurtry. I am a metalhead until I listened to his stuff! Brilliant.......

One of the best songs ever written. Thank you James McMurtry. Its says a lot about the sad state of music that you aren't a star like Johnny Cash. You should be. I never cry, but this song always manages to make me do so, can't even help it. Even now after many listens. As I've said before if you ever come to the central coast of California I'll definitely be buying a ticket. Please never stop making music. Beyond that you make real music. The kind that can be recreated live, without electronics...just you a mic and a guitar. Beautiful. Hard thing to find these days. Even more valuable than ever and not enough people seem to appreciate it.

I’m glad he’s not a big time star because the music would probably change. I love just about every song he has. I love to hear pure talent without the big studio effect. James, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Chris knight.. I’m sure there’s more but not enough guys like these.

Interesting, never thought of it that way. To me it was always been a love song. Not a love song in the popular sense, but a real song about love. About time, about longing, and waiting. About the pain you feel when it's gone.

This is an epic novel condensed into a song. Compromises not a thing. Plot twist, emotions conveyed perfectly. Character building and familiarization right there for us to pick up on. The man does all that in 5 minutes and 3 chords on a 12 string. Most take a year and 300 pages and a publisher

He's a musical genius I've listened to all of his albums today on a long journey to and from work - frankly I haven't had 'candy land' off my CD player and my iPod for the last 2 yrs His songs are full of emotion, truth and a very lyrical, beautifully sparse and yet somehow richly detailed tapestry. Last album was full of highlights too ... Can't wait for his new one in 2015. This is a classic and so much quality in every phrase and guitar pick - brilliant

Dylan is a poet (don't hold against it me that I made that trite an observation) but in this song, McMurtry might have wrote the only novel outline-song that I know of. It's pretty dense in detail but not enough to make it not to make it an insufferably long song. Just enough to make it you want to say, "Dude, you could make another 200 pages sing. But while we're waiting on that, play it again."

I'd say that Dylan is a better writer, and he's still a live. But I rate McMurtry just below Dylan...I talked to James about it after a show one time. He says that rating him that highly is ridiculous.
