I really want to visit Japan but I love food and I have a lot of dietary restrictions and feel intimidated about traveling but this has inspired me.

Thank you for this video! I didn't have allergy my first two times in Japan. Now I am going again and it is definetely a different experience than just being able to eat everything for fun. Videos like this are very helpful!

I am coming to Tokyo at the end of June. Do you have an updated list of Celiac-friendly / Gluten Free restaurants? It seems so many great places closed during the pandemic. Thank you so much! I want to take my friends out to eat and drink in Shinjuku but I am struggling to find GF places. We will be staying for 5 days. Thank you!! I last visited Tokyo in 2018 and am so happy to return. Thanks!

Hello! I’m sorry you’re having a tough time! I can totally relate with the initial frustration but it gets much easier once you figure out what works for you! As for me, I am quite sensitive so I commit myself to preparing most of my meals. It is time consuming and some days I don’t feel like cooking but luckily I do enjoy it most of the time. If I do eat out it’s usually to socialize and I stick to simple dishes and sake! Lots of sake 😅

How sure are you about the salt grilled mackerel? It says kelp brine on the ingredients, could there be gluten in that?

@@shaunlahert5763 As far as I know kelp brine does not contain gluten!

Thanks for making this!! I want to move to Japan when I’m older, but I recently got diagnosed with coeliac disease and was worried it would be really difficult to live in Japan because of it.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It’s tough at first but you’ll get the hang of it. As for moving to Japan, I would recommend learning to cook for yourself if you haven’t already. If you do go out, remember that many Japanese people will think that gluten is limited to ‘wheat flour’ rather than soy sauce, barley, etc… so you have to be careful!

@@PICKUPTHEPACE2020 thank you so much for the tips!! Something I’m curious about is, is it easier to say you’re allergic to gluten rather than say you have coeliac? I assume since it’s not very common over there that many people don’t know what it is and I would probably have to explain it to them haha
@kaikai7784

@@Romaritimes it’ll be easier to say you’re allergic, there’s also a card online you can print out so you can show them everything you can’t have just in case they don’t understand. Also surprisingly there are a lot of gluten free bakery’s in Tokyo( a fresh loaf is only about 3 dollars, a far cry to the 9 dollars I spend in America on a smaller, more processed loaf) also rice buns are getting more popular so don’t shy getting a burger now and then!

this is so helpful!! i'm making the big move over in March/April 23 and also have celiac disease, i am already stressing about food! so these videos are so helpful and give me a lot of hope that i won't go hungry

That’s exciting! It is definitely stressful at the beginning but you don’t need to worry about going hungry. I would advise learning the characters for wheat rye and barely so you can always double check ingredient lists before purchasing foods. If you have any questions feel free to ask!

Depending where you go, most hospitality staff will be able to serve you in English. Learn the basics like “arigato gozaimasu” (thank you) and “sumimasen” (excuse me) Thankfully most locals will be patient with you so, when in doubt, resort to your cell phone to help you communicate. Enjoy your trip!

What scares me the most about store bought products are cross contamination. Every single product even if is naturally gluten free could be cross contaminated because in the fabrics they treat both gluten free and gluten products. For example, corn, rice, oats are gluten free but in my country when they turn it to dust, how to say it? The dought? They do it in the same machine they work with weath and other gluten products and there, doesn’t matter if you are supposed to be eating rice dought is still contaminated. 😢
